Thanks Chuck. I've subscribed. It's a very helpful video and makes the job a little less daunting for me. I'll be watching it a few more times before I bite the bullet. Glad your out on the water now, regards, Dave. DE 38 Ketch Tondelayo. PS I'll try to make a video too when I do mine to help out our DE community.

Thanks so much! This was quite a long time ago. We have since made a channel for our lifestyle.
Faith’s Wind is the Channel name.

Thanks, Chuck. This was really helpful. Need to do mine for safety reasons soon. Just curious about the holes. Were they to strengthen it?

Yeah, this was definitely one of our most involved projects lol. Not sure what holes your referring to. The slots are simply for wash over from waves. The holes I drilled through it are indeed for further support. They have 1/2 inch stainless rod and nuts in them. It has been on the bow for 5 years now and the rear port side corner broke off. Because I have those through bolts the stability isn’t lacking and I can just cut it out and add a new piece.

Any chance you can share you plans and wood selection? I have the same boat and same problem .

Frank Lucato unfortunately I didn’t create any plans. I tend to adjust as I go from drawing it out in my head. Lol. As for the wood, I used Douglas Fir. I was unable to obtain Spruce at the time. Really wish I could have waited for Spruce. So glad to meet a fellow DownEaster owner! We still live aboard and will be taking her out for some MUCH needed TLC below the waterline in the spring. So far, this is holding up but to be honest, I’m probably going to remove it and put in a stainless sprit with a teak pulpit. The upkeep on the Fir is becoming too much lol. But, then again, I really can be a bit lazy at times. Haha. Fair winds sir!
