  • Farmers in Karamoja sub region wants government to avail them with irrigation schemes as it will help to reduce the effects of drought.
    UBC TV visited some of the farmers in the green belts of napak
    District like Iriri,Nabwal and Apeitolim sub counties.Farmers grow crops like sorghum ,maize ,cassava ,ground nuts and beans on a large scale, they say they cannot satisfy the market.

    The reason why karamoja will never recover from famine is because environment remodelling is not prioritised over short term agriculture. There is need to plant drought resistant trees on a large scale intercropping with the seasonal crops. there is need to have perennial crops to sustain the population even in times of drought. Maize, sorgum are good for food but not for the environment yet it is the environment which will determine survival of the population.The drive to make communities self reliant in food supplies without appropriate environment modelling will keep the area in recurrent famine cycles
