I just can't keep still watching this. Johnny is one of those guys whose groove is so deep you fel kinda glad there are no other musicians with him here.
I love the way he counts it off at 4:09: "Chop, chop, a dak-dak-dak..." We lived in New Orleans when I was a kid and I heard the street beats during Carnival season. Johnny's got the feel and it's great to hear him play this stuff.
I don't play drums, and I have no clue how anybody could even keep all that stuff going on. But I so glad somebody got this all on video, because it is epic, religion. John V. is the bomb, and I learn so much and have so much fun listening to him play!
Amazing that this video has over 65K views and only 554 likes. People are missing a lot from this man and what he has to offer in this clip and everything he's done. The flashy guys and videos are what most people flock to.
Thanks for checking out my video! I have more coming soon… subscribe to my new Channel GoLive NOLA , there’s a few recent live stream performances from Johnny
Thanks for the video....whe should stop thinking about syncopation as if it were some kind of weird exception....is just using all the time notes. What is not natural is to stick to 2 and 4...boring! SYNCOPATION don't exist really, we should call rock beats...LIMITATION.
I am lucky enough to have seen Johnny play probably at least 100 times.
And he still amazes me every single time.

I has the good fortune to watch a clinic at the Chicago Jazz Festival. That was the day I truly understood what drumming is all about.
FANTASTIC! What a musician - touches my soul!!!! And I'm a guitarist, so I don't really have a soul :-) Great stuff, keep it coming John! Thanks.
He is the legend and I'm so glad I had a piece of him in person back in N.O.

Yeah man, you're correct but I'll take this greasy J.V. groove stuff over the flask any day. This is the real deal, a lot of folks just don't know it.

great drumming. John feels New Orleans and southern drummers are funkier, but some pretty funky cats came out of Philadelphia and New York.
