Have both (an all original 1976 blue Pogue and a 2001 3594.50 Speedie reedition). They're really quite different beasts in style and wear. Speedie is more of a classic and timeless (if I may) status piece, whereas the Pogue has a colourful badass 1970s vibe to it which makes it an endearing vintage piece. Each watch corresponds to a different mood and style: casual chic + convertible car with the Omega, groovy t-shirt and motorbike with the 6139.
I have a Seiko Speed Timer Blue dial that I received as a high school graduation gift in 1977. I wore this watch almost daily for about 35 years. I've had periodic cleaning over the years and have had to replace the original crystal. I put it away when I got into the smart watch craze with a couple of generations of the Garmin Fenix. I am back to the Seiko now and it's in the rotation with my Seamaster and Submariner.
Yes... but Id like to know why Edoardo F thinks there is no comparison... Just because its Omega, a very expensive swiss brand ? Even 007 had a Seiko... if I may...
My dad recently gave me his blue Sieko 6139. He wore for 3 years flying combat missions in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Not only has that watch been to the moon, it has great personal significance to me. I give the nod to the Sieko. According to Dad, the single pilots bought the higher end watches while the married guys bought the Seikos. Also, pilots are known to have big watches and little, well, other stuff.
It is at the watchsmith now getting a complete going over. It will be in about 90 percent condition when finished and i will have it until i pass it to my son.
I have both (kinda). I have the CK2998 Speedy and several 6139s. They are both amazing watches. The Speedy has its extensive NASA history and famous Lemania based caliber which is “simple” in design but exceptionally rugged. The 6139 did beat both the El Primero and the Chrono 11 group (Heuer, Hamilton/Buren, etc.) into production with a column wheel and vertical clutch automatic that worked perfectly on Col. Pogue’s wrist for his 84 day mission on Skylab. I’m blessed but I suggest that a space Chrono geek needs both! Well done again T3.
Wearing my Speedy MK2 right now, love it. I don’t have a 6139, but my 6138 brown bullhead has been in the shop for six months trying to sort the sweep seconds hand. Fifteen seikos and this is the only one that’s ever given me trouble.
Own a Omega Speedmaster Pro. Wear mine on a black oem Nato. My weekend warrior watch. Especially when going for long drives. Perfect. So iconic. So classic.
@TheTimeTeller Omega Speedmaster was the standard issued watch of Indonesian Air Force Flying School during the 1980s decade. My uncle, a 2-Star Indonesian Air Force retiree, received his Omega in 1984 when he started the Flight School. I used to admired by his Omega watch, by then I thought it was a pilot watch.
I have a 04/1970 black with yellow hands JDM Speedtimer with original bracelet. Love it yet rarely get wrist time as it's pristine, no scratches on the notched case but the crystal is scratched.
I own a Speedmaster and it is timeless, specially the design of the watch. As for Speedtimer, it certainly looks like a vintage watch, probably due to case & crown design. thanks for the review Jory.
I’m going to Nosara Costa Rica on Saturday , movement workshop with Scott Davis , who trained Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds.....would be great if you and Connie came along , wishful thinking, good week to you ......and yrrr editor
Yes, you are wrong! But you are also right. I have no attachment to either watches so I can understand the preference for the Speedmaster because of its specs and I do love a good manual wind watch.
As owner of both I am often to be found beating myself black and blue trying to decide which to wear. Normally the speedie since my rapidly closing eye makes reading the time quite tricky.
You should know where I stand on this, that's the very Speed-Timer I owned. Love that watch. Would have kept it had I lessened my concerns about certain attributes when owning vintage Seikos, a topic for another day. I would say if love classic chronographs, you should try and own both. They are both deserving in a watch collection if chronographs are one of your main things. As such, I chose the Speed-Timer because it's just a more obscure vintage chronograph. Far fewer examples in the wild than Speedmasters, which is a bonus for me not to see essentially the same Speedmaster which the greater majority of Speedmaster owners gravitates towards. That being said, it's not that I would never own a Speedmaster, quite the contrary. I would just pick a version that isn't such a common checklist version... and, with so many special and limited editions Omega has made for many many years, there's no shortage of find more than just a few that can set itself apart from the more famous models. Agree, the Speedmaster is a much more versatile chronograph to dress up or down compared to the Speed-timer.. although, you could do well with one of the other Speed-Timer variants such as a 6138... something where there isn't a strong red & blue accent on the bezel and more toned down which would greatly lend itself to more strap pairing options and versatility in its appearance.. I think it's mainly the red & blue tachymeter which makes locks it into the sport category. A good video to compare, but ultimately they really are different chronographs.. significantly different enough as to not be directly comparable.. both good with their own history and merits worthy to both be held in high regards, imho.
I have both (kinda) a yellow 6139 and a Speedy Aventurine here in Brazil. Different watches for different moods for sure. Both cornerstones on any serious watch collection.
The Seiko 6139-6002 worn by Colonel William Pogue during 84 days aboard Skylab 4 mission had a full yellow dial as can be seen in a dozen NASA photos !
Hello - You purchased a replacement presidential band for your 6139 silver from uncle seiko. They have several would you have the band model you purchased?
Very exciting episode, Good Sir. I enjoy the connection to history and your excellent comparison between the two amazing pieces. Now, time to check out a good field watch in your Amazon store to find my way around on this flat earth.
Thank you for another great, funny, and informative video!! I own a Speedmaster and love it! I have a "space" watch collection and hope to get a 6139 at some point. BTW a DW1600 has also been in space.
NASA gave the Speedmaster an official and historical edge. The Speedtimer and Bulova moonwatch do have more interesting "rebel" histories, with the Speedtimer adding a rarity appeal.
The Speedmaster is probably the most versatile watch you can own and the Speedtimer is for roasting watch snobs that don't realize that Seiko was the first to successfully produce an automatic chronograph. I'll take both please!
i have a march 71 all original water resist pogue that i inherited and i have a 2015 speedy[ hesalite] and i love both, pogue for the vintage classic 70s look and the speedy because well its a speedy whats not to love.the pogue i stripped and serviced myself, the speedy will go back to Omega lol.
I don't own either of these watches. The Speedy has such a fan following that I did my research long ago and went to the Omega AD and had the salesperson go through their spiel to sell this watch to me, but I never bought it. It never became a grail for me. But when comparing it to the Seiko Pogue, I prefer the Speedmaster. Jory seems to prefer the silver dial watches of the Pogue and the Certina he owns, not me.
Seems hard to compare those two when you consider pricing.... my Pogue was under $200 in fully functional shape with the yellow dial, my Speedy was, well..., significantly more. The Speedy gets comments from many folks, the Pogue gets a smile from those that know watches. I wear the Pogue more... need to find a silver dial variant. Be aware though, many Pogues on the market aren't fully functioning... the crown function is not like an ETA2824. Parts aren't common, and finding watchmakers familiar with the movement can be tricky. There is a reason that really pristine examples aren't cheap... my $200 Pogue was sheer luck.
I love the look of the speedtimer but it’s hella pricy compared to the 6139. And the 6139 is 1970s sexilicious. Which is why I used to own 5 6139s (at the same time - down to a more reasonable 2 now 😂) and never had a speedmaster.
The 1969 Speedmaster had an MSRP of $195 in gold backed USD. The Seiko Pogue was $71 in post gold fiat USD. Almost all 6139s are made of aftermarket parts. Pogues are a minefield IMO. If Seiko rereleased a Pepsi bezel, yellow dial chronograph as the New Pogue for 1/3rd or less of a new Speedy aka under $2k - then it would sell like hotcakes. Unfortunately, Seiko wants to be further up market and Grand Seiko sells for Rolex money. Grand Seiko thinks it is worth 2x Omega! I'd go for a used Speedy Reduced over a new Prospex Chronograph and I'd have money to spare. As for the 6139, might as well just get a sub $500 franken-watch and love it for what it is - a vintage Japanese watch with tons of character. Beware the service cost though.
Yeah , lateral cluctch adding 1/2 more seconds in a crucial landing ... Well Nasa you chose the wrong tech.. Seiko is vertical clutch so technologically superior movement... Omega is just a tale for the short minded.. Also Omega is probably the only brand who reduces quaility of their movements with the 861
Jory can you please help settle a debate between my friends and I? It involves roman numerals on dials, specifically my Stowa marine classic 40 with roman numerals. Now, they say it's an old mans watch (jokingly) and only old men like roman numerals, I retort by telling them they're uncultered swine. What's your take on roman numerals? All opinions from the comment section would also be appreciated, thanks guys!
There is a watch channel which is dedicated to the "man on the moon". I am not so keen on that channel's host he comes across as a parrot with tourettes.

Invicta always win. A swing would land it on the moon. Now they going for 70mm

This comment is mandatory at this point because of the fans. A Vostok would be a better choice.
There’s not even comparison... omega without even thinking
Edoardo F why u say that?
Yes ! Why ? Mr Pogue took the 6139 with him in the space... in addition to the Omega... there is a reason... what do you think about that ?
The Speedy was issued to him by NASA- the Seiko was brought along on his own accord.
Yes... but Id like to know why Edoardo F thinks there is no comparison...
Just because its Omega, a very expensive swiss brand ?
Even 007 had a Seiko... if I may...

Glad to hear! :)

I have a speedy and a gold faced 1972 Pogue my first real watch given to me by my Grandad when I was a teenager love them both !
I have owned my yellow Pogue since 1976. It no longer goes.
Can you suggest a reputable repairer?
i bought my pogue 6139 6000 blue face in 1970. still wear it with all original parts today. always within + 3 sec a day

Tory, my daily is a speedy----------but in the 70's I owned a 6139--------agree with your assessment.---------------nice job!! yes I'm old
Could you do the real space battle:
Omega Moonwatch vs Fortis B-42 Cosmonaut!
USA vs Russia at it’s finest 😂
Speedy wins over the wonderful Pogue. If I were to buy one I think I'd go sapphire Speedmaster for maximum everyday wearability. Am I wrong?
No wrong answer if it is what you like and prefer...other opinions are irrelevant. Wear in good health for many years.
Yes, you are wrong! But you are also right. I have no attachment to either watches so I can understand the preference for the Speedmaster because of its specs and I do love a good manual wind watch.

Time teller, whats your opinion on the Omega speedmaster fois (first Omega in space).
I have both (kinda) a yellow 6139 and a Speedy Aventurine here in Brazil. Different watches for different moods for sure. Both cornerstones on any serious watch collection.
The Omega is probably the better objective watch, but I’m still a sucker for that Seiko!
Hi Jory, picking my Speedy up today a timely video cheers
The Seiko 6139-6002 worn by Colonel William Pogue during 84 days aboard Skylab 4 mission had a full yellow dial as can be seen in a dozen NASA photos !
6139-6005 was worn, not the 6002

Jared Campbell also DW5600 was seen on ISS crews
Nice comparison Jory, both icons in different ways. Shalom/Cheers
I'd go for the omega but only because its a pain in the ass to get an all original 6139 with a silver dial.
I like both watches, I like the fact the Seiko Speed Timer is the first automatic chronograph.
I believe Seiko was also first to achieve the combination of square case, automatic, chrono, beating Heuer by one month.
Please do the Bulova Moon watch vs Omega speedmaster
Another great video my man!
You messed up when you didn't do a comparison between Rolex and MVMT. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???
My mate Robin's got one. Been wearing everyday since 1960 something
Which one?

I disagree. The Vostok Amphibia is the best space chronograph.
24h steve zissou and the life cosmonautic! :D
Vostok Amphibia best field watch. And best breed of dog.
Russian watches always look unfinished inside
Jory you never answered which one you prefer??.... slick bastard LOL. Great video I would take the pogue hands down🤟
Anybody can have an omega speedmaster, but a silverdial 6139 is a unicorn that comes up once every so often.
I don't own either of these watches. A Sturmanskie gets my vote for a space watch. If it needs to be a chronograph than a Strela....
You should add to space chrono race strela cosmograph
What's an affordable alternative for either one? Thanks for the video!
Bulova Lunar Pilot. Casio Edifice EF503. You could probably get a non Chronograph Fortis Cosmonaut for relatively less too.
I'd love to own either...

Speedmaster. No doubt. Good show, BTW.

Speedy for me but that Seiko is nice too

Undoubtably. Is that a New England term?
Man can I have the ocean diver u r giving away( I sound so needy). That watch will probably be my first real watch
What? You have to pick one, who won?
You make want to had I'm collection the seiko chronograph
I have both. Speedy wins hands down. Seiko is still cool though
for a very rich person, you need to have both. If you were lucky enough to have bought a 6139 in the early 70s for 125 bucks, you are very lucky (me).
The 1969 Speedmaster had an MSRP of $195 in gold backed USD. The Seiko Pogue was $71 in post gold fiat USD. Almost all 6139s are made of aftermarket parts. Pogues are a minefield IMO. I m listennnnnniiiiiing up ohhhhh GREAT ONE
The Fortis Cosmonaut would like to have a chat with you...
Late night noti gang 🙃🔥⏱
The seiko doesn’t hold a candle to the omega. we landed on the moon and the earth is round..... ah there all is well again.
A better comparison for the Speedmaster would be a Fortis Official Cosmonaut, a Strela or a Sturmanskie as rival space watches.

Hey we all know that the vostok amphibia is the best chronograph
I guess both watches tells time

"Uncultured swine" is a old man phrase. Nothing wrong with it but just saying.
Stick and Arabic indices FTW.
Roman numerals are so messy and unreadable, only a few watches can pull it off, like the Cartier Santos.
Stowa Marine ? Get the Romans marching. 'Tis no field watch. Also adds some old-world charm.
Unreadable ? It's simple though! ;)
I want the pogue

Seiko. I am 100% a Seiko fanboy, I compare other watches to Seikos, and Seiko usually wins. Yes, I am biased. No, I do not care
