One of the best albums of the 90s - it is strong from front to back, really zero weak spots, one of those rare ones. It sets such a high mark for Trip Hop it is the water mark for everything else even related to Trip Hop and even fits into alt/rock. It has a very specific, like, sitting on kitchen floor with a tape recorder, sampler, drum kit, turn tables, guitar and her incredible voice. You can get truly lost in this album. Some crushing even when totally stripped back tracks. "Wandering Star" would be a great example of the overall sound - this is almost more like a ballad compared to the rest of the record.
Fil, this is another classic track. Have always loved Beth's voice. Their live shows are a chorus of voices as the audience sings along. #QcumberSquad #Portishead - Fil, I'm off back to the study.
Good God thank you for this one. It's pronounced Portis-Head. Beth is a beast. My favourite female vocalist of ALL TIME. This band is truly timeless. 🎯
Everyone not from the UK pronounces it like that but the town is close to me, they are pronounced more like Por-tus-head if you use the West Country accent or Port-is-head for queens English speakers
Portishead are an English band formed in 1991 in Bristol. The band is named after Portishead, Somerset, eight miles west of Bristol, along the coast. The band comprises vocalist Beth Gibbons, multi-instrumentalist and producer Geoff Barrow, and guitarist Adrian Utley.
walking through the halls of my high school, headphones blasting this to drown out everything else, trying not to engage, avoiding eyes, trying to hold things in and not to emote. the musical swells were when I saw "her", and the immediate drops that follow are a reminder that I'm not part of "her" life... and wont be. more swells that are just me stumbling through the halls to class, just to sit there and wait out the time between those erratic/hopeful/damned social interactions in the halls. Begging the day to end before I break character and cave, before I crack. This is life... everyday... for years...

Maybe it reminds you of Glory box, Portishead's most famous song that you must have heard for sure
The live Roseland NYC performance in 97 will blow you away.
Yo what was that music you were playing at the end?
So many memories with this song... Thanks! So good!
It was the memory of heartache

Thank you.Really.Thank you.
Gotta say, listen to the Aesop Rock mashup of Babies With Guns over this song. Too good.
Eerily soothing is spot-on. I’ve described her singing and lyricism as “uneasy comfort.” Check out her recent solo debut.
Very intellectually thought out.
And welcome to the world of Mono.
