Which is the best Rolex Submariner?

- I take a close look at the new and previous generation Submariners... I also highlight how bad the scratches are on my DJ41 - big thanks to @characterwatches (IG) and @workingtonwatches (IG) for the loans.
Definitely the new generation but black or green??
Green for me given the chance.
Another very enjoyable video, great to see a proper watch video with two cracking watches. Favourite watch you tuber.👌
wow vert kind pal,, really appreciated!! (and the cheque is in the post🙌😁)
Absolutely- the New Rolex Submariner LV (Cermit /Starbucks) is the current best modern Rolex sport model
The new Sub41LV is a rockstar. It’s perfection and is THE modern Sub to own on many levels. The green bezel is just enough to “pop” on the wrist without screaming “GREEN”.
Just a bit of green works so much better for me as well
Love the intro 🤣 You crack me up mate 🤣 It’s a good point about the green on the Starbucks though. Without the hype and the artificial value inflation, the black is just so classic and always will be. The topic of the strap though, I know you like to swap straps like a good’n and a Sub on rubber is just 👌🏼 21mm is definitely a bit of a bummer for the strapage ☹️
Great assessment of green vs black. The green looks cool but the black is versatile and timeless.
Always loved the GMT master ii. But recently wonder is the sub a better option
I personally like the look of the 16610/16800 a decent bit more.....less blocky looking... BUT..... The first time I held a vintage rolex in my hand, the bracelets shattered my dreams and aspirations almost instantly (their light, flimsy and rattly feel) .... The modern bracelets (and the ceramic bezels to an extent) really did make these watches the best in terms of durability, fit, style and functionality.... And now I imagine even better accuracy than before (not that outstanding IMHO before)..... The case taper definitely was a welcome addition and I would go for the black... Its more classic and that green is somewhat too bright when you see it in the metal....
5 digit 14060M 4 liner ultimate classic sub. Great video matey
Nice video - great to hear two watch buddies getting together finally and having a few beers etc. Personally I’m leaning toward the green but probably due to me never owning that one and the allure of something different.
cheers pal,,, yeah the green would be amazing in the collection but all black for me
Holy shit your 40mm Sub looks so gorgeous with all the dings and scratches.
Cool photography / shots of the watches mate - well in
Cheers pal,, appreciate that
Great review. Both watches are beautiful timepieces and would love either on my wrist 👍
The squareness of the 116610 LN harkens back to the subs of the 1950s. I love the classic 40mm dimensions and boxiness. Bracelet is the most comfortable on a watch in my opinion. Agreed the perfect go anywhere do anything watch of course that is until you’re realizing you’re going somewhere you can’t wear it because it’s the most recognizable/iconic watch in the world. That’s why I have my CWC SBS Diver as my back up, love that watch too.
All things being equal, I'm a green fan. Just my favorite color. I agree the new lug taper design is better, but as for case size/shape, the older 14060M model is my favorite.
Own both but prefer the green simply because it's less common. Was on a plane recently and 4 people on the plane had the same black sub on. That said, the black is more classic and versatile.
Where was the plane going?
I had the black sold it and got the green just hits different
I have the new 41mm . Brother has the maxi case. 41mm considerably better. Much more balanced. Wears super comfortable.
The new Cermit is better than the black/black. The black/black is nice but I think gets boring.the green bezel provides a splash of color that keeps it interesting.
I prefer the black myself. But I can see what you mean about the Cermit more eye catching with the splash of colour . But to me the black is more versatile and iconic .
@@johncoyle8191les 2 c’est cool
the black is beautiful, timeless, a statement. as much i want to buy in to the hype, the kermit/starbucks just doesnt do it for me
The green is an amazing color. I wish the 116610lv would’ve had a black dial because I prefer the 40mm model.
Great comp video...shout out to Workington for loaning out his Sub( sorry he trashed your house 😂. )Black is my color...i'm not a huge fan of that particular shade of green on the bezel.
cheers mate,, thanks for the comment, always look out for them 👍🙌☺️
Both. Yes. All of them. Amazing time pieces. Legends. I’d go with the green.
Your right .lve got both and the 41mm is just nipped and tweaked to perfection. It’s just a bit more uniformed but they are both brilliant..
Just a little tweak and its made a substantial difference,,,, lucky you having both!
@@watchandrew yeah I’m lucky I suppose . However my five Rolex are kept in a vault . It’s 45 miles round trip so it’s a hassle if you want to change out so don’t tend to bother Wasn’t meant to be the case I initially bought to wear ..but Thats the problem when you collect higher end . no way I’m leaving 60 grand worth of watches lying about the house so a vault becomes essential... I’ve got a few daily wear pieces that are decent and this work fine .for me ,
My Rolex is a Sub, but it is a 1967 5513 no date on riveted bracelet with folded hollow links, with patina etc. It wears super comfortably, lighter than modern divers. I would not swap it for a modern diver. But, as you may surmise, I won't take it in the water.
The 126610 regardless of the bezel color looks more balanced and more like the submariner of old. Regarding the bezel I think it depends on what is or isn’t in your collection. If I were a one watch guy I would go with black dial and bezel. If I had a large enough collection I might go with the green bezel to liven up my collection
Black will always be the classic choice
Also what’s the bezel like on the planet ocean, I owned the first planet ocean can’t remember the bezel action, it wasn’t an then
Best Subs for me would be the cyclops-less no date and the Kermit.
As much as it's fashionable to knock Rolex, the Sub is an absolute icon.
Both great looking watches mate . Never owned 116610 but I do have the new version which in my opinion is one of the best watches out there. I think the slight changes to lugs makes it even better . Agree about the green one , and I'm a celtic fan . The black is more classic and adaptable . The sub is probably one of the most famous watches out there and has been around for decades. So it must be doing something right . Great review mate . And man of your calibre should not be in a backroom Andrew , you need a state of the art studio , befitting the mega star you are 🤣🤣. Keep it up buddy
haha,, cheers mate - I will try get myself in a studio set up very soon!! The Sub is an all time classic,, Once I get one back I'll probably stop this ridiculous hobby😂
@@watchandrew honest I believe you Andrew. I told my good lady that after I got my sub. You should have seen her face when I put my name down for the Pepsi . Priceless 👍
I also have the problem with digging crown. Which generation is more digging with crown, Andrew?
I think they are the same mate
I still have my 2002 Rolex Sea Dweller along with a Daytona panda ceramic, GMT Master II Batman, and a Submariner Starbucks. I alternate wearing each one for a week at a time, and all of them are in as perfect condition as when I bought them new. I’m always baffled by others that have Rolexes that are scraped up and gouged….are these people taking transmissions out of cars while wearing their Rolexes? I wear mine and they are in mint condition, but of course I don’t wear them while working on my cars and motorcycles.
Is the bezel a little bit bigger on the new iteration ? Mine looks a little bigger to my eye than my previous 116610 LN
I'm not sure pal, sorry
I believe I saw 0.5mm bigger
The new Rolex submariner LV is perfect- Not sooo greenish like the Hulk and not so square plus a better movement … simple the best you can get 3:48
I've enjoyed your video Sir as I have both those watches, rather the Hulk and the new black sub 2022, along with a gold Oysterflex 🐼 dial Daytona and two tone chocolate diamond dial Date Just. So yes I admit I am an addicted also! :-)
The Rolex 2020 black dial 41mm is the one, l prefer the no date 124060, the best 1 watch ever.
Best intro ever!!😂😂😂
haha!!! cheers pal
Would you recommend to get the date or no date version?
Already have a batgirl .-.
as a one watch collection - I would always want a date
I enjoy this video, I own both Starbucks and no date sub, great watches
I have a Hulk and the new no date (also Airking and exp2). Personally the 2020 bracelet is too big in my eyes. The width of bracelet and clasp is massive and the taper is one link more which makes a huge difference. The old sub was called a maxi case well now we have a maxi bracelet. When I change from a 20mm Rolex to this 21mm it’s so obvious. That is my only gripe with it. The moment is better on the new obviously tho it’s rotor can be heard but only in very quiet spaces the older moment was silent. That all said they are both amazing watches and you can’t go wrong with either. In 10 years Rolex just need to get away from maxi dial and bracelet and give us the 2020 look but with out the size. I agree with your comments about the green boosting the price. But each to there own.
Well said mate. I had the sub date 41mm and agree the bracelet is a bit too wide and the watch is on steroids. My YM 40 with 20mm bracelet and 40mm case wears much better.
Not a fan of the maxi case. I haven’t handled the new 41mm so I can’t say if better or not. Looks more balanced to the eye though
defo more balanced...
Sold my black 40mm sub date and I’ll never go back. Great watches. Shit respect for customer at AD’s.
yeah, It's a poor do isn't it James.
Oh that intro.....lol.
The new one with no date for me.
The Kermit for the win, but only by a smidgen
either you can't really go wrong can you
Great vid! I got super lucky with a 3 week wait time on my 124060 at retail from my AD. Didn't have time to even ponder tryin to get a 40 at crazy gray market prices.
3 weeks??? Nice work!
Price hype and everything else aside My vote goes for the Kermit but I wish they made a no date Kermit. It goes Kermit , no date , date
I just wish they would produce the Hulk still.
Newer Sub looks more balanced with the thinner lugs.
You posed a good question, if the green sub had the residuals of a Tag, would every man and his horse want the new green sub?
I really don't think they would like it at all!!
Not a big fan of the Kermit, prefer the hulk . But you can't go wrong with black , can you. It's just so much more versatile, especially on a diver. To be honest though I wouldn't want to spend 8k on any watch. To satisfy my hulk craving I purchased a green rado captain cook . Wonderful watch , nice and thin and very classy on the beads of rice bracelet. Also a strap monster. Having said all that though if I did pay 8k on a watch , then it would have to be rolex, as they have proved to be great at value retention , so I could understand why you would. I personally get enough joy out of my mid tier seiko spb051, not to.worry about other black divers, and again it's a strap monster. Not a huge fan of bracelets, look great on the wrists etc but I like leather and NATO straps better. Just love changing the look of a watch with different strap options. My rado captain cook is 21mm wide at the lugs, but all my leather 20mm straps fit it fine with no gaps noticeable. So the 21mm lugs on a lot of new watches are not that big of a deal as some make out.
But I'm not sure you would want to change a metal sub bracelet for a strapcode bracelet , anyway lol.
Green is colour of the moment - black is a classic
true
Is Workington watches free for a pint later? Sounds like an absolute legend
I wouldn't go that far 😂
Can’t go wrong with that Rolex/cannabis/$ green lol. but black is amazing too. It’s kinda uncommon to see a black sub nowadays since no1 wants the supposedly boring color
Great review. I prefer the newer version. The new (temporary) location really works by the way👍
cheers Mark, appreciate that and thanks for the feedback on the location, I wasn't sure how well it would work😁👍
Returns are High with the new Rolex movement - from What i heard from my dealer they have quit many returns on the new movement😅
No one is returning Rolex subs
I do like the maxi case better little bit of more watch which I like
I like that you mention the black being better in a world absent money and clout. I agree. I have the hulk, but the 126610LN is better.
I think most would pick the black
The dirty little truth is that in a world absent money and clout Rolex would be a ridiculous proposition that nobody sane of mind would even consider. Any knockoff/hommage worth its salt is virtually winning hands down , without even trying, in a quality/price ponderated contest, not to mention that some are almost indistinguishable for the naked eye.
I love the 1680
I haven’t even watched this video yet but I’ve got a question for you. It seems to be the general consensus that Rolex bezels are much better than omega. I tried my mates gmt 2 up against my omega seamaster and I thought they were about the same, can you please clear this up for me . If it is the case how come omega can’t produce a similar bezel bearing in mind the level at which they are ? I must say commenting your wonderful video now, I love the old sub , when it came out I didn’t but I love it now. The 41mm I love that as well. I’ve been looking at the bran new tag aqua racer lately, the fine adjustment bracelet the coin edge bezel. Although it does remind of the seamaster. Thanks Andrew great video great accent. Let’s hope England go all the way. I used to work in London and traveled in from Essex every day , all the city boys wear Rolexes which made them a bit common, take care lad ✌️
The Sub bezel is the best, just has the right balance of firmness, lack of movement, sound, clickyness and feel!!! Omega is not far behind but just doesn't give you the same vibe,,,,, I think previous generation bezels got flack for being too stiff in the Seamasters, then too lose,,, now just about right but just not as nice as Rolex
@@watchandrew thanks 🙏 for coming back to me Andrew, I appreciate it . I’m have to find some one who’s got a sub and ask them ‘ do you mind if I twiddle your bezel mate’. Years ago I owned a sub and and gmt2 but I was in my thirties then , getting on for 60 now, the watch that has given me the most satisfaction over the years was the for runner to the current tag aqua racer, it was the tag 2000 series blue dial quartz. I loved 🥰 that old thing. Take it easy mate love your show and your style and enthusiasm. I thought I would of grown out of watches by now, my first Rolex was an op blue dial with a cyclops which my boy who was 2 at the time got it out of my drawer and used it to rub on the concrete floor pre sapphire crystal, I was so pleased 😀 lol
I’ve owned both. The submariner bezel is FAR better than omegas. The only thing that comes close to it is a Doxa
Thanks for the reply’s guys, I wonder why they can’t get the bezel just right, everything else on the watch is fantastic
the 16610/16613 is the last great sub. probably the best too
😂
I have owned them all and the Sub41 is the most perfect version of the modern Sub. The larger dial and hands give it now perfect dial to bezel ratio. The wider bracelet and clasp give it more wrist presence. After owning the previous LVc (hulk}, I find the black 126610LN to be the most attractive. On the new LV, oddly enough Rolex kept the milky green bezel which I didnt like on my Hulk and took away the best sunburst dial which made the hulk ? This leaves the new LV not great in my eyes.
you've had some great watches!! and make some points
The best for me 5513 gilt with strap 7206 i have this Watch and 16610ln and 126610lv
Good review as per
Black for me
cheers mate,, new version black for me
I find the ladies love the green dial!
Then I need a green dial in my life!!!
16mm tapered clasp
Is more comfy
I prefer the older version and in black. I like the squarness (is that a word?) of it.
I think it is a word! and I get what you are saying....
Green would suit you Andrew , the tats etc
Cheers but unfortunately the price doesn't suit my bank balance 🤣 ~ amazing watches and the green is very cool
I have both. Easily the 126610LN
thats just greedy and I'm jealous!
Black is more versatile. People shouldnt just focus on premium on top of retail price. In future, If I wanna gift my son my submariner it d be definitely black one.
The old generation 20mm bracelet is lighter and more comfortable specially for smaller wrists.
Interesting perspective 🤔
Green
Cool video mate. I think the modern ones are better. I wouldn’t say no to the last gen though. 😅 (stop showing your back hole on you tube 😂)
Cheers pal, the modern are the best for sure but I wouldn’t turn my nose up at the last gen, having said that I tried on a sub 25years old today and it still looked the business!!
I’ll try keep my back hole closed and private 🤣
I prefer 40mm hulk 41mm on my wrist look abit too big for me
It would be the newer one for me.
I'd always go the latest version... although I've never had a Seamaster yet and had 3 of the last gen
The Starbucks and it’s not even close
It’s 41mm and not 21mm
Beggars can’t be choosers.Love them all .👍
good point,,, I'd love a submariner back and wouldn't be fussed which one
Old generation.
That bracelet is way too broad and will only fit and look good on bigger wrists.
People don't think of that.
The lugs look better yes.
The super case was a design error by Rolex. They knew it and fixed it with the new 2020 submariner. The new sub looks much more proportional and also wears better on the wrist.
Kinda true but when this becomes vintage, doesnt the error/weird one always more popular in the future??
@@timchan334 first of all, we’re talking 30 years from now before the super case subs will be anything close to vintage. Secondly, Rolex cranked these out by the millions for nearly a decade. They aren’t rare, and they never will be. Now, if they made them for only a year or two, and then went back to the more traditional case, then yes, I would agree. But that’s not the case
I'll always stand by the no date sub as the best submariner hands down
its a classic but for an everyday watch I'd always need a date
IMO No date is best for pre-ceramic Submariners but the date helps fill the extra negative space of the ceramic Submariners especially the 41mm Sub
FACTS
Why? I’m considering buying one. Thanks
It’s a tough one. I prefer the new one, but making an already big clasp, bigger, is a negative.
very close decision to be honest
Hey I can't afford that type of stuff mate lol
haha, they are out of my range until I sell a kidney!!
Looks same size
Date sub Starbucks . Can’t afford it though
black all the way
5513
best rolex submariner es de no date 41
Why fix something that wasn’t flawed? The 116610 40mm was perfect and had been since 2012. And the 40mm profile has been since the 1950s. Lighter thinner slimmer is the way forward just like the DJ 41.
it definitely wasn't broken but I do think its an ever so slight improvement
not a real comparison: the new model is better from every point of view. Then if you like the older one more, that it is just a matter of taste
Definitely the 41mm Black, I'm on a 'list' for a no date one.
Had no interest in Subs until I got my BB58 Blue, such a gateway drug, hard to avoid moving up to Rolex from Tudor.
yeah it's just a slippy slope from here pal,,, enjoy it while you can!😂
Ohhh same as well. I initially got a BB58 Navy and caught the bug 😭. I was able to get a Sub no date for my dad then a GMT Batman and an Explorer for myself. But now I’m eyeing a blue DJ. It’s that slippery slope to an abyss haha
Don’t say that, I just got a BB58 blue two weeks ago.. 😂
@@mindgraphy_ Keep that high from your honeymoon phase with the BB58 and then you’ll be safe 😄
