can you share the settings for the portraits please?

I mainly shoot my portraits at F3.5-F4 especially if it's a tighter focal length like 85mm because I already get so much compression.

Man you are gonna convince me to buy it ! I saw this camera from a staff member from Cinestill praise it with the EF 50mm 1.2 ! And the price you can’t argue with it ! Great another camera I don’t need but gonna end up buying it

I have the EOS-1N and the RS version. I have yet to process any film. Each camera has film loaded, but it's me, bad back and all. I will get the opportunity to test these cameras' functionality. Plus I have all of the chemicals for, color or b/w and slides, in-house and don't have to depend on a second party to develop the film. Both cameras feel nice in my hand and the weight is bearable, even at my age and physical condition. Keep on shooting and have fun at it.

I bought an Eos 1N and I noticed that sometimes the exposure indicator in the view finder become barely visible in some part. Whi this?

I haven't had that issue personally but hopefully there is a fix for it!

Nice one, Josh, and the EOS 1N is an underrated camera by a long mile (which means they're cheap to pick up!) Actually, before you splash out on a more expensive lens, I love the 1N partnered with my 40mm f/2.8 STM. That lens is really affordable, sharp yet characterful, and an absolute gem. I happen to love the focal length too; it allows the subject a little breathing space without being too wide.
As for the grain, this 'could' be due to metering being slightly off (matrix isn't fool-proof), and then having to make up for the underexposure in the scan. It's almost impossible to know from this distance, but I doubt the lens is what's emphasising the grain. I could be wrong, but I'd say the issue is more likely somewhere in the exposure/dev/scan chain than the optics.
Keep working with that camera though, it's an absolute beast!

Agree with a few of these points. The 40mm is my fav lens, I use it on my 5Dc and my elan ii. As for the 50, everyone raves about how sharp it is for the price; I can't see any logical reason to blame it for grain structure which is way more likely in the development/scanning process. Photos looked great though Josh!

How does this camera compare to the Canon eos 1v?? I'm debating between the two. I would greatly appreciate input and opinions on the two cameras.

    • @JoshKoby
      @JoshKoby  5 місяців тому

The EOS 1v has a few more bells and whistles, including better AF with more AF points. Is it a better camera? Of course. But, if it worth the 3-4x price tag? I personally don't think so. I'd go with EOS 1-N and invest in better glass!

Extremely well presented video. Perfect amount of chat, imagery and information - also, not a 30 minute video for the sake of it.
Regarding the camera, I currently have a 5D Classic with a range of lenses, some L series, others not, and I am after a film camera to work with. This might be the one!

Nice video, Josh, and even better shots! I have an EOS 1N-HS that I picked up a few months ago, with a 50mm f1.4 on it most of the time. It is excellent, and feels more or less like a 35mm equivalent of my 5D MkII and 90D. I have shot mostly Ektar 100 with it so far, which has been excellent. You just can't go wrong. I'm keen to try my 24-70 L f2.8 on it.

@@JoshKoby I found the exposure/metering to be spot on with Ektar 100 (and this was the first time I had shot a roll). Very very accurate results and more or less a verbatim reproduction of what you see through the viewfinder.

It’s such a good film camera. Ive been having mine for two years and I’m so happy yourself one too. As myself, I prefer prime lenses, but I have a zoom lens from sigma F/2.8 is also a great start. It’s pretty pricey, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to try shooting different ranges.

I've been tempted,& I've looked for film stock focused books but I think UA-cam can be a good source of learning more of the ends,& outs in terms of various film speeds,& their effects in different lighting conditions? Seeing this video pop up reminded me that I have until the 27th to return mine, so need to put a roll in to see if there's any light leaks or other malfunctions-Thanks.

I have the Eos 3 , and apart from the auto eye focus. It’s pretty much the same camera. Except for the backplate you have.
The camera on its own does nothing to the film other than exposing it to light by opening the shutter and advancing it to the next frame. There is over and under exposing. But that’s just the timing.
Your lens has more influence to the film than you expect. And I don’t know exactly how this works with lens light reflection etc.
But I found there are some tiny but noticeable differences between the 50mm f1.8 and the 24-70 f2.8 L. In color contrast.
It’s more the sharpness of either lenses in the corners.
The biggest influence on the film is development.

One more suggestion - try overexposing Portra about 1 stop. I mean use 400 @200 or 160 @100. This will give you very nice, a bit washed up images.

Great video Josh! Just watched your unboxing and I think I am in the same boat as you. Ive tried so many film cameras. From the F3, Leica iii, Rollei 35 and countless medium format cameras, but just never connected with any of them. As a Canon digital shooter this seems like it's the camera for me. Same form factor as my 6D. Ebay here I come! Looking forward to your next video!

You may try over exposing the film a stop or so and don't change the developing.

Man, 50/1.8 is top glass hidden in plastick. It is damn good, L- lenses are only better built but optically 1.8 is really top (especially closed a bit). Only downside od older "nifty-fifty" is 5 blades apurture. Do not be mislead by Canon`s naming - there are lots od hiden gems without "L" in designation (85/1.8 is another). I am in Canon for years, have lots of "L" lenses but bo not feel any need to upgrade from 50/1.8 (other than it being worn of by constant usage). Anyway - lens you have is great. Plus it is small and lightweight - put it next to Sigma Art 50/1.4 and you will understand that.
