I had never heard of it but have found my self doing a similar style when practicing claw hammer. I found myself planting my fingers as I was trying to concentrate on the fretting.
I am trying to learn the clawhammer style but the 2 finger style looks interesting also. Should I stick to one style or try to learn two styles simultaneously? I'm concerned with the clawhammer picking that goes with the fingernail side and the two finger style does just the opposite.
Have you tried it with a thumb and finger pick? I've watched a couple of videos of two finger style with picks and I like the way it sounds a little better, even though I also like how clawhammer sounds without any picks. I am finding that I like the pre-Scruggs styles of banjo a little bit more than I thought I would. They seem to be easier to grasp than what he did, which certainly isn't a criticism of his style of playing.
Think it a bad idea to try that out if you are just starting, been trying to get started with bluegrass (Jim pankey series) or should I come back to this later?
Daniel Martin yes! It’s more or less just like drop-thumbing when you downpick, dropping the thumb to the 2nd string and syncopating the rhythm with your thumb string. Try to emulate your regular bum-ditty pattern into two-finger & experimenting/ playing around helps a lot.
A tenor banjo is a 4 string. So if you get any 5 string banjo yes you can use it. If it’s really short scale it will sound different. I have a 25” scale banjo that I play in every video you see now (the newer ones).
Can regular pop music be played in 2 finger style? I don't care for the traditional banjo songs ( sorry about that ) but I do want to play the banjo because of the sound.
When I was young my middle finger was crushed in a oilfield accident. It should of been cut off but I kept it. Its been holding me back on my banjo playing, I'm gonna have to go with two finger. No 3finger or claw hammer for me
I love your style of teaching!! I can get it!!! So grateful for your shares!!
I love this! Keep the 2 finger pickin coming. I’ve been into a lot lately!
Thanks! Will do!

I don’t like the feel of fingerpicks. Yep 2 finger is real easy to pick up.
My papaw played 2 finger with steel finger picks. Usually gospel and bluegrass songs and usually on a resonator. It's all about what you enjoy
Great lesson Mandy !!
Thanks Bill

Can you use the drop some on the two finger-picking as well

Nothing wrong with 2 finger, it’s a great style. Have fun!
Don’t have to use middle for claw hammer.
This is harder than it looks. I have to get into the rhythm for a week or so.
yep it’s definitely something different
