I really was expecting the tallest level to be the great pyramid in Atlantis in TR1, but it was Xian! wow! Also there is something almost poetic about temple of Horus being the lowest point Lara has ever delved into in the classic TR world.. I am not sure what but it made an impression to me. Maybe because it's the last level of her classic adventures.. the level of death.. not sure (not counting TR5 here cause those were flash backs of older adventures)
For sure Atlantis has the biggest hole of all TR games ☺Most of TR4 levels were cut to get more ressource to place enemies and moving objects in it, if you count the pyramid above it's probably even higher. Also in Horus Lara can walk almost from top to bottom while in most levels she can't reach the ceiling or decor🤗
Amazing video. It's really interesting to study the trivia of the original TR Tetralogy. And I am quite surprised honestly. I expected the 'Floating Islands' to have crazy altitudes, but it's even more amazing, it uses a "trompe-l'oeil" process with it's playing arena, and make us believe that this level is really floating in nothing. As for the Temple of Xian, it could have fooled me ! I always thought that the deepest level I ever played was Atlantis, because we keep climbing and climbing this pyramid, but it looks like the Temple of Xian takes the cake by sending us to the centre of the Earth. Awesome !
Ty dude, you are right, the Floating Island entire box is clearly giant but I can't see its boundaries with these tools and I need to fix the camera somewhere to get values (I explain the process in description), and since it's full black I don't know where to stop, the boundaries box on this level only appears around the visible textures so I only checked the coordinates of the top and bottom texture, I suppose the very bottom is probably -30000 since Lara doesn't fall forever, it seems smaller than the giant hole of Atlantis (Lara screams more than 2 times there). It would clearly put this level upper in the ranking but not that much because its max value isn't that great. I was more surprise for Atlantis/St Francis/Sanctuary because in my previous calculation I got different results, ofc the method isn't 100% accurate, the margin of error could set one of them to 40000 (probably the limit of TR1). The fact they are all near this value suggest this was the limits, until Temple of Xian 🤣 The main hall with the dagger is already pretty big because of the ceiling, and the lowest point is in the long underwater parts with the gold-fish which is under the 2 waterfall and the big slide, we know it's tall because to exit the level there is the jumpers then giants ladders, and the bottom of these are already above the spider cave... so it's giant 😳
I'm really proud of the TR community has been banding together to make so much cool content, mods and so many unique facts about the series. Glad to get back into the OG series as a noob TR fan since the 90s who struggled hard on the first 5 games.
I like the effort and nostalgia value that you've put into these videos. Would like to see more of the randomness. Especially the new AI ones, do the newer Tomb Raiders too with the map comparisons.
I never realised how _compact_ Opera House is. The starting area wraps around the inside area so neatly! For reference, how tall is "a block" in this measurement system?
Ooh very interesting, never thought of that! I expected Madubu Gorge to win, but third place wasn't that far off of my guess :D Some levels quite surprised me, for example I didn't expect Jungle to be quite so high, despite the slope at the beginning. I suppose some levels were also "helped" by bottomless pits Lara can fall into.
Loved the video 💕 I completely ignored the title and my dumbass thought it was a general ranking, like wtf is wrong with this guy lol then I realized Btw size ranking would be cool.
I never wanted to 'code' as a game lover - pulling back the curtain kills the magic. Still, playing since pong one can't help but understand more as games got bigger and mods were introduced. Since I'll never play these originals again (that funny shaped Tomb Raider Gold box) seeing the levels like this is fascinating and nostalgic. It also reminds me how games have evolved - not always for the better.
Oh, I was expecting some commentary in the video. Well, I was right that the Xian level was the highest and the train one was the lowest, so I'm happy.
Same, I didn't expect Temple of Xian being that tall, it means they already did the highest level in the second opus 😳 But it's not the largest, Tibetan Foothills is very very large 😳
I wish i understood what the numbers meant, im new to classic tomb raider level terminologies. Im assuming "height" is the number of blocks tall a level is? Not sure what the negative and positive numbers for min and max mean tho :( this is really cool regardless tho. Interesting to see how flat or tall some levels are :)
The 3D view are stored in a website that gives coordinates of the camera, so when you place the camera somewhere you get the X Y Z value, kind of like in Minecraft. These value are how the 3D box works, it can be very precise, because some blocks in the game aren't always the same as the others, it's also way harder to count them, especially for ceilings and decors. Some are more negative than the others, I don't know why, that's why I calculated the difference between min and max to get the height.
What's the most difference in height between neighbouring tiles AND the lower tile is not covered by water (at all or enough to prevent fall damage), nor it is a killing surface itself (acid, lava) - in other words, what are the most devastating falls possible? Invisible "real ground level" of Floating Islands is not included, I see.
Probably the Great Pyramid, if you manage to hit the plateform near lava from the top it's super giant. There is a big fall in the Obelisk of Khamoon too if you crash near the obelisk from the very top. The sphynx in the sanctuary is also very tall if you jump from the head. In TR2 there is a big hole in Tibetan Foothills, I doubt any level beats the great pyramid 🤔 You can estimate the bottom of floating island by calculating how much Lara screams, and it's only one time, so it's not that big 🤔
I want some theories about TR4 level 3, with red guy who has a torch. When we go half of the level he leave us and go run back where he go? I was searching for him everywhere but couldn't found it was make me scared xD I want to listen some theories of that level
I don't know, but in the 3D view some levels has negative value, most of them in fact, it's probably the box used to build them, the center is 0 0 0, maybe they extended the levels from the middle, we can't know ^^
Just wanted to say that I absolutely love how random some of your TR videos are

I don't know exactly but in TR1 the highest levels are about 54 blocks high if I remember well 🤔

Exactly dude I needed a reference so I took the lowest value
Yes. As I suspected, Offshore Rig and Diving Area actual levels are too big compared to the one shown in the loading screen.
Great idea for a video! Amazing the size of the levels.
