    In this video I take a a look at the third lens from Carl Zeiss in their Batis lineup, the 18mm F2.8. Its an ultrawide angle lens designed primarily for landscape and architectural photographers. Made for full frame and APSC crop sensor cameras, I have it mounted on my A7RM2 to see how well it performs.

    I just bought the 18mm Batis myself for my A6000 a couple of days ago. it's a seriously good lens and I'm amazed how little distortion you get from it.
    Yes, it's a little expensive but I think the Batis range is awesome. I've been very happy to have bought all three Batis' for my collection in readiness for when I eventually upgrade to a full frame camera.

    Anyone encountering buzzing AF problem like this : ua-cam.com/video/6EmpH3rsqz4/v-deo.html ? I think it happened on my 25 Batis a few times.

      Oh wow that sounds really bad! I haven't had that issue but I was say its more of a manufacturing fault so it might be best to take it back to Zeiss.

    With the introduction of the G master lenses, these series of lenses have been somewhat in the background, nice to see your review of the 18mm.

      I bought the GM 24-70 f2.8 but noticed that I'm using the Batis 25mm and 85mm more. The GM is so heavy... it somehow defeats the purpose of a lightweight mirrorless camera. I also have the heavy 16-35 f4 but would just love the Batis 18mm because it's so lightweight.

    Hey John I have found whilst recording video with this lens on my Sony a7rii it doesn't seem that stable when moving around or walking whilst recording.. Doesn't have stabilisation built in?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому +3

      It does have stabilisation built in but I would say the stabilisation works better for when you're standing still or doing slight movements. Its not going to be as good as a gimbal if you're walking around.

      Ok thank you! Just took it out for some shots of distant mountains etc.. Bit tricky to find its sweet spot for all round sharpness. Best result so far is at f11 but my left side edge is blurry.

    I have the 25mm Batis and it is great, but not wide enough sometimes. I am considering of getting the 18mm, but I hoped for an even wider lens (14-15-16mm). I was looking into 16-35, but I've read a lot of not so positive reviews about it. I currently have the Canon 16-35 f4L IS which on Canon camera is phenomenal, but on the Sony is not very sharp in the corners. And it is very bulky and heavy (~800 gr incl. metabones adapter).
    I even wrote Zeiss to throw me a bone and just tell if there's a new Batis coming out in the next 6 months, but they didn't wanted to tell :) So I'm not sure what to do. Every review I watch praises this lens and I've seen maybe all the pictures on Flickr's group, which look great.
    I was hoping the newly released Samyang 14mm 2.8 AF to be my dream lens, but the initial reviews of it are even worse than the 16-35.
    I'm not shooting professionally, but I love it and currently am on a slow switch from Canon. So what should I do? Should I wait or should I sell 1-2-3 Canon lenses and get this 18mm Batis :) I know it's a personal thing, but what do you guys think?

    • @JeffSereno
      @JeffSereno 7 років тому

      Stefan Totev The 18mm definitely gives you much more wide over the 25mm (even more than even I expected), and as I understand it, is currently the widest full frame lens for E-Mount.
      Compared to my old Sony APS-C 16mm pancake lens, the 18mm Batis is brilliant with significantly better image quality and clarity (but you'd expect that too).

      Voigtlander just released a 10mm f5,6 for Sony FE mount. I must say though that I'm very happy with my Sony 16-35 f4. It isn't made for bokeh so the aperture blades are not rounded. Because of this it creates fantastic sunstars! I absolutely recommend the 16-35 f4 because of this. But is is quite a heavy lens.

      how is it ??
      i am landscape and astrophotographer so i am really interested about coma,vigneting on this lens.

    • @stefantotev
      @stefantotev 7 років тому

      jozo šaravanja it is very good, although not as much as the 25mm. It has some distortion and in my testing it's not as sharp as the 25. Vignetting is not an issue, it's more apparent on the 25. I can't comment about coma, as I haven't tested it with Astro photography..
      The good thing is it is very light and accepts 77mm filters. It is wide enough for me, although it depends on what you're shooting. 18mm is still safe for people when positioned in the center of the frame.

    Purely based on sharpness and contrast, which one is better: Loxia 21mm or Batis 18mm?

    Thank you John for the review. Wondering if you think this would be a lens that would workout well for whats been called "wide angle macro?"

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  6 років тому

      You're welcome! While it can get as close to a subject that is 25cm away, I wouldn't exactly call it a macro lens. There is a Laowa 15mm wide angle lens that can also be used as a macro so that may be a good option for you.

      VESICA PISCIS Buying good lenses will REALLY show you what your A6000 can do.
      Be warned, once you buy your first proper lens, there's no going back! After I originally bought my 85mm Batis over a year ago, I just HAD to buy the 25mm and 18mm to go with it! =)
      Plus it also sets me up on an upgrade path to an A7-series full frame body down the track. Until then, my A6000 is still going strong.

    Hey John, just found your channel and loving your review videos! Question: I am looking for a camera that can shoot up to 30 min + able to change lens + a pop up screen that can flip around for selfie video recording. I have an A7 but its without the flip screen and the worse of all, the over heating is a big problem. The closest I narrowed down is the Canon 70D with 10-18mm but thats much bigger than i like. Do you have any camera recommendation? Thanks man!

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому +1

      How about the 750D? It's smaller than the 70D and still has all the things that you are asking for.

    Hi. I'm finding lens for real estate shooting. Which are you recommend?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  4 роки тому +1

      I would probably recommend the 16-35mm F2.8 because you have a bit of flexibility with zoom and you also have the f2.8 aperture which would be great for certain situations.

    Hey, is the widest lens you can buy for an A7? If not, what is?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  6 років тому

      If its in a prime with autofocus in the native E-mount, this is the widest. For a zoom, the Sony 12-24mm F4 is the widest.

    Hey there great review! I have an a7 and currently do a lot of landscape shots and night time shoots. Looking at the GM 16-35 of this 18mm batis lense. Is it worth spending the extra $$$ on the GM? This batis lense looks really sharp

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому

      Hmm that's a tough one. I haven't played around with the 16-35mm GM extensively but it was really good. No exactly sure how it would stack up against the 18mm batis yet though.

    • @AlexBuckMaurer
      @AlexBuckMaurer 7 років тому

      Elliot Shakespeare i Think you just need to figure out with yourself if you need the whole range from 16-35 or if an 18 mm prime will cover your needs 😊
