It is not true, that there's venom only in tropical snakes. We have venomus adders (Common European Vipers) all the way to Lappland and Siberia in Europe. Their venom is really strong, but because there is not so much of it, it very rarely kills. In Finland every year 50-150 people get bitten and the last death is from 1998. But you do need proper care and there are several nasty cases where the bite took a months to recover from.

After listening to this I could never have long term snakes as my ground is clay and no dry spot for them to live. I would rather have a snake hanging around me than the thought of those pet rats.

My wife is very afraid of snakes. So i sometimes have to kill them. Otherwise i let them do their thing. I remember getting bit by a snake when we were out camping after we were first married. We went swimming in the lake and a snake decided to come along headed in her direction so i was forced to interviene. It bit me but my wife never found out and never knew there were snakes in the water (im pretty sure that would have been the end of camping forever). I was fine, just put some peroxide on it. (Although i worried it might be venomous but i knew it wasnt likely).

I think I need to order some snakes. My son would love me for sure.

Hnnn. We have three types of viper in Romania. In regions were it freezes over during winter.
The horned viper especially being feared.
Then I know in the Bulgarian mountains you can find some snake the locals told me being ashy. Pepelnik snake or something. They love at +1000m altitude, so again, freezing winters.
Anyway, I could see Russia having dangerous snakes that survive cold as well

    I found it interesting :)
Last time I came across a snake was a few years ago, just let him slide away across the driveway into the grass. Was exciting in that ‘I’m kind of scared’ type of way. Not sure why I expect the snake to perform like a flying squirrel and launch itself at me 😅

I think the movies do a lot to stoke our fears. I never thought of them as scared and vulnerable before talk to Pete.

I forced myself to listen to this episode as I hate snakes! I hate the way they move and being surprised by them is the worst! However, I’m trying to appreciate/tolerate them. This episode helped a little more. It was very interesting.

Thanks Tammy. They are very fascinating if you take a minute to just watch them.

Do the garter coexist with the red or ring?

Good question. I'll have to ask him. I imagine they do but not sure.
