  • In this webinar Phil Christie and Ruth Fidler from Autism Associates provide an overview of the education and support needs of children with PDA. They outline how some of the strategies that are typically found to be effective for children and young people with autism (such as the use of routine, predictability and structure) need considerable adaptation, as individuals with PDA respond better to less direct and more collaborative approaches. They discuss types of educational provision that best suit pupils with PDA, the need for careful prioritisation, avoiding confrontation, using an invitational approach and promoting emotional well-being and resilience.
An extended question and answer session follows. Recorded in November 2017

Oh, this is making me realize that for me, a blank sketchbook can be a demand. Thus, I will often start (and make further entries) on the back page, or a random page-- somewhere where I'm not SUPPOSED to start/make entries. Wow!

Relating myself to others, then seeing the consequences others deal with made me use my anxiety to keep myself in check. That and if I did mess up.. I was usually comming down pretty hard on myself.

Our middle school called the Sheriff on my son because he refused to get into my car to go to school. Then did it again for refusal during school. Then , all in the same day, suspended him. His anxiety was so severe. He will never go back to school again.
