The size was never the thing, what makes it ugly is that design, Audi been making big grilles for a long time and they know how to design them, but brands like bmw and lexus dont.
They've copied Mazdas RX5 on the front and MX6&RX5 on the sides. :p Audi's front end (grill) looks more classy, BMW needs to work on the proportions a bit more....too late for these models.
The grille is not as bad in person. It’s just a lot bigger than the previous year’s model so it was more of a shock but not necessarily ugly. It’ll grow on you.
I like the grille but the location of the number plate is naff! Why make such a statement with the grill and then have the number plate mounted right in the middle of it! Just crazy!
I love the new front end. It has grown on me and compared to other grills in this class it’s average. I like different. Only real issues is the placement of the License plates in the front of these grills.
This is a good review and tells us that this is a typical BMW driver’s car with its lower COG and sporty hunkered down look and drive that only a SUV owner could wish for. BTW, I like the distinctive grille and I also like the names of the exterior colours on the video.
I can't get over that grill, it's bigger than the grill on their largest SUV's. How many people had to look at that and sign off on it rather than saying nah lets pare it down a bit. I really hope it flops and people lose their job over it. They must have addressed the grill in in their launch presentation or Q&A, what was their reasoning for it?
I think this is a very nice looking car. I like the grille and I like that it does not remind me of a BMW from the side. BMW drivers have very bad reputation. This is a really nice alternative to Mercedes C class, not to mention that I get more in this for the same money.
@@chasingcars They will of course get a reaction... however, I thought they wanted to sell cars? Styling is subjective, it may very well find a market.
Fugly face on it. Oh my eyes... Otherwise nice. But, no, I couldn’t. And i notice a range of much improved after-market replacement grilles available now too.
BMW recently defended the current designs saying they know many hate it but it's done mainly for the Chinese market who are now the biggest consumers and they love the big mouth and squinty eyes look. This is why many manufacturers are now walking the same path. The big vertical grill isn't new tho, go look at the 30s and 40s cars. TBH no BMW has ever had a good looking grill.
yeah but those long "nose" grills on the old 30s and 40s cars were designed for a purpose / fits into the lines and designs well (more space for grills vertically on the old cars). This new 4 series front look is just hurting my eyes. Comes from a designer point of view.
@@pregardt Agreed, the issue with the new grille isn't the grill but that it simply doesn't fit and looks completely out of place. I doubt you will see any of these at a classic car meet on historic plates in 30 years time.
@@chasingcars Yeah that grill shape fits more into the lines and the horizontal shape a lot better. My friend has a new 3 series and it looks really nice front and rear! The 4 series nose tried to be too different from the 3 series and mimic the old cars grill shape. I'm curious what will stay and change in bmw design language in the future. Nice video as always btw.
@@chasingcars Oh agreed, the 3 is far better than the 4 but TBH it couldn't get much worse. Stare at the 3 for a bit and the grill looks like sunglasses and not a puffer fish. The Chinese are loving the 4 tho and being the masters of crass bling expect more of this stying in the future from all and sundry.
Unpopular opinion: I like this grille. And it's not as big as an Audi's either, to name one competitor.
It's polarising, but is it bad to say it's almost growing on me? I think I'm going mad. It probably isn't. -Tom

@@frapshadow2255 Give you that. It's just that the size is the most commented on. But yeah...the design may not be the most elegant

My first reaction to the grille was yuk!, But now I think it is good, in fact quite beautiful.
Tom was like, "I usually do the luxury cars but this one waaay too ugly for me. John can you do me a solid?"
Lol. And John is our resident BMW expert. -Tom
@@chasingcars not a bad profession!
Lol!
7:23 Seagull almost died haha
They couldnt hide the radar into the badge, instead putting it in a weird spot in the grille.

I just hate the front 😂😂😂 the grill
Love the aggressive look of this car, it has attitude.
I like your honest review, keep up the good work mate
Thanks, will do!
That front grill looks like Adolf H! nice review!
Gosh now that you said it I can’t I see it
That front grille looks a bit out of place

Blacked out grille surround fixes front view in most colours - rest of package = very nice upgrade
I really love the design
Agree! Grill is new BMW template. And why not? Quality is top notch. The 4 is like a " mini" 8.

How much people hate it makes me want it more. Might trade in my f82 for the g82 M4 especially with X drive. That much power needs AWD
I've had two BMW 3 Series in succession. If the next 3 Series is as ugly as this 4 Series, I'm afraid I'll be looking elsewhere for my next car.
I'd say I doubt they will take the sedans in this direction, but there isn't much rhyme or reason to BMW design lately. -Tom
Yeah I agree with you guys that 430i is a better buy with enough power to put a smile in customer's face
The 430i is a well-balanced option.
I still can't get over that horrific grille It's a blunder for BMW
Will be interesting to see how it sells.
Time to bring back Chris Bangle..perhaps
Quite a few Bangle era BMWs have aged better than expected.
The Bangle E60 5 Series is now considered a classic design.
I would love one. I am always a sucker for a BMW and one that is not as bland as the competition, even if I’ll call my car Bugs Bunny.

Excellent review. Would buy one if I could swing it; but will have to stick with my 1 series.😃

Everything looks great except the grill
Yikes! What were they thinking when they approved the Bucky Beaver look. Looks like I will not be considering one then.
They were thinking they'd get attention, and they definitely have!
@@chasingcars They will of course get a reaction... however, I thought they wanted to sell cars? Styling is subjective, it may very well find a market.
It’ll look ok but most markets need to have a number plate on the grill.
Very true. I reckon a side-mounted plate - like a Giulia - could have been cool
Nice review. I would've like to see the boot at 05:37
Oh god, that grille totally ruined the car.
I really like the grill its so aggressive love it

Memories of a Ford Edsel.........didn't work then and definitely not now!
Where is Tom?
Who gonna pay $100k for 4 series.. I rather get Mercedes e class coupe in this price point
Don't be fooled by MSRP.
I'm a developer. I know what it takes to work with shitty designer and blind management. The result is typically a grill like this one.
it's cool
horrific design
looks like nissan altima
That grill 👎🏻
Appallingly styled car. Perfect example of why newer isn't always better.
Nice light interior, shame about the face.
That is one ugly grill... I’ll be keeping my series 6 for some time by the looks of it... 😎
6 Series is a lovely car
that grill looks stupid...? no thanks
Give up now while you are ahead. This video is so echoing. Wood be nice with some wood?
Buy a stinger, save 69k

I don't mind the grille on the current 3 Series - particularly the M340i with the muted grey/bronze grille colour. Of course, that's subjective. -Tom
