That was my hunch! Tried adding grease to center the retaining snap ring and it didn't work. Took the snap ring off, bent it tighter nice and even, and BAM! It popped right into place. You're a life saver in 2022!
I experienced the same pro problem. I ended up taking it to the mechanic. Always did the axel myself. But this was the first time i had that problem where it wouldn't go in for nothing. The mechanic wouldn't tell me how he got it in. When i asked him he just smiled.

Update: It ended up taking about 5 hours and it WAS the circlip. Two tries at reducing it's size and it finally went in over the clip. I'm no longer frustrated, just tired and sore. Thanks again.
I'm struggling to tighten the spring clip, any suggestions? Needle nose pliers seem to big to squeeze it and when I try to pull it off to tighten i feel like I'm gonna snap the clip.
Okay awesome got it in. I was having trouble with the passenger side but this trick worked just as well. Just like others I spent more than a day trying to get it in. Really appreciate your help!

The new snap ring is too big. You can freeze it below - 30 over night to push it in.

You should be able to pull it off the end of the axle and then squeeze it down.
