I am the youngest child of a functioning alcoholic mother who died of colon cancer in August of 1991. I tried 2 interventions with my mom without any help from my dad and two older brothers. They refused to participate in the interventions because they either feared her temper or refused to admit she had a problem. Both of the interventions I did alone and they ended in her cussing me out and almost turning physical. Even though they didn't work I would continue to talk to her letting her know I could see the pain and misery she was drowning in. I told her I would go with her to whatever treatment place she chose. If she wanted to go alone (so she could have privacy and feel free to open up without fear of embarrassment or judgment) it was okay. Unfortunately, she never did acknowledge her illness and died at the age of 51. If you are a loved one of someone who has a chemical dependency problem/illness please, don't give up! My mom was a beautiful, intelligent, loving person who was worth fighting for. Keep the faith and have courage. Press on!
