In Sergio Leone's Western masterpiece, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," Lee Van Cleef's character of the sinister mercenary, "Angel Eyes" or 'The Bad' is violently introduced. After rudely entering the home of former Confederate soldier, Steven’s and talking about a complicated story of a missing cashbox, and the three people who knew about it, his intensity leaps off the screen.
“I think (his) performance in this sequence is the best thing he did in this film. It is so sinister. He moves very slowly, his eyes absolutely riveted on his prey. He smiles in the most sinister way…I think this is Lee Van Cleef at his best..he was never more sinister than he is in this film.” -Sir Christopher Frayling
Clarence LeRoy Van Cleef Jr. (1925 - 1989) was an American actor. He appeared in over 170 film and television roles in a career spanning nearly 40 years but is best known as a star of Italian Spaghetti Westerns, particularly the Sergio Leone-directed Dollars Trilogy films For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). He received a Golden Boot Award in 1983 for his contribution to the Western film and television genre.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a 1966 Italian epic spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood as "the Good", Lee Van Cleef as "the Bad", and Eli Wallach as "the Ugly". Director of photography Tonino Delli Colli was responsible for the film's sweeping widescreen cinematography, and Ennio Morricone composed the film's score, including its main theme. It was an Italian-led production with co-producers in Spain, West Germany, and the United States. Most of the filming took place in Spain. The film is known for Leone's use of long shots and close-up cinematography, as well as his distinctive use of violence, tension, and highly stylized gunfights. The plot revolves around three gunslingers competing to find a fortune in a buried cache of Confederate gold amid the violent chaos of the American Civil War (specifically the Battle of Glorieta Pass of the New Mexico Campaign in 1862) while participating in many battles, confrontations, and duels along the way. The film was the third collaboration between Leone and Clint Eastwood, and the second with Lee Van Cleef.
