Amazing that John grew up in miller place and port Jefferson to my surprise as I Marrie a woman for Brooklin whose parents had a summer home in Sound Beach. I as well fished there with my wife's brother for many summers in the 60s until the mid-80s then my in-laws sold their home on the sound beach and as life goes on I have never returned to Long Island. I still go fishing in NJ and also have a rod building and reel repair retirement business/hobby. I sometimes watch Johns's youtube site and find it interesting. Good fortune to you John.
Much respect for John Skinner. He taught me how to play the game and inspired me to share what we've learned from him to others. You too Halk. We've learned a lot from you and your channel as well. Very privileged to know you both and call you friends.
The north shore is such an impossible place to fish if you don’t live there. I used to go to a Jetty in Glen cove where my friend lived and one of her neighbors came out and questioned what I was doing there. They said if her mom wasn’t with me I had to leave or they would call the cops. I was like “you want a 70 year old woman to come on these rocks with me or you’re going to call the cops?” He said yes. Last time I ever fished there. Like Skinner I am now in FL and will never move back to NY. I do miss fluke and gator blue fishing. Watched skinners videos ever since he started his channel. Used to buy a case of beer and go to my friends place and we would just re watch his videos. Guy is a NY legend.
Nice chat with Mr. Skinner. John has been a mentor to me since we fished the same Long Island waters for many years. I retired to Fort Myers 10 years ago and much to my pleasant surprise discovered his videos from SW Florida. I once again benefit from his knowledge of our mutual fishing waters. I hope you do a follow up interview. It would be interesting to know how John decided to winter here in SWFL. Thanks for the video and Thank You Mr. Skinner for sharing all you do.
How is it John, that our life’s stories sound like we grew up in the same family, in the same place, at the same time, our tracks crossed so many times and we never fished together. We’ll actually we did a few times at the same time i.e. Wading River, Moriches Inlet. Someday it would be great to sit down and relive and trade stories of our youth and compare notes. There isn’t enough oxygen and time to go through it all but I guarantee there is a lot of shared history, laughs and familiar faces to go along with those stories. We’re cut from the same cloth and think like twins! Thanks for your continuing efforts in educating and entertaining your viewers!
Legend. I don't even get to catch Fluke down here but I watched every video he posted! Reached out to him about a colab in SWFL and he responded with class and respect. Mad props and respect to John Skinner! Class act.
Thank You, John Skinner for all the fishing Education and Entertainment!!! I watch both of your channels all the time. Can’t wait to start fishing again this Spring.
I’m one of those who learned much of what I know fluke fishing from Skinner. While I appreciate the compliment, anything anyone learned from me is me just passing along the Skinner method
Really neither of you thought to use spot lock after the first drift into the shore. Great video. John Skinner has enriched my life so much. I don´t I could ever let him know. Side note: Your buddy broke his favorite fishing rod tip. Not your fault. He should have let some line out.
That was pretty cool. Humble dude. You could tell it was 2 Yankees though; skinner was constantly getting interrupted but never slowed down, just kept on talking!🤣
First time I heard of John's personal life. I knew he had a scientific mind just from watching his videos. They LEGEND really knows how to drill down to the basics that work. THANKS JOHN and thanks to jigging jerks.
Well done.. nothing better than a good fishing story or a dozen.. we all remember the crazy 70s and 80s.. blackjacks, squitegue, 50+ lb cod, and all the skipjacks we kept.. and still new memories are being made everyday.. thanks for the insight into John’s past.. well done
I knew who he was when I was growing up fishing in Jersey and I'm not old but I'm getting there. Skinner is a LI legend like Shawn Kimbro is a legend in the Cheasepeke bay down here
Wow, great story John Skinner! How similar are the roots where our collective love and respect of salt water sports fishing started...hope to see you out there! Thanks again for sharing your wonderful insights to this craft! You are a Long Island treasure!
Thanks for sharing with us. Gives some insight into the master, Skinner. John has taken teaching and fishing to a whole a new generation in the age of the internet/social media. At my age, most everything I've learned so far has been through books, magazines and experiences, whereas some kids these days would never pick up a book but are still getting knowledge on line. John's videos and yours are more than entertainment, they are knowledge. Thank you both for that.
i cant say enough about this guy..he proves time and time again fishing does need to be and is not complicated..his simplicity of how he fishes makes a level playing field for everyone..i am the fluke fisherman today without a doubt because of skinner..his videos just made it so easy and the numbers of fluke ive caught ever since his videos blows my mind...he made gulp a household name everywhere...you wont go anyplace where theres fluke and not see the use of bucktails and gulp..berkley should bow to him like royalty and i would hope this guy never has to pay a cent from his pocket for any gulp prodcuts. this video should be an hour long and halk,,you are a lucky man having him to fish and learn from
LongIsland, NY was blessed with a few influential fisherman. Bill "Doc" Muller, Fred Garofalo & John Skinner to mention a few. all 3 are a wealth of information. i've sat in their seminars when ever i had the opportunity. Skinner used to patronize the same shop as i did, Rocky Point Fishing Stop. had the opportunity to talk with him one several occasions. and i fished some of the same North Shore beaches as he did.
Another excellent video! Thank you so much. How cool to learn that my current fishing grounds are the ones John grew up fishing. You two are Long Island legends. Spring is on its way! Gonna find some spring togs this year! Great stuff my friend!Keep spreading dat AaaLoHaa! 🤙

Great video John! I’ve been watching Skinner videos from the beginning and have learned a lot from both of you guys over the years. Hoping this year we can meet up when we shoot across the Pond. Keep up the great videos! Tight lines all
Thanks John...what a fantastic video. After reading A Season on the Edge I was hooked immediately. I have all his books and watch both of you guy's videos. I'm 68 and been fishing the Jersey Shore all my life. I wish I had this knowledge back in the day that I have now because of you guys. At least once a week I get something delivered from J & H Tackle. It gets me through the 6 month, grey NW Jersey winter. Thanks again for all you guys do.
Thank God for John and you for posting these videos! I have learned so much. Of course just in time to sell my last boat (yes I am single and had 3) and look forward to going on 6 pack charters from here on out. I would rather spend 5K on charters that put you on fish each year than keep a boat. Granted I miss all my boats but I made the move. Its so interesting learning both your backgrounds.
Absolutely interesting. This man is know over the whole coast for this fishing that we all love. It’s paramount we have some detail and information on who skinner is.
Very interesting video John. Nice to learn about how Skinner got started. I can relate to growing up fishing like that. We lived on a canal in Amityville, L.I. and fished the Great South Bay. I now fish L.I. Sound as I live in CT. Nothing beats a good, or bad, day of fishing! 👍👍😉😉
Often wondered what your educational background and what your career was before the angling kicked in. Your bucktailing made me a better fluke angler. Your writings are as enjoyable as the videos. Thanks.
Great video as I have always wondered about Johns background. I will tell you that I took up saltwater fishing pretty heavily in the last couple years. I was always an avid freshwater fisherman until Covid came around ( a long story) but I am 2 blocks from the beach and across from your north shore. When I was searching for info on you tube I came across Skinners channel and still seek his professional skills of educating me as a fisherman. Thanks to his videos I feel I have done pretty well....Tight lines.
I love Skinner. Funny thing is I DO NOT LIKE FLOUNDER fishing. Or stripers really for that matter. I like how he explains everything as he's doing it. I did 1 flounder drift this season. I used to do it allot with my dad. He was a past commodore of the BHMTC and passed away a few years ago. So every year I'll fish for flounder as close to his birthday as possible. He was strictly a killie/squid combo. I use the Skinner technique. So this year after doing some bridge sheepshead behind AC I rigged up a gulp bucktail. Less then a minute later I had a 5lber. And 30 boats next to me 😆🤣😂. This year I may focus more on back bay when I can't run my starcraft out for tuna and sharks.
RE: Weakfish. Bought my first boat in 1980, kept it in Great Kills Staten Island. We would catch huge 10lb plus weakfish right outside the harbor while live lining bunker. I thought that it was normal and it would last forever. In 3 seasons they were gone, never to return.
Thanks for thus content. I've learned so much from you and John I wish I could pick John's brain more concerning his time fishing the 16' Lund in Rochester NY. I live just south of there and want to learn about small boat opportunities on the Lake Ontario
Great video. Reminded me of growing up learning how to fish from the old timers on the beach. Like John said when a kid could go down to the beach alone. Before technology where you learned from trial and error and others. Or just by reading magazines and articles. I remember when gulp first came out and I started catching with it so many of my buddy’s where like that just catches sea robins. Only took a trip or two to convert them lol.
