  • A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1993 edutainment title for the Super Nintendo, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
To capture Carmen, you must successfully solve 29 crimes committed by her henchmen before you cross paths with the fashion-savvy criminal mastermind herself.
And if you're tempted to run screaming because of the Hi Tech logo at the beginning, you'll probably be relieved to find out that this was actually programmed by Electronic Arts. You know, back from when EA was known for really good games? And back when every one of their games used the exact same font?
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? on the SNES is an impressively close adaptation of the updated VGA PC version, retaining the digitized photos of famous landmarks, the simple and easy-to-use interface, and all of the classic music and sound effects. I still love the noise of the footsteps and the whistle when you find the bad guy.
And the map screen's airplane noise - am I the only one that always expect to hear the Vs. music from Street Fighter II directly after? And am I the only one to think it's a bit odd that a reference librarian and a sailor's parrot can inform us about local gang activity?
I played this all the time in school - it was one of my favorites, along with Oregon Trail and Odell Lake, to play when we'd have computer lab. This looks much better than the black and green Apple II ever did though!
Carmen Sandiego was always one of the few games that were actually fun while being legitimately educational, and it's still fun to muck around with now, even though some of the information is hopelessly outdated. If only more educational games were as effective as this one, imagine how much more we might've learned back in elementary school!

It's amazing just how much of a phenomenon Carmen Sandiego became in the late 80s, and this SNES port does an excellent job of recapturing some of that elementary school computer lab magic.

My oldest son used to watch that show on PBS affiliate WKLE (KET: Kentucky Educational Television) in Lexington when he was 7-12!

Yep, this game was indeed a staple of our elementary school's computer lab. But the game always seemed to crash when I reached Inspector rank. Loved playing this and "Where in the USA?". Also fondly remember the PBS show with such great villains as Bertha Brute and Patty Larceny.

I was wondering if the SNES Carmen Sandiego also comes with an encyclopedia, like most Carmen Sandiego games.

I remember watching this show on Saturday mornings in the mid 1990s eating a bowl of cereal. Yeah typical 90s kid. Born in 1987. I wouldn’t mind revisiting my childhood every now and then.

I totally agree, this franchise is long overdue for an update. And now that the game has been officially inducted in The World Video Game Hall of Fame this would be a great time to start working on one.

Ooh, I have this version, and I love it! Everyone's favorite globetrotting thief with superhuman strength is on the loose again! ...We wouldn't have an interesting edutainment adventure if she wasn't. But when it comes to logic-based detective simulators, this is obviously one of the most famous and important across all platforms back in the day.
...You probably wonder why I say Carmen has superhuman strength? Well, not just anyone can lift and carry several monuments around like that. She puts Shredder and Krang from Turtles in Time to shame. Steal the Statue of Liberty? That's just Tuesday for Carmen Sandiego.

Just as Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? was a re-hased SNES game, so too is this game. It has essentially no changes from the NES version. It was originally available for the Commodore 64.
