The BBC's Peter Jones signing off from his last report at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989.
It is truly an incredible piece of broadcasting. Respectful, poignant, descriptive, words that stay in the memory, a wonderful voice. And the sun shines now...
And the sun shines now…just poetic, heartbreaking, beautiful and iconic…JFT97 never forgotten….
absolutely chilling listening to this
The finest broadcast by the finest broadcaster. Listening at home live whilst I was supposed to be revising for my A Levels, I can remember the exact page of a history textbook that I opened at 3pm and never turned over, and it’s true to say that Peter’s summing up broke my personal dam, and the tears fell, and every time I come here to listen again they flow once more.
Without any doubt in my mind anyhow The greatest football commentator on british radio , he painted pictures with his voice , never need a sidekick to talk to did all the work himself , treasured memories
Its 7.52am weds 28/4 /21 I sit in my van waiting to attend my first job of the day , once again I listen to those words of Mr Jones just as I did all those years ago . Any troubles or woes I think I may have in my life are soon put in to perspective .
@@Blah67 living in Ireland we were watching it live on TV. What a terrible disaster and brilliantly described by the greatest commentator of them all Peter Jones. Peter never got over the events of Hillsborough died less than a year later
There are so many layers to this. Firstly, there are so many people with blood on their hands that will never be brought to justice. That includes many (and they know who they are) that will never be implicated in this tragedy plus many others that will probably never see justice. There is not a football fan, nor a human being alive that can fail to have been affected by Hillsborough. This piece of poetry from the greatest commentator on the planet was a fitting tribute, not only to the 96 at Hillsborough and the 56 at Bradford but to the great man himself. God bless you Peter Jones
Interesting that you didn't bother remembering Heysal, where it was those loveable rogues from Liverpool who had blood on their hands.
@@nottmjas plenty of those “lovable rogues” had blood on their hands at Hillsborough too. It was those that I was referring to at the start of the comment.
You can hear the tremble in his voice! I admire him for managing to hold it together in such tragic circumstances. What hurts is a disaster like this could have been avoided! Justice for the 96!
THE greatest football commentator...
James Trevelyan peter jones...what a voice james
You are so right.
Without doubt. I lived Forest's glory years through his voice and stood on the spion kop at Hillsborough 30 years ago to the day.
@@johnroycroft5653 great times great commentator
Yes indeed... The Greatest of his century.. Such a lovely voice dead but he still lives in the living.. He came back as the now Peter Drury...
I believe he was never the same again after commentating on this R.I.P to all😥
This is the first place I've heard it in its entirety, and the extra context gives it extra meaning. Superb bit of broadcasting, summing up exactly the mood, and the tone, and the feeling that that afternoon must have brought.
Superb professional .This haunted Peter Jones until his early death at 60.Haunting yet beautiful in its tragedy
This is an emotional day for us. We'll never forget you poor souls. We wish you were with us today. YNWA. God bless.
The most beautiful words
Shivers, absolute shivers.
I was listening to a Peter Drury interview in Tifo and he mentioned this as the highest bar in broadcasting sport ever and he was not wrong. JFT97.
I remember watching Grandstand and Bob Wilson going to Hillsborough on that incredibly sad day. I was only 10 at the time so never heard of Peter Jones until my brother had a audio cassette of the 1979 Fa Cup final between Arsenal & Manchester United. John Rawling described Peter’s commentary.
"Peter was an old school charmer and an inspirational colleague for all aspiring broadcasters such as I was when I joined BBC Radio Sport in 1984. In my opinion, nobody before or since has ever broadcast with greater descriptive brilliance that Peter did on the day of the Hillsborough disaster. He was absolutely exceptional, and is still missed 20 years after his death."
It’s very sad to hear that Peter died almost a year after the disaster as he was deeply affected by it. RIP to him and all the Hillsborough victims. You’ll never walk alone.
'I do not believe it. I swear I do not believe it.' Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. I remember in the 70s watching the cup final on TV and recording the audio commentary which I listed to later. 79 was a classic.
Well said mate
Being at Hillsborough really affected Peter Jones. His widow said he had nightmares about the events of that day for the all too brief rest of his life. Peter sadly died less than a year later. Whilst commentating on the Boat Race, Peter had a fatal heart attack.
Peter jones was a superstar !
Justice at last. YNWA.
The GOAT of commentary. And the sun shines now..
Bless you Peter, and bless all the victims
Powerful words!
He never really got over this event, and died just before the first anniversary...
OMG really? Aww. RIP
And the sun shines 😢
😥
Poignant
Peter jones along with Alan Green were probably the greatest radio commentators of all time .may they rest in peace .YNWA
HEYSEL NEVER FORGOTTEN JFT39
Obviously unaware that there was justice after Heysel, custodial sentences were given to those found guilty in the ground. Local organisers and Belgium government officials were also subject to justice. UEFA were not
