I came from a family of eight children. We went through several Volkswagen buses in the 1960's. You bring back a lot of memories.

That's where all the VW buses went to! And outside of Germany in the late 60's/early 70's, not sure if there has been a larger collection of VW steel like that in a while. Nice drive, and I fall in love in love with Crusty more and more time spent in it ;)

Love those old VW buses and trucks. So many things look so familiar even 50 or 60 years later! A VW bus was the first vehicle I wanted to own, and I've never owned one! The restored ones are getting way out of my price range now.

I love this video. I had a '63 VW van That I had rebuilt the eng. I put 83 mm, or was it 85 mm jugs, an SCR electronic ignition and changed to higher gearing on the back end. It gave me 27 mpg. after that as well as the ability to climb San Diego State university hill at 75 mph. Before it was doing good to give 40 mph on that sane hill. I put an old rebuilt Ford pinto carb. 2 barrel 2 stage progressive linkage. I had to swap out the primary and secondary jets. Here's the thing: swapping out those jets was not a thing, which had to be done all the time. It was just something I had to do, and man that V Dub could run. I love that old van.

This older gentleman I know has a beetle and loves the air-cooled scene. he has had a number if surgeries so he has a real hard time working on his own car. He decided to start up his own business rebuilding Volkswagen speedometers and selling them. Even junk ones he usually uses parts out of. He lives in Georgia, if you ever need a speedometer or happen to have a bunch you don't want, I can get you guys in touch.

Oh the nostalgia...I drove a bug and then a van for many a year back in the day. Sure wish I still had one but fun to see that some people still do and that they know how to work on them.
I may be a luddite but I would rather have a VW van than a modern car that is connected to the internet and talks to you.

A couple of thoughts. at the end of the video I thought I saw the air
cleaner assembly with a pool of oil around it as though the engine is
experiencing excessive blowby throwing oil up in the air cleaner. of
course that would only count if the PCV system takes clean air from the
    air cleaner assembly.
2nd thought: . electric fuel pumps. sure saves a great deal of cranking
when the carbs are dry. great for winter operation when there is
    little battery reserve available
3rd thought: personally, I remove the batteries from vehicles that are
not going to be driven a while. put them all on my battery shelf and
cycle a battery maintainer from battery to battery on a weekly basis (
monthly will do to ) . just to make sure they don't sulfide up and are
ready to go when I need them.
Just a series of thoughts from an old over the hill country boy. jack
of all trades, master of none except for running my mouth off.
ps. . I am now addicted to your videos. well done.

@Mustie1. I really like the look of a bus that still has good original paint, where it shows it's age. My 70 campmobile was painted a 2 tone brown & beige color that makes it look like a Twinkie. If I were to sand it down, would the original red paint be there? I can see it in a few areas peeking through.
