  • In this Video You Will Find Out, Who is Vito Corleone? & our New mini-series uncovering Who The Real Godfather is?
One of, if not the most iconic character in Cinema history, was the notorious mafia boss, Don Vito Corleone. From without exaggerating the greatest film in history, the godfather. Based on the incredible novel by Mario Puzo, this character and story was brought to life by one of the greatest directors of all time, the one and only Francis Ford Coppola. There are so many stories, intricate facts and details that surround this iconic film, in which we cover on this channel. But what we wanted to focus on in this video. Is particularly the character Don Vito Corleone. Once again, played by one the greatest actors of all time, Marlon Brando.
With the help of Mario Puzo, Francis Coppola and of course Marlon Brando, they were able to bring this character to life, and against all odds, have an enormous impact not just on cinema and story telling, onto real life.
The character of Vito Corleone, had such an impact that, the real life mobsters and gangsters, all wanted to imitate or were inspired to carry themselves similar to how Vito Corleone did. They were in awe of Vito, from how he commanded respect to his ability to read and play people to his advantage.
Whats interesting is that the character of Vito although mostly fictional, was actually inspired by real life mobsters. He shares many similarities with these legendary mobsters. For example Brando imitated the voice of Frank Costello, his story and rise was inspired by a combination of Lucky Luciano, Carlo Gambino, Joe Bonanno, just to name a few.
But a question that we constantly receive, is who is the real godfather? Not in terms of the character per se, but the idea of there being a single most powerful and influential mafia don of all time. And thats what we’ll uncover in this mini series. If there is this real life equivalent who is it really? Not just who we all consider as the godfather, But who for certain is this character? You all have been asking for something definitive. That’s exactly what we will give you. Firstly if such an individual existed, And if this individual was as powerful, honourable and brilliant as Vito? Or is this idea of the noble outlaw just completely false? Let's find out 🔥

In my opinion, the closest real life equivalent was Carlo Gambino. Considering how he migrated to America at a similar age, rose to build an empire from nothing, consolidated the five New York families, acted as Boss of the Bosses (Capo de tu Cappi), never spent a day behind bars, and died peacefully from a heart attack (although Carlo actually died AFTER The Godfather came out).

I think by its very nature, the position of boss of bosses(aka the Godfather) would change hands often. Death, prison, old age...all these things and more could end someone's run at the top. I know Meyer Lansky would be the real life version of Hyman Roth, but Vito's real life version could be various people. I would pick Gambino as the closest match to Vito, although there are others who share similar traits. The main problem is that Vito Corleone's character shares traits with the older real life 'mustache petes' as well as the next generation gangsters like Luciano. Depending on which trait you focus on the best match will change.

Good attempt at a timeline. However the book timeline and the movie timeline don’t jive. I blame Puzo for this as he worked on both. In the book Vito is 12 when his parents are killed and he is sent to the US. In the movie he is only 9. One says he was born in 1887 and the other 1891. He marries at 18 and Sonny is born 2 years later. Michael joins the marines in December 1941 but his age isn’t given. He is wounded and released in 1944, not 1945 as the movie implies. He had to be at least 18 in 41 but the movie implies he is 21, born in 1920. Sonny is several years older than Michael because he fought in the Pacification of New York or the Olive Oil War in the 1930s but Michael was “too young to remember.” Sonny was either born in 1907 or 1911 when Vito was 20. Michael sometime between 1920-1923, making Sonny 9-16 years older. If the first war was 1933-35 (it’s been 10 years since the last one) Michael would be from 10-15, old enough to remember.
I could go on, but the point is Puzo has the timeline so screwed up it is almost impossible to make a coherent timeline of all their ages and events.

The best leaders in the criminal organization have some type of strength, tactics, charisma, manipulation, word play, level headed, viciousness, and compassion all wrapped up in 1. Even El Chapo has these qualities and he's the shortest guy out in Mexico. Hitler had most of these but his anger clouded his judgment which was his down fall, and he didn't believe in Christianity which didn't helped him neither.
Don Vito did, you can see him pay respect to the Catholic Church and had some type of believe in God and didn't go radical like the other Dons. The meetings he created/commissions are also in the bible. Resolving problems with other people witnessing. Even though it's a contradiction and double moral Vito kept it light and used violence when he had to. He respected the working class because he worked as well coming up and knew it wasn't easy. The bible also says that God helps the workers so... That's why he said he was a superstitious man, because of his believe.
His believe in God also had to do with not getting into drugs. He might have seen how crazy and foul drugs made people and wouldn't help the 5 families think rational. It would be dangerous, because they all have guns. People didn't have T.V.'s back then but they had more knowledge of the bible and they passed that around. That's probably the only reason Vito survived the street shooting. Because he had more of a connection with God.
After that the Corleone family wanted to avoid the drugs and went in the casinos in Vegas. Which was smart because after the drugs hit nothing was the same and turned for the worst in new York.

There was no "godfather" in the sense of an all-powerful boss. Even in the movie the "godfather", he is just one member of the commission.
The character in the first movie is largely based on Frank Costello. Barzini is Vito Genovise. luca brasi is Albert Anastasia. But there was no "family" like the one in the film and sonny/michael/frado etc were all inspired by different people and stories.
The general narrative of Vito being approached for the drug deal, him turning it down, him getting shot and then retiring is close to the story of Frank Costello. But after that point in the movie, it all becomes fictional nonsense.
In the real story, the godfather gets his revenge by setting up "Barzini" for a federal drug arrest. Then he retires, hands over power to Carlo Gambino and takes up gardening.
Joseph Bonanno plotted to kill most of the other members of the commission in the early 1960s (like Micahel) but didn't follow through on the plan.

Vito wasn’t too far off about drugs. According to Michael Franzese (retired Columbo capo) “if you did drugs, you died” and there are examples of made men and associates going down for drug involvement. I can’t say why as my only source is not 100 percent credible, but I believe it’s because of the attention it grabs from the police.

Was Vito Corleone born in 1887? I think he was 9 year old during the 1901 opening scene of GF2. If he was born in. 1892 then he was only in his early 50s in the 1945 scenes but he looked so old. This thing has puzzled me for years since I first watched this film.

First movie says 1887, the second says 1891. That is backed up by his turning 50 on Dec. 7, 1941, the day of the Pearl Harbor bombing. Makes a little more sense than 1887 considering the Corleone children's ages as well.

The date of Vito's birth isn't the only way GF2 contradicts GF1's timeline.
When discussing how to deal with Sollozzo, Tom says it's "almost 1946" in GF1, but in GF2, it was said that Sollozzo was killed in 1947. I doubt if the Corleones waited a whole year for Michael to kill the "Turk."
In GF1, Vito died in 1955. Shortly after, Michael ordered the killings of the other 4 family heads. In GF2, at the senate hearing, it was said that the killings happened in 1950, which would have been impossible. In 1958 (GF2), Kay reminds Michael that seven years had passed since he promised her that the Corleone family would be completely legitimate in five years.
He told her that at least 3 years before his father died and he "settled all family business" by killing the rival family heads.

      @radicalross7700 3 роки тому

True, but my point was that the killings of the 4 rival family heads couldn't have happened in 1950.
Before that happened Michael and Kay reconnected, got married, and two kids. Their son Anthony was 3 years old when Vito died. Right afterwards, Michael "settled all family business."
All that couldn't have happened in 1949 and 1950 as GF2 says.
Maybe it's the senators at the hearing who got the dates wrong.

IT DOESN'T MATTER, cuz Don Vito Corleone is a larger than life character, an IDEAL Persona. In real life men or women for that matter may try to emulate him but probably can't perfect his total style cuz the world is how it is. Imo, the only way the actual Don Vito's of this world can succeed is if they get together, and resist the tendency to form corporations which ignore all externalities and fragment rather than solidify diverse business. Don Vito would not accept business deals with men who put money over people, and if he did, he would make them an offer they couldn't refuse, like Don Roberto with the relatively minor matter of being neighborly with an old woman who was being evicted. However, Don Vito recognizes that if a person who has power in the neighborhood will abuse an old woman they will abuse anyone, so when Don Vito agreed to the $5 extra that Don Roberto wanted, he said, in THAT case, the dog stays. Don Roberto gets indignant, says some s*** publicly he really shouldn't have said, so Don Vito says, I didn't come here to fight with you, ask your friends in the neighborhood, they'll tell you I know how to repay a favor. WHEN he does, his friends undoubtedly say, "get over there RIGHT NOW and give him his money back, and tell him that the old woman can stay. WITH THE DOG without the dog, you just have to make clear to him that MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING to you. Might seem trivial to us but people have died for doing less than crossing Don Vito about something like this, AND OFFER OTHER CONCESSIONS, that is if you want to be in this man's good graces, and believe me you do"

This is not often mentioned and long forgotten, but if you really want to look for an equivalent of who was the OG boss, it was Peter "clutch hand" Morello.
First of all, he was already a ranking mafioso from corleone, then he actually set up and founded the black hand and prototype mafia for in the 1900's. He was known as the boss of all bosses back then. The whole mustach pete term was named after him and he was later the consigliere to joe the boss masimo who luck luciano took out, along with morello to found the modern five families. The morello family became the genovese family so Pete is the true OG.

Vito Andolini, whose father had disrespected Don Ciccio, who had Mr Andolini killed, as well as his older brother, who swore revenge for his father’s death!! Vito’s mother asked for Corleone boss Don Ciccio, who had already had killed her husband and his son. She wants to ask Don Ciccio to please let her only child, , Vito who’s a quiet boy, and slow in the head. Don Ciccio who’s old as dirt and don’t think that he’s going to be able allow the dimwitted Vito to live because he will grow up and then become strong and he just may come back for the revenge of the death’s of his family members, father, mother, and older brother! Do realizing that Ciccio was set on killing her and Vito she had no choice but to pull out her butcher’s knife and holding it at Don Ciccio’s throat she tells her only child, Vito to run away which he does but he witnessed the death of his mother by lupara. After which the angered Ciccio demands that Vito is killed and as he is smuggled out of the village and onto an American bound steam-ship and away from certain death by Don Ciccio!! He begins his life with small- pox and he is quarantined for 3 months!!! An amazing character who developed into the influential, and capable of taking care of business and his personal life and family!

In The Godfather universe, did the concept of becoming a ‘made man’ exist? Did they have to get initiated and take the oath of Omertà? If so, when did Michael get made? I read somewhere that Michael was made in Sicily when he was exile but I don’t know if that’s per Puzo or just fan commentary…

  • @mateocalderon6822
    @mateocalderon6822 2 роки тому

It's a mix of Joe bonnano, coming to america from Sicily and becoming boss of his family at a young age and grooming his son to become boss. He was also considered to be the old gaurd and was being pushed out by the newer less traditional bosses, also frank costello with the voice, political connections and assassination attempt. Joe profaci owned an olive oil company but I think that's the only comparison. I don't think carlo gambino because he was one of the newer less traditional bosses that was plotting against the older Sicilian bosses because he wanted to sell drugs (with the backing of Vito genovese and Tommy luchesse)

Vito is emotionally disgraced by his adult sons. That's why I don't like older Vito. Younger Vito is a more caring father.
Over the years, he becomes ruder and ruder to his 3 sons. Sony is a whacker - good right-hand. Fredo is too sensitive black sheep. Michael is the only one smart enough to be a Don. Although Michael didn't want to be a Don. Sony and Fredo wanted. Vito is a quality for Sony's liquidation and Fredo's betrayal.
