Oh Susan I dream about seed catalog day. Beautiful photographs of lush plants growing in deep dark soil. It's like a fairy "tail" tale. I live in the "cement capital" of Texas. 1/4 inch of top soil then rock forever. Raised beds are a must. Adding yards of soil each growing season. That is my first order. Planting early is a must. Who knew moving 125 miles west from East Texas with its thick sandy loam soil and rainy summer showers. Now back to the real world. tomatoes, peppers, early lettuce, beets, radishes and greens. Strong fencing and shade cloth. Take care Susan always love your videos. Have a great week.
Thank you for being the best source of all things gardening! I look forward to your posts both here on UA-cam and other social media as well! Happy gardening!!
New to your channel. Love all the excellent info, thanks! I LOVE you for shouting out the local garden centers. Go Susan. That is so important and I def do both. Love your spreadsheet action, too. My friend and I do that for the shows/concerts we go to, LOL! I should def do this for my seed obsession and addiction. ALSO! Did not realize that pelleted seeds don't have that long of a shelf life. Thanks for that important tip! Holiday greetings from Jersery!
My local garden center carries Botanical Interest Seeds, which I love. I also found out that the local ACE Hardware carries Botanical Interest Seeds and at the end of the summer, they will discount the seeds of that year, by 50%. I can swoop in and buy all kinds of new to me varieties and try them without shipping and handling costs
Wow! You definitely pinpointed my dilemma Exactly-Shipping!! I was recently trying to find a company that offered all the seeds I was looking for-(Long Sigh)-Not a One covered all of what I need. I have Many seeds and only need a few particular varieties of veg and flowers. Worst to best shipping: By dollar amount of order, meeting a max amount on order for free shipping, flats rates can be reasonable and free shipping. I mean, they are only seeds and they aren’t shipping them across the pond 😵💫. So without a nice chart like you have I have several sites open and trying to search and compromise to see if I can order from Just One place-Impossible. I mean if I add $7.50 shipping to a $5-6 seed pkt-THATS CRAZY! I don’t need anymore tools or that many seeds so I could never meet that free shipping level. I have a serious amount of seeds already, but I’m zeroing in on those varieties that do well. Speaking of messing with genetics-I am not adverse to hybrids or non organic, but do find it troubling to see flowers that don’t produce seed. For that reason I need to consider finding more right varieties that are OP for my garden with short maturity dates. I’ve noticed price increases as well this year and need to start safeguarding all around, be it genetics or cost. I do get on email lists of companies I do bz with and it helps if you read your emails daily 🧐😉 as some offers are only for A Day. So I guess if I want to try Lisianthis flowers I will need to make a decision soon of what shipping charge I feel is worthy. The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener website has discount codes for many companies and one is for Jung Seeds. Just look under their Money tab to get the current code for 10% off! It sure does help with shipping 👏🏼👏🏼 Great timing on this subject-thank you.
Yes, I don't agree with the pollen-free flowers, esp. sunflowers. I know it's primarily done for the cut flower trade (and gardeners) but I steer clear of them. Take care.
A question about days to maturity…..you mentioned it’s the days between planting a seed or a seedling into the ground….. Why doesn’t the countdown start when the seed is placed in soil whether it’s inside in a starter tray or outside in the ground? If I procrastinated planting a seedling outdoors, I thought those days would count. 🤷🏼♀ Thank you for always sharing such helpful information.
Hi, Kim. That is a great question. I used to think the same thing until I learned otherwise quite a few years ago. Here's why: if you start a plant indoors (which I primarily do for almost everything) and then transplant it out into the garden, the seedling takes a while to adjust to the new conditions. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but that's the case. Starting seeds indoors is a must for getting plants going, esp. plants that need a long time to grow like tomatoes and winter squash, but they still have to settle in a bit before they continue growing. And thank you for your nice comment!
I would add MIGardener - they aren't certified organic but they use organic practices (the certification is expensive) and are all heirloom seeds. $2.00 a package - online only to save costs. Free shipping of seeds over $20
Thanks for sharing that! I have heard of him but haven't checked out the seeds he offers. I mainly focused on the catalogs we've received so far but will definitely take a look. I appreciate the recommendation. Happy holidays!

I grew the gmo purple cherry tomato last year. They were quite sweet with not a lot of acid and were very nice for snacking. Because they are purple all the way through they make a nice presentation when fresh. Purple spaghetti sauce however, was not a good look in my opinion.
THANK YOU SUSAN! I need your help! When I brought in my plants for the winter, I brought in aphids! Now I have an infestation of aphids! Uggg.... Been battling them and I am losing! I am afraid to start my seeds indoors in the coming months. What can I do? Please help!
Hi, Tina. That's so frustrating. I always recommend that folks inspect their plants before bringing them inside to see if there are insects present, or hose off the plants when they bring them indoors for the winter. But there are a couple of things you could do. One is (if it's feasible) to put your plants in the shower and "hose" them off that way. Or you could buy either insecticidal soap that is labeled to control aphids or Neem oil from a garden center. It is really important that you follow the label directions. Good luck!

Now that would be a site to see. Need to inform my friends in Louisiana that is one of their favorite colors.
Yeah, I think I'd have to warm up to that idea as well!
