My mother would fry bacon first. She would then cut thick slices of ripe tomato and dredge them in seasoned flour. She fried them in the bacon grease, being very careful when turning them over. A couple slices would always break up and she would use those for the base of the gravy. She would add some butter to the pam and a few tablespoons of the seasoned flour and brown that with the broken tomato slices. She would then add milk until it was a thin gravy. She served the fried tomatoes and gravy with scrambled eggs, bacon and biscuits. Heaven.

As an older woman of italian decent/roots, making a huge pot of tomato gravy every sunday was standard fare for us italians. We would start with olive oil on the bottom of the pot, fry meatballs and sausage maybe a piece of pork and then add the
tomato sauce, tomato paste, tomato puree and various seasonings. It would simmer and cook for 4 to 5 hours. It made a scrumptious spaghetti sauce or lasagna or ravioli sauce.

I think maybe our recipes have journeyed through many miles around the world. Some being very similar. 🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿

I didn’t grow up having tomato gravy, I actually never heard of it until I started watching cooking shows…my parents, me & my sister loved tomatoes but I’m thinking mama nor my granny ever had it..mama usually made bacon gravy and we 20:50 ❤would split our biscuits (mama made hers thin too) put butter on them and big slice of tomato to eat with the gravy…sometimes I just cut up my tomato & put gravy over it..but alas my (now) husband (didn’t grow up eating southern) he doesn’t really care for tomatoes…he will eat a BLT & he will eat slice on his burgers…Thanksgiving for sharing this wonderful meal ❤

I was also raised on all kinds of gravy! I don’t think I ever had supper, as a child growing up, that didn’t have homemade biscuits and gravy. My Nanny made the best tomato 🍅 gravy and, just like you, Tipper - I crumbled my biscuits up and put the juicy tomato gravy over them! I didn’t realize how much I missed it until watching you. You brought back all sorts of memories from childhood ♥️🥹. Thank you for doing that ♥️♥️

Years ago when I first started along in my nursing career I was working as a nursing assistant I was probably around 27 years old and this is in Indiana my hometown, I say this only because I lived in Knoxville tn when I was 22 until I came back home and learned a lot from those older southern women thank God for them!! Anyway one of my patients daughter would always bring food in for her mama and it was tomato gravy!! I had never heard of it so when I went home I fixed me some and oh it was so good and I used bacon grease!!❤ thank you for the memories. I’m like you I only buy the little mators or sometimes a couple of roma mators for a salad during the winter but other than that I don’t buy them to eat from the store. Oh the anticipation of watching that first mator turning red in the vine❤

My mom made tomato gravy when I was growing up. She used real butter, and it was so good. Loved it. Still make it sometimes now. Awesome breakfast!

Lived in the Deep South my whole life and I’ve never eaten tomato gravy. It wasn’t something any of my folks ever made, but I want to make some before my tomatoes are all gone. I can make a good biscuit, so I’m gonna try your recipe one day this week.

Tomato gravy is wonderful on white rice in a supper meal. Also with biscuits. I was raised on "mater gravy" my Grandmom made it often ,sometimes using Jared maters she canned in the summer. Comfort meal in the winter ,grits , biscuits and side meat , mater gravy eggs. So yummy. Thanks for sharing your videos and knowledge ❤😊

@@CelebratingAppalachiaI'm 75, raised in the South. Never had tomato gravy. Not a "thang" in my neck of the woods. I'm definitely gonna try making it. My mouth was watering just watching you making it. I've asked my son to order your cookbook for me for Christmas. Love how authentic you all are. Just like family.

@@CelebratingAppalachia Tipper, I live in Burke Co. NC. down I40E between Morganton and Hickory. So many of your Mama's family kin and customs are very similar to how I was raised. I lost my husband to cancer 22 years ago. Watching Matt brings back a lot of memories of him. Wonderful man, husband and father. He was 55 when he passed and I was 52. Close in age to you today. We just had our first grandbaby. I can see how much you treasure each other and your family. I just love granny and all of you. You are a bright spot in my day. God bless you all.
