This score was revised afterwards, but here we have the original version. The music seems to emerge from a mysterious quasi-silence, before the formation of melodic cells. The piano is silent during such moments. It starts playing when some distictive cells have been formed.The orchestra is handlded in a magnificent way. The dialog wit the soloist is rich and interesting. Many contrasts rise, whch compose the music piece by piece. This is quite different form other extatic pieces by Takemitsu, generally based upon synthetic modes which give them a static and extatic tone, and above all avoid concerting contrasts even when there is one (or several) leading instrument(s).
"For Arc I divided the orchestra into four solo instrumental groups. The solo piano assumes the role of an observer strolling through the garden Grass and flowers: a group of undetermined soloistic, rapidly changing mobile forms. These solo parts recur in heterocyclic time relation. Trees: do not change as rapidly as grass and flowers. This group, however, is composed as an indeterminate, gradually changing mobile. Rocks: unchanging except as they appear from different viewpoints. These are written as stable forms in a determinate manner as a type of timbral variations. Sand and earth: enduring and stable, exist unaffected by the total tempo. This is a metagalaxy, a role taken by the percussion."
I guess it is a good recording? I can't tell, because it is full of every reason why I will never buy another vinyl record again as long as I love and will never understand the obsession so many have for the format. To me, they ALL sound like this. Unlistenable, the non-musical scratch and pop dominating the sound and so off of the piece's rhythm. No matter how deeply I and my father took care of the records, they've all got SOMETHING like this, somewhere. I can pin it down the instant it happens. I can't stand it.

Do you know the instrumentation of this original version? I am curious to know whether the orchestra has the electric guitar.
