Good to see you back mate! Something I've always thought would look awesome on a bike would be an arctic kind of effect. Kind of an darker ice blue with a candy/pearl white shimmer effect, or vice versa. Keep up the awesome work. And cheers for introducing me to toughseal :D
Dave, is there a technical reason why you painted the whole tank gold first? I would have thought you'd paint the tank black, then mask and just paint the gold stripe? Less masking doing it your way, right?
Stunningly beautiful... Dave, may I ask: when painting walls I need to paint-in the masking tape with one paint, let it dry and then paint with the other (and strip off the tape before getting dry) in order to get a sharp line w/o bleeding - never mind the tape brand to get it 100%. Why doesn't the black bleed?
That's an outstanding job, and very informative for something I hope to try in the future. Question: Can you do a metallic or flake coat on the first base coat, then mask it and paint a solid color over top? Thanks!
Graphite Gray for yours, matte would be better, least that's my thoughts... It's your bike after all. But as always, informative video, keep em coming :)
Hey brother! Awesome job you done there!! I've got a couple questions for ya. I'm about to paint my street bike and wanted to know if I primer it,do I sand the primer any before I start my base coat? And do I sand after each base coat and after each clear coat? If I do sad after primer and each base coat and clear coat, what grain sandpaper do I use? Oh and by the way,I'm probably using rattle cans to paint it with. Thanks man!
Hey mate, Yes you do sand it after primer. Spray about 4 coats of primer then sand it with 400g wet sand paper and water. Then sand it with 800g wet sand paper and water. clean it and dry it. Then you can spray your paint. You dont need to sand in between coats unless you get a major imperfection. Wait 10 minutes between each coat then after the colour 10 minutes till you can start with the clear. Spray 4 to 5 coats of clear wait 10min between each coat. Let the clear dry for a few days and if you want a better finish you can sand and buff it.
+customspraymods Hahaha!! Usually I ride my bike when I'm down and out! Riding is great therapy! 👍 Lol. But anyhoot,I GREATLY appreciate you taking your time to coach me through the process brother!! I'm a first time painter,so I need all the help I can get! Lol. I'll be popping my "paint cherry" on a 1983 Honda Shadow VT-750. Hope it turns out well. Lol.
Post your results, man. :) The possibilities on a Shadow, are endless.../ I just bought a Shadow... Would like to do some shit to it during the winter.
From my own research, I believe that it is fine to use a standard respirator (meaning a prefilter, particle filter and chemical filter). I actually found one respirator that specifically stated for use with 2k paints. And it's filters were exactly the same spec as any others you'll find. It seems that the real reason most manufacturers won't endorse use with 2k paints is all to do with liability, they're just covering themselves. The problem with respirators is that by the time the filter is used up and you start smelling even a bit of the outside environment, then you're already receiving well over the recommended healthy dose of chemicals. A supplied air mask would never have this problem. So basically you've just got to change your filters regularly and keep a time log. I.E., if a filter has a 12 hour life, I would change it at 10 hours just to be on the safe side. But also keep in mind that working in small or poorly ventilated areas will use up the filter much faster. Gotta stay safe!
Have it a black/red fade mix with a dark red frame. I think it'll look niceee. Or if you're after some ideas, put a few pics up for download and let some photoshop wiz kids do their magic.
That tank is rough as f**k The gold stripe isn’t even consistently even and there are burrs and tape bleed. The problem here is paint one colour on top of another as if you want to rectify and faults, you can’t because it marks the other colour. The correct way is to paint main colour first and lacquer and cure then mask out stripe and paint, this way you can sharpen stripe lines from being fat an thin and clean any tape bleed. Then lacquer. I know what I’m on about I worked for Aston Martin special vehicle operations Doing this day in and day out.
customspraymods i do them all the time using the wide tape, your radiuses are quite large so i dont think youd have a drama.....another way to make sure the stripe doesnt go thick or thin if you must use 3mm tape is to run another piece directly beside the first one.....that way youve got a guide at 6mm plus the next 3mm gets you a 9mm 100% true line....even mix up the available sizes to get to where you want
I know painters use heated booths etc , but I came across a problem, it was too cold I think and tried to make a warm area and it was just a helmet and crappy 1k spray bomb , it's easy to get clouding etc and later on my clears crazed , oh well good lessons for me .
Im trying to paint my tank and it’s my first time doing it.. do you wet sand between the gold and black paint coats? And wet sand before the clear? Thank you for the advice in advance..
Been looking everywhere for a tutorial on painting your mc tank the right way! This is just what I have been looking for, I am planing a pinstripe similar to this one but have bad experience with maskingtape and paint leaking through.. This was a great tutorial, great video! :P
Hi Dave, I'm going to to be spraying my motorcycle fuel tank with aerosol cans i have just stripped the whole tank back to bare metal i have finished filling a small dent and now it's ready to be primed, what type of primer would you recommend? etch?
Yes first use etch primer, then use a filler primer or spray putty. I did a video about repairing a Moto tank using spray cans. It has all your answers.
Maybe I’m too critical but how does one ensure the spacing is correct throughout the entire masking project? Is it just something you “eyeball” and accept? I’m obviously a newbie and I’m trying to get some tips and tricks so feel free to share some knowledge on this topic. Thanks for the video!
Great vid. Glad to see you're back. What are your favorite colors? Should go with something that is appealing to you for your own bike. If you can't decide, you can never go wrong with glossy red and black on a sport bike! Can't wait to see it!
Hey man! Looks great! With the style of bike you have I'd go with a solid color. Pearl White looks good on everything, and has the added bonus of being very fixable.
Hey dave good to see u back. Y such a long pause. U r a treat to watch n ur work us awesome. Looking frwd fr more uploads in the future. Mate u just dont knw hw many ppl u inspire....thanks
Just one question, if the gold is just for the pinstripe why do you paint entire tank? Wouldnt it be chepaer to paintonly the stripe area, or even before black and the mask the line for the gold?
Welcome back Dave!! id like to see some matte finished paint work, preferably grey
Great to hear 'Cold Chisel' playing in the background! @ 2.30
Good to see you back mate!

YesUCan what I was going to say, seems a big waste of paint
I was looking for some info on preparing a tank that is not perfect, but really nice job on this!
Stunningly beautiful... Dave, may I ask: when painting walls I need to paint-in the masking tape with one paint, let it dry and then paint with the other (and strip off the tape before getting dry) in order to get a sharp line w/o bleeding - never mind the tape brand to get it 100%. If the main color is black why do you paint gold all the tank? Thanks. It is a great video
Dave is bad ass awesome with the spray mods !
Ichiban Moto when do you paint The cafe a bad ass awesome paint job?
nice job. it came out a treat.
That's an outstanding job, and very informative for something I hope to try in the future. Question: Can you do a metallic or flake coat on the first base coat, then mask it and paint a solid color over top? Thanks!
nice. can you get decent results with a spray can too? with a can i never get such a wide fan, so i often get tiger stripes.
Do you have a problem with the paint should one be unlucky enough to get fuel splashes etc at gas stations?
Hey I'm a big fan I'm 15 years old an very passionate about this could you post a video on how to start painting cars.
I would love to see you do an Outter space tank job.
dave what kind of paint you use for motorcycle tank urethane or enamel
+Christian Vasquez X1
Pearl blue would be nice for the bike tank
Great video!
Graphite Gray for yours, matte would be better, least that's my thoughts... It's your bike after all. But as always, informative video, keep em coming :)
why do you paint the pinstripe 1st and then mask it over. Wouldnt it be easier to paint all black then do the pinstripes over the black?
I've seen the process he used in the video on every other painting video I've watched. I guess it's just the right way
There is less masking work that needs to be done I guess
Good job
great job, do you still wet sand between coats? (or color change)
EnVision no not between coats.
hi mate, how long did you wait after the black was on before your clear coated?
10 minutes
Thank u that was so good
Hey brother! Awesome job you done there!! I've got a couple questions for ya. I'm about to paint my street bike and wanted to know if I primer it,do I sand the primer any before I start my base coat? If your sad after the primer then go for a walk and clear your head maybe watch some fail videos. Haa

We're thay 2k paints you used and if thay were can you use a standard resperater

I think a gunmetal grey would be cool
Have it a black/red fade mix with a dark red frame. I think it'll look niceee.

did you already paint your tank? cause I'd say sunburst
Hey Knucklehead, I keep coming back to your videos, so what choice do I have but to subscribe ;- )

dude you done the stripe the hard way! wouldve been much easier to use one peice of fine line the width on the stripe you want
I have that size tape but it does not bend and curve as good as the 3mm tape. It would have been a disaster.
customspraymods

ylwgtr just heat it up slighty bigger tapes and you can bend how you want it...
❤️❤️❤️🇹🇭🇹🇭
why didn't he sandpaper it before painting anyone?
Jose HD At 00:58 I used scuffing paste and scuff pad, this is used instead of sandpaper.
Ok thanks man.
just use 600 wet paper to prep nuff said to much talk
Looks like a big dent in the tank at front top left once it is shown on the bike, what happened?
I think the owner raced it before taking that picture
hey dave can you please check your direct messages on youtube coz i had a quick question, thanks
Why Dave such a long pause in upload new videos ?? Beautyfull work ,please more to orange peel ! 10:14 is too enaugh :D
Really good job and thanks for sharing - good to know there's a reason body shops charge so much :) that masking job looked tough!
I know painters use heated booths etc , but I came across a problem, it was too cold I think and tried to make a warm area and it was just a helmet and crappy 1k spray bomb , it's easy to get clouding etc and later on my clears crazed , oh well good lessons for me .
What’s easiest way to get rid li the tape lines on pinestripes or color change ? And thanks for all you do to teach us all
I noticed you did this without a booth or independent air supply, and what type of paint was it eg. 2k, water base etc.
What keeps the heaters from igniting the paint fumes?
Not much to see here, except for the fact that today's choice of lipstick was a cherry pinkish one.
I would say Candy blue with some candy Red accents for the panels and a matte black frame.. ( if you are going that far)
Brilliant job mate.
You should paint the tank matte black
Im trying to paint my tank and it’s my first time doing it.. do you wet sand between the gold and black paint coats? And wet sand before the clear? Thank you for the advice in advance..

do you remove the masking tape when the black coat it 100% dry or before it drys ?

Hi so if you have a bit of a height lip between colors do you sand with anything to flatten or just lay up more clear ?
Yes once the clear is dry you can sand it and re clear. Sand with 1000g
Great vid. Glad to see you're back. What are your favorite colors? Should go with something that is appealing to you for your own bike. If you can't decide, you can never go wrong with glossy red and black on a sport bike! Can't wait to see it!

Barbie pink.
After painting just before clear coat...how did you get the pin strip to sit even with the bottom coat...meaning no noticable raised pinstripe.
awesome video! can you get similar results using spray cans? and what do you recommend? Thanks and keep up with your great job!
How do you get both sides the same? Just eyballing?
Great stuff :)

Just wanted to say thanks for the help!!! My paint turned out fantastic!!!
I noticed you did this without a booth or independent air supply, and what type of paint was it eg. 2k, water base etc.
You should do some cool dual color combo with those dna crystal effects you used on your helmet. That would be awesome!!
yes finally a new video.
Good to see you back dave as for your own bike a nice black a d some ghosting effects
Do the guns in Australia not allow you to let off the fluid and keep the air? or do you intentionally let off and on all the way?
How much would u charge to repaint a motorcycle gas tank, I like what have done to yours
after watching the color chrome videos I would say go with the blue chrome.
