One of the all time killer bass lines by an all time killer bass player. The fact that they were a "pretty boy" band didn't do justice to how great they were as musicians and writers.
There's an old VHS series called 'Classic Albums' where the artists, engineers, producers, etc... break down classic albums of theirs, in the studio with the multi-tracks and such. I've got quite a few of them, and one of them is for this album. After watching it, I had to take these guys off my 80's Eye Liner Pop list. They were actually quite good musicians. I'd really have liked to hear what they'd have done had they been around in the 70s or 90s instead.
Yeah, my high school band played this song... our singer was our bass player and I was lead guitar (and sang a few of the quirkier songs, like the Cars). But this bass line was too hard for our guy to play and sing, so we switched off and I played the bass and he sang and played the (rather easy) guitar part. Pretty much we sucked, and no way did I play like Taylor, but it was great fun!
@@deanroddey2881 They had huge hits in the 90's (ordinary world and come undone, you should know these?) in fact they are one of the few bands to have a top 10 album in every decade including last year.
Lex, you nailed it when you commented on all the different textures going on with this song..the killer bass line, the keyboards going nuts and the pow of the guitar riffs, etc. You get it, girl! Rio is a freaking masterpiece. Well done! 😎👍

One smoking bass line from John Taylor, I remember when this first came out it was soooo different from the 70s rock, this and Hungry Like the Wolf was some of the first videos on Mtv, they really kicked the 80s in along with The Cars, followed up by Miami Vice. Man take me back to the 80s.
Ooh, they should react to Jan Hammer's theme song for Miami Vice! There were a lot of electronic instrumentals from the '80s that fused rock with jazz and funk. Herbie Hancock was a jazz artist popular at that time with his song "Rockit."
DURAN DURAN is still making albums and touring. In fact I will see them, again, this August 30 in Fort Worth Texas! This October they will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Duran Duran was a BEAST in the 80's, for a while they ruled MTV. My all time favorite 80's band. They are on my top 5 favorite bands of all time. Nick Rhodes (keyboards / synthesizer) and John Taylor (Bass player) formed the band when they were 16 and 17, still in school. Duran Duran blended post punk, new romantics, funk, and new wave into a style their own. Nobody sounds like Duran Duran. I am so happy they are FINALLY getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October of this year. They deserve it! Deep, deep Rabbit hole... you will enjoy the journey. You've only just scratched the surface.
Loved their 2005 Girl Panic where they bring in all the Super Models to play the band, and the band is working in the hotel and also playing the Journalists...🥳
When it came to video production in the 80's, Duran Duran were the GOLD STANDARD with Rio, Wild Boys (my fave), Hungry Like The Wolf, New Moon on Monday and so many many more.
Lead singer Simon LeBon said "this is the bands love letter to America ". When touring, they were blown away by the sheer size and diversity of the U.S. and how welcoming the people (particularly their fans) were.
Bassist John and drummer Roger Taylor (no relation) are still one of the greatest rhythm sections in the world. The bass line throughout this song is so deep and funky all the other instruments and the vocal can just ride along on its wobbly back.
I was just about to comment about how I never noticed the smoking bass part on this song, then I saw your comment. Thank you. Back in Jr. High, had I known that Duran Duran had a bassist that sounds like Chris Squire or Geddy Lee, I might have given them a chance, lol.
Early Eighties was all about the Sax Spandau Ballet - True is another example. Bruce Springsteen had Clarence Clemons. Bowie, Foreigner, Glen Frey, Men at Work, Hall and Oates, George Michael,... and on and on. Many of my favorites from that time period had the Sax - and that's not even counting the Ska bands.

She made an awesome cake with the band on the top and my friends and I all had our DD gear on. Still have all the albums, singles, 45s SO much fun!
Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf and Girls On Film are one way they got metalheads, like me, to watch and listen to a different type of music, plus Duran Duran and The Power Station kicked ass 🤘
Im a hardcore metalhead and I LOVE this song! But.. the real star of the video is the boat. It is a "Ketch" style sailing yacht built in Scotland in the 1930s. Its a true masterpiece of a vessel. Her name is Ilean and was used as a private charter most of her life. She eventually fell into disrepair during the 1990s and early 2000s due to neglect. In 2006(?) the owner of Panera Watch Co spotted her in an English harbor looking like she was doomed to the scrap yard. He recognized her from this video and bought her on the spot. He spent the next 2 years having her restored using 90% of the original wood!! In 2009 Ilean was entered in the Antigua Regatta yacht race. Some members of Duran Duran were there as Ilean crossed the finish line. They wept.
I can't help it > the real star for me is the model who was engaged to (then married) Nick Rhodes. I wished I was as leggy as her at the time, being a podgy teen with zits all over my face.
Duran Duran were a huge band in the 80's and definitely had a unique sound, mostly because they were such talented musicians. They made interesting songs that had mainstream appeal but also had a new wave vibe.
IKR? They missed out on "Hungry Like the Wolf" by not reviewing the video. My son knows DD from the GTA games and says that their videos remind him of some old DVDs I watch sometimes (Miami Vice).. I'd been a fan of DD since "Planet Earth/Late Bar" but the Rio album was them at their very best.
JT with that sick, sick bassline. Spring, 1983,,,good times! I was 25 yrs old....dating 3 girls at the same time,,clubbing at Cooter's, The Roxy,, Cody's here in Houston, Tx...go-fast go-fast...time of my life.
_Rio_ is one of my desert island album. It is 1980s pop perfection, with not a single bad track on it. "Last Chance on the Stairway" is my favorite from it.
If I had to pick one song and one video to represent the MTV era and the 80's, this one would probably be it. I don't know why, but anytime I hear this song or see this video, it just transports me back to being a teenager in the mid 80's. Seeing the band sailing on that boat, they always looked like they were having a blast, and I always wanted to join them. An amazing song, and an even better video, it never gets old, no matter how many times I've seen/heard it.
Duran Duran was the best of best when it came to the eighties New Wave/The Romantic era! They had the best music and the best videos on MTV! I’m a Duranie since the beginning so I’m happy to hear they will finally be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, 2022! ❤️❤️
IMO, "Rio" is one of their best. It was also the first I heard of them. It played briefly on the radio, but disappeared, then "Hungry Like the Wolf" came out and blew up, and they started playing "Rio" again.
Wow. I was around back then. I don't think I ever heard either song on the radio. That's why MTV was so fresh. They'd played stuff you didn't hear on the radio.
As someone who has has followed this band FOREVER it’s definitely an iconic song & video. Definitely made a heavy imprint on MTV back then. I’ve heard this song broken down and really wild what they did individually. If you can play this bass line, you can play any bass line. They have so many songs that are actually as good if not better than some of the commercial hits. Lex talking about Simon’s singing cracked me up. It’s great live and always fun. Definitely a top album of the 80’s. (Loud and Proud, baby!). I think Lex would love New Religion off the Rio album. She’d love the instrumentation on that one. Not one bad song on that album.
An incredible 80's song about an amazing lady ... and this lady was the city of Rio. The mixture of synthesizer, bass and saxophone is such a nice sound.
I think my favorite Duran song ever and definitely my favorite video. It took far too long before critics realized these guys were amazing songwriters and musicians and not just a bunch of pretty boys with legions of screaming girls.
It took a bit of time to everyone to realise that, but they are now on the way to Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame, all though some consider that institution to be a joke as well.
That is true. I was in high school during the 80's and Duran Duran was my favorite band. Back then people, especially guys, considered them at the time, just another manufactured boy band. They had no idea that Duran Duran was self made and wrote to their own music and lyrics. I knew that Duran Duran would be around for decades and here we are.
There are two versions of that video. The edited for TV version and the original version that includes nudity. I'm pretty sure both can be found on UA-cam.
I love how Lex can like and appreciate good music without having to classify it as "80s sounding". Good music is good music regardless of genre or era.
Massively huge hit....and still in rotation. These guys are great musicians too. I remember when they came on MTV...one of the bands that put it on the map.
Duran Duran was huge during the '80s and some in the early '90s. They were new wave , synth pop, dance-rock, a little post-punk. Soulful singing style, too. New Romantic. They usually had good bass lines, funky guitars (normal for post-punk, new wave). Music you can dance to. You are hearing layers of music due to bass guitar, synthesizers, drums, etc Taylor one of the best bassist out there. Lex just described the typical new wave, post-punk singing style lol. Kind of nonchalant style at times. It's like new wave? No, it's definitely new wave! lol. They were one of the better new wave bands out there. Multiple style, too. Also the saxophone solos were common during the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Duran Duran were great musicians. This was one of many great videos that were hits. Next video for yall to see "Planet Earth", "Girls on Film", "My Own Way", "Violence of Summer", "Ordinary World", and a lot more.
Another one of those awesome 80's classics that, even being a fan of it as a teen, I didn't really appreciate its greatness as much as I should have back then. Now being older looking back, Its much more obvious how brilliant of a piece and work of art this was. As Lex pointed out, the bassline and all the different layers really sets this song apart from so many others at the time.
Brings back great memories of 1982 just after HS graduation. They were definitely innovators and were on the forefront of the new wave movement. You may want to check out 'Save A Prayer' from the same LP, or "Ordinary World' from the early 90's 🔥
Duran Duran was the first group to do on location MVs and always were very creative in pushing the artform of MVs forward. This song was meant to be a tribute to the United States according to the lead singer. They are a very artsy, creative bunch if you listen to them in interviews. I've loved them since they came out in the early 80s - they were hands down the biggest band in the 80s. Always being compared to the hysteria the beatles caused in the 60s
Growing up with Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin DeepPurple the 80’s represented a massive shift to bugle gum rock! Marketing for the ladies the beginning of an industry as we know today.
Great new wave, post-punk group of the '80s and '90s. These pretty boys were great musicians too 😆 the girls loved them. They were popular when I was a kid. GenX stuff here. Fun dance music.
This song for me brings me back to 9th grade after school watching MTV. This got heavy rotation. I was not digging Duran Duran at the time, but hearing it now it holds up! That bassline do! The 80s was like an explosion of new sounds and styles!
In terms of popularity, at their peak, they were as popular as the Beatles with the teenage girls. My high school was flooded with girls lockers of the fab 5.
Brilliant song and recently there was a music magazine rating the baselines in songs through out time and John Taylor (Bassist here) got number 2 with this song! It's a monster baseline and really moves the song forward. It's also the song they end their last encore with during concerts. LOVE LOVE LOVE! And Lex, yes, I think Hungry Like the Wolf is not one of their best!
Journey was my FIRST favorite rock band, but Duran Duran were INSANELY famous New Wave when they arrived and they soon were my next favorite. People called them the second British Invasion. I saw them live in Seattle, 1984. I was 14 years old and the crowds of mainly teenage girls went INSANE! John Taylor, the Bassist was my favorite. These guys REALLY put on a show. You would love Save a Prayer and I think you would like Fame. Love you as always!
This was big when I was in college(kind of dating myself!). This was part of the early 80's British sound, was on heavy MTV rotation. I saw them in Dallas, about 1984. was an excellent concert. Another excellent song on this album was "Save a Prayer"
As a metalhead at the time, I was initially put off by the teen fangirls that gushed about them, but their songwriting and musicianship is undeniable. The entire Rio album is a tour de force. I enjoy it as a straight listen-through, with "The Chauffeur" and "New Religion" as two of my favourite non-singles.
Pretty much can't go wrong with D2. The early stuff is dancey and fun, the later stuff is mature and pensive, the NEW stuff is dancey and retro. Just everything they do is gold.
One of the all time killer bass lines by an all time killer bass player. The fact that they were a "pretty boy" band didn't do justice to how great they were as musicians and writers.
Came here to say the same thing. John Taylor's bass in this song is redonkulous!

Oh the bass line. In my top five all time and I'm a Rush, Yes, and Primus fan.
The classic trick from the 60's and 70's, backward piano opens the song and the album. :)
Their bass player was way underrated, one of the great bass players that came out of 80s music.
More Duran Duran, please! "Girls on Film" "Planet Earth" "New Moon on Monday" "Please, Please tell Me Now"
the 80's..they were a blast
New moon on monday
Great new wave, post-punk group of the '80s and '90s. These pretty boys were great musicians too 😆 the girls loved them. They were popular when I was a kid. GenX stuff here. Fun dance music.
Excellent 🎶 musicians.
Duran Duran is basically Roxy Music with an 80s spin on them. So, if you like them, then yeah you should probably put Roxy Music on your "todo" list.
This video and "Hungry Like the Wolf" were the first cinema-quality music videos filmed/produced.
Love Duran Duran
Funny, this was one of the first big vidioes on MTV. It was on 24/7. 😊🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Played this as a cover on bass. Fun song. Lots of ghost notes.
This was big when I was in college(kind of dating myself!). This was part of the early 80's British sound, was on heavy MTV rotation. I saw them in Dallas, about 1984. was an excellent concert. Another excellent song on this album was "Save a Prayer"
How did dating yourself go? Still together?
The whole album is a masterpiece!
Hell, yeah. More new wave!
John Taylor+Bass=Badass.
They're touring again. Gonna see them in a couple of weeks. Highly recommend you see a Duran concert.
I love the bass in this song. Also, I recommend “Save a Prayer” by Duran Duran.
I can still play this.
Pretty much can't go wrong with D2. The early stuff is dancey and fun, the later stuff is mature and pensive, the NEW stuff is dancey and retro. Just everything they do is gold.
Well said!
Have you reacted to Hungry Like the Wolf?? My favorite Duran Duran!
