There are a few books about the Hippo. The first one is by Andrew Martin (and he has a bad video about it) written a long time ago. Recently an Italian IM, Dalessio, wrote about it and there is a chapter about it in Tiger's Modern.

sorry this is not the set up for Hippo defense!

The hippo is an easy punishable opening. Anyone with good opening principles will have a much better position after 10 moves or so. It's just that people become impatient and rush things with pawn pushes and the position closes which is what hippo players want (aka annoy their opponents). I used to play it for a couple of months but i didn't like my cramped and closes positions and my lack of middle game plans.

Hi Miodrag - thanks for this great video. I love the breaking with f5 plan. There are a couple of issues I'm facing: one where they play ...f5 themselves first. So at minute 10 of this video where you castle before playing f5, can black get ...f5 in themselves before they castle? The second issue is if they delay ...b6 ... Bb7 and go with g6 Bg7 d6 e6 Ne7 - here f5 is difficult because the B is still on c8 guarding f5 - do we need a different approach in these cases or can we still use the same system?
