10 years ago, a very special friend of mine introduced me to this beautiful song, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. She has since passed on but every time I hear it, I think of her. And what better way to do that then listening to Elton John :) "i thank the Lord for the people I have found" Thank you Michelle!
Not only did Elton John put on a beautiful show, with his great, steady, never changing beautiful voice, he was also extremly gracious last night, here in Atlanta,Ga.
Ah, i was a 15 year old boy running home from school, racing across the street at the top the hill and then stright down the foot path to my house, thru the front door, into my room, on goes the radio and this song playing off the charts... it come back..thank you..
Elton John has written the music of our times. His talent will live on forever. I just thank God that I lived during his career and was able to enjoy his beautiful music.
This is my favorite song. It has been since I was 9 yrs. old(I'm 24 now). A few years ago I got to see Sir Elton John in concert at Arco Arena in Sacramento CA. I cried when I heard this song.
On Saturday night, March 30, 2013 I witness the best LIVE performance of my life. Sir Elton John played and sang 26 songs for more than 2 & 1/2 hours. Unbelievable performer! Incredible talent!!! His Voice is as good or better than every!!!
One of the best classic Elton songs . . . always reminds me of times in Manhattan . . . terrific memories of Broadway and Times Square and the Village . . .
I was privileged to see EJ in concert back around 1980. He opened with "Funeral for a Friend" - heavy fog banks and EJ dressed in a white suit under white lights. It was so awesome. It's a great memory. :)
Wow his voice has changed so much. But that’s what life is. I love this song the lyrics are so profound to me, and only Elton can perfect this. God bless Elton and Bernie.
His voice has aged with his talent. He could have never had this much feeling in his voice as a young singer, or that much seasoned talent in his fingers. This is an amazing performance.
Love this song!! Can remember singing it in grade school! Thank you for playing it while in Dallas a couple years ago. That evening with Elton Jon he completed all the songs I have to say one of the very best concerts I have ever seen and I have seen many. I hope he plays it again when he is here. ELTON JOHN IS AMAZING/GIFTED!
...some of the very best and most touching comments here. I can echo many of them, but ultimately a beautiful lyric with a matching arrangement, performed by one of the most treasured performers of our modern times...thank you Elton.
From what I've read, seen and heard, this is a saddening description of New York City. A truly-saddening description. I can feel the pain, written from the pen, within the hands' that hold it. I bow-down, curtsy and bend-the-knee to Bernie Taupin and Sir Elton John, from across the Pond. ): 🇨🇦✌🏻🎶🎸♥️🇺🇸✨🌎💫
Elton John, was fantastic last night here in Atlanta Ga, What a beautiful show, and what a beautiful time I had, he is a true "master" of communicating beautiful music. Thank you so much Elton John for taking me back where I wanted to go, and thank you jinzoAgain for posting this video.
The studio version of this song was used (very well so) in the finale of the American version television series "Life on Mars"...whether you liked the show or not this song worked well as the final song played on that show which featured a LOT of "period music". Elton's also had throat surgery which makes me admire his current singing ability even more. Congratulations, sir, for playing Arizona, Israel and Rush Limbaugh's wedding and not being shy about doing so.
Elton John will write history of music and we may experience this wonderful artist in his time. For it Elton and Bernie the warmest thanks in the heart would be laid.
I never thought I would say this, but I used to think that Lennon/McCartney were the best writers/singers, but now I know that the very best are John/Taupin. Super pair....seen them live 8 times since 1972 & have never been disappointed. I thank the Lord for THEM!
Cindy, I completely agree with you! What a catalog of great songs! Most of my favorites were not the hits! My first concert ever was Elton in Las Vegas, October of 1975 (13 years old)
cindy sonntag Discovered him when I was given his box set for my graduation in 1991. Was able to see him live in Salzburg, Austria in 1992, and 9 more times since. Elton is priceless!!
Got to be probably the best pop artist ever - enormous catalogue, not a crap song amongst them, still writing and producing quality music and probably the most consistent and talented live performing artists of our generation
Great comment, very informative. I actually prefer the sound of his voice in this register, it's got a smooth Elvis/crooner quality and he still sings with so much emotion and intelligence.
It’s funny I heard this song on an FM station just after it was released and I said to Myself that’s the best Elton John so go ever heard!. This was 1972, now it’s 2023 and it still remains timeless.
This song c really gets U thinking! I love this version and pray the lyrics do not B heard in vein!! chackka69 Bless all those 4 2012 I thank the Lord.....!!
This incredible man has contributed so much to my life...I would not be who I am were it not for his music. THis is my all time favorite song of his. Thank you Reggie.
I Had a Very Vivid dream about this song last night.... Don't Know! I had to look and watch a few times ... I wonder why I dreamed it in Full Color Vocals? Thanks Elton John...I loved it!

Whenever you 'THINK' you can sing.. just watch American Idol when they had 'Elton John Night'.... Yes!!!, He's THAT good... when people 30 yrs younger than him.. are not able to do it........ and these are 'the best'........ then you know just how good this cat is!... Well done Elton... as always, well done.
how can 4 people dislike this??? This song is amazing... Elton is amazing.. His Piano is amazing..... NYC IS AMAZING........ BOTTOM LINE.. THIS PERFORMANCE IS AMAZING !!!!!!!
I love how everyone cheers when he says "New York", without noticing that he is singing about how disappointing and dysfunctional he feels their city is.
Lol...that's the point. It's like a family: they thrive on the dysfunction, it's part of their character. Also, the song was written in the 1970s...a more troubled time for NYC. It's better now.
carbonmonrockside Agree, this song is a somber reality. The disillusionment and condition other people suffer over what their idea a dream of a place or situation versus what’s reality. I don't think it was Spanish Harlem itself, but more a metaphor for the issue of being disillusioned or misled. Dreams vs reality
Word escape me when trying to say how I feel about this guy! Woahhhhhhhhh...he just commands so much respect and I'm not religious (am spiritual) but this guy Elton almost makes me that way! "I thank the lord........." - xoxo You rock! see you tomorrow night Elton!
10 years ago, a very special friend of mine introduced me to this beautiful song, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. She has since passed on but every time I hear it, I think of her. And what better way to do that then listening to Elton John :)
"i thank the Lord for the people I have found" Thank you Michelle!
Friend of mine introduced me to W.A.P and got hit by a bus the next day. Ah, memories.
He plays as beautifully as ever! So sharp and precise that the notes just seem to sparkle. His style is instantly recognizable.
One of Eltons greatest long and foregotten gems. Damn, i have allways loved this song !!!!!
Found our Wedding first dance song at last!! Thank you Elton John!
Not only did Elton John put on a beautiful show, with his great, steady, never changing beautiful voice, he was also extremly gracious last night, here in Atlanta,Ga.
my two year old granddaughter is obsessed with this song!
Ah, i was a 15 year old boy running home from school, racing across the street at the top the hill and then stright down the foot path to my house, thru the front door, into my room, on goes the radio and this song playing off the charts... it come back..thank you..
This song is some of Bernie's best lyrics ever. I wish I could write like him!
@Jennifer Puhl miss him? Taupin is still alive.
Bernie...the poet behind the music.
Same here
Bernie will never forgive him for what he did to Candle in the Wind.
My favorite Elton and Bernie song and my all time favorite performance. His voice is rich and stunning. What a gift.
Hearing the audience sing with him gives me chills.
This is R E A L Talent. Nothing like the shit they try to pass off as music today. Long Live Elton !!!
This is by far my favourite song ever. Thank you Sir Elton John for making such beautiful music
elegant, haunting, and beautifully crafted...
Elton John has written the music of our times. His talent will live on forever. I just thank God that I lived during his career and was able to enjoy his beautiful music.

"We thank the lord that there are people out there like you."
I have a hard time believing this song has 17 "downvotes". Absolutely magical, his voice and piano playing are just the BEST!
Now it has 33. I can't believe it either.

It's such a beautiful song and I love this version. It's even better with his dark voice now than it has been back in the 70s.

One of my all-time favorite songs
Thanks Bernie! Love the lyrics !!
Great song! Almost never played on radio!
From what I've read, seen and heard, this is a saddening description of New York City. A truly-saddening description. I can feel the pain, written from the pen, within the hands' that hold it. I bow-down, curtsy and bend-the-knee to Bernie Taupin and Sir Elton John, from across the Pond. ):

Far too much genius for me to handle, on too many levels....

Great song! Go Elton!
Co written by Elton's longtime friend and coauthor of so many EJ hits, Bernie Taupin. Elton was often the melody maker and Taupin the lyricist. ✌
To heck with it,.....this guy can do anything he wants, great musical skill, thanks much
Good morning to the night
One of my favorite songs.....
I Had a Very Vivid dream about this song last night.... Don't Know! I had to look and watch a few times ... I wonder why I dreamed it in Full Color Vocals? Thanks Elton John...I loved it!

I love how everyone cheers when he says "New York", without noticing that he is singing about how disappointing and dysfunctional he feels their city is.
+carbonmonrockside You should listen to those lyrics again...you didn't get it.
I think the song is about the warmth and humanity that lives beneath NYC's loud, dirty exterior
Until you've seen this trash can dream come true.....
Lol...that's the point. It's like a family: they thrive on the dysfunction, it's part of their character. Also, the song was written in the 1970s...a more troubled time for NYC. It's better now.
