I'm so incredibly grateful you are showing the ups AND downs of our wonderful hobby. The depth and honesty is so refreshing! Please keep doing videos like this!
The talk about "standard" backpacking gear versus lightweight is really interesting, it made me think about a phenomenon I've noticed in a number of hobbies where especially if you're researching it on the internet you can get a skewed idea of how "everybody does it" because the people who are the most extremely invested and hardcore about that thing are often also the people who most likely to be heavily involved in online discussion spaces answering questions and giving advice (asked for or not), and so it's easy to get this wrong idea that everyone does a thing a certain way when there's actually a whole range of ways people are out there in the actual world doing it. If you only knew about backpacking from reading forums and reddit threads and what not you'd think every backpacker is an ultralight long distance through-hiker...
Yes! I've found myself really enjoying Eric and Miranda's content in particular because they acknowledge the different factions and explore both ultralight and "standard" backpacking as equally valid ways to experience the outdoors, rather than treating ye olde heavy backpackers as inferior, inexperienced, or outdated. I also think there's a safety angle. One of the biggest safety assets is your skill outdoors, and it's misleading for an experienced backpacker to say "you don't need that" when a less experienced person might not have the skill to safely enjoy their trip without it.
An hour and a half? I said, “looks like we watch this over a couple days.” WRONG!!! Couldn’t turn it off! What an epic adventure and the views are amazing! Any chance Miranda and Rainer will be coming along on some of your international trips? The team chemistry seems genuine and works!
muahahaha that was my plan! I'm so glad this video hooked you! We have discussed the idea of doing an international adventure together but nothing in the works at the moment.
Really great stuff man!! Loved doing this brutal and beautiful adventure with you and watching this video to relive it! At 1:08:30 when you said, “I hope the trail is a little more easy to follow” about the climb out of Cabin Creek I laughed so hard knowing what was to come 😂
31:43 Much love for Miranda being open about her experience with POTS. I have a close friend who struggles with this and it’s so encouraging to see someone managing it and not being held back from doing what they love. Another terrific video, Eric. Thanks for sharing!
I had watched Miranda's version of this trip first and loved it, but it was really interesting to then see yours. Honestly, I'm a huge Miranda fan, probably have seen them all, have only seen a few of yours, but this one pushed me to subscribe! 😃 Your videography is superb! Visually stunning.
The photography in this video is just stunning, especially when accompanied by the cello music! I love the rapport among the three of you! And kudos to Rainer for saving the camera when he fell during his "righteous, righteous" episode! I hope you do more collaborations like this!
Eric, your videos are such a great balance between the silent beauty, the hilarious banter between friends, and informative narrative. There's not a moment I'm bored watching this. Thanks for sharing.
What an awesome adventure and video. Thank you, Eric, Miranda and Rainer for sharing our seldom explored backyard (I live in Leavenworth, actually Plain). This looks like a challenging trek but one I would like to do before I get too old to do it. You guys ROCK, for sure for battling the bugs, elevation gains and personal limitations! 🥰 I forgot to add that chirping you heard coming down Mary's Pass was probably a Pika Rabbit (Rock Hyrax). They are all over the Cascades and live amongst the rock morraines.
@@debbilermond1553 the rock rabbit or rock hyrax is an African animal, and considerably larger than the pika found in the mountains of North America, although in photos there is a resemblance.
@@1519Spring Thanks for pointing that out. I've always known them as Pika Rabbits but looked it up on Google to make sure which said the Pikas were also Rock Hyrax as well. Leave it to Google to make that mistake. I guess my memory is still better than Google, LOL! 🤣
Eric, so many questions: 1. Did I miss your review of the Farm to Summit Chili Mac n Cheese? 2. As an East Coast backpacker, how do you sleep without a rainfly and avoid everything getting damp from dew overnight? Is it just that much drier (in Washington!?). 3. What is your cook pot/mug combo? Don’t the handles get hot? Thanks to you, Miranda, and Rainer for a fun and honest video!
1. The Farm to Summit Mac n Cheese was great! I made it with too much water though so I need a chance at redemption. 2. There was no dew. It was extremely dry out there so no need for a rain fly. 3. Cook pot is the Toaks 750ml pot and mug is the UCO collapsible camp cup (links in the description). Yes the handle on the TOAKS pot get very hot. Gotta be careful!
I think your assessment at the end was fair. You gave everything a fair shot on a longer, more difficult trip, with gear you enjoy and would enjoy maybe on something less of a duration or elevation and while you may have had a more enjoyable time with some more updated versions of the equipment, you got to test the equipment on a more difficult outing. And now you know. You guys can go and do the trip again, with a lighter pack and really see the difference and have that much more of an enjoyable time.
I love seeing my favorite UA-camrs go out together. It adds a very interesting perspective. The chemistry is there, you have a lot of fun together. It's so nice to see What a magnificent place! Wow! The views are magnificent! How lucky to have such beautiful places close to home Miranda
Eric with all the beautiful places you’ve seen and visited, I really love that you’re still able to appreciate new places. One of the wonderful things about backpacking is getting to see such unreal places.
I subscribe to your channel after watching your last hike with Miranda and Rainer. I absolutely love the chemistry that all three of you have and I hope that you have many more excursions together. I'm glad you got to enjoy a great hike in our state, I'm further south 45 minutes from the gate of Mount Rainier. I always thought the mountains were really cool further north, they seem to be a lot more rugged than they are the further south you go in the Cascades.
Watched the whole adventure over a couple of days. Enjoyed it. Love these collaborative videos Eric. Comments by others are spot on regarding showing the ups and downs and staying authentic.
Wow, thank you for such an awesomely beautiful break from my yardwork this afternoon 😂❤ such stunning scenery, and amazing camera work, as always Eric! Kudos to Miranda for sticking with what she loves, and not giving in to stupid chronic diseases! Your symptoms Miranda sound a lot like when I had active Grave's disease, which was most definitely not at all fun! I can sympathize for sure. You are an inspiration 🥰
I wish there was a way to add likes to different parts of a vid. Such as every 15 min. This vid had me trying to add a like several different times. I love that the most difficult hikes are the ones talked about and remembered most. Great vid guy

Just wanted to say I appreciate your commitment to the filmmaking of it all. Im constantly aware of the landscape shots of you guys walking to and away from the camera. And then to have to hike back up or down to get your camera gear makes it all the more difficult, all to get the *shot*. I wanna be like you when I grow up
Glad you all had a wonderful time in Miranda's neck of the woods. I've done an overnight to Lake Augusta but it was freezing cold despite it being in August. I really enjoyed some of your photography/videography. Really nice time lapse too.
Awesome on you all for pushing thru! Not every moment of these trips are sunshine and rainbows, especially when you don't know what the trail holds for tomorrow. It's easy to ruin a beautiful trip like this due to salty attitudes but everyone's going thru the same thing, so help each other out and be a good hiking buddy. I think Miranda specifically may be a Tebagmirdin (Tent-Sleeping bag-Miranda-Dinner) according to the "turducken" rules, but....I don't make the rules and that's probably way too much thought put into this haha
The alpine lake campspots are cool, but the final night on the ridge with the burn scars and peaks behind were epic. I loved the longer video with more detail of your trip.
The views you captured were absolutely stunning. I'm sure it was even better in person and truly hard to choose how much to capture and include in the video. Thank you for sharing your adventure. I love taking the trail less traveled and seeing the places most don't get to.

My personal favorite off-trail backpacking trip was in the Olympic range, going from Mildred Lakes to Flapjack Lakes, crossing between the Horn and Fin.
Stunning video! What a really cool trip! I have been on a couple of trips where (due to me not doing due diligence) we ended up hiking unmaintained segments. What an adventure! And this is also why I also build redundancy into my navigation system!!! For those moments where you're not sure where the trail could have gone off to. I hope you guys travel together again, you are all inspiring to watch! We can do hard things! The payoff is worth it!!! A 50# pack sounds brutal for a 5 day strenuous trip! It seems like everyone had their own challenges and came out unscathed and hopefully happy on the other side!
Eric that was awesome! Thank you for hiking with Miranda you are a true gentleman and fellow hiker and not an ego hiker that most of woman run into. Miranda is a wonderful mentor for the ladies and you bring something to the table for everyone. You really the true thru hike experience on all levels in this film. Be well and Trail on!!🥾 TnT AT86
What an awesome video! Thank you for sharing! I was able to score a permit for Lake Stuart at the Enchaments area last week. But we unfortunately had to leave earlier as expect, as my husband tore his calf muscle on the top of Aasgards Pass. With strong determination and trekking poles, we were able to make it down back to the trailhead just a little past midnight. We had amazing friends that helped us pack our gear and helped carry them back to the car. We absolutely loved the beauty of the Washington Alpine lakes and we would come back again!
Seeing that it was a collab between the three of you, and seeing the length of the video, I knew this would be high quality and well worth the time spent watching it. You did not disappoint! Thanks for sharing this.
Also, fun fact, I'm about 90% sure the white flowers that were everywhere in the meadowy areas was Hemlock. One of the easiest ways to tell between them and Queen Anne's Lace is the absence of the bract, or the little green tutu under the flower.
This is one of the most touching hiking videos I have watched. I love how honest, raw and open you all are. Just blew me away. I will be looking forward to your next one. Totally inspirational, a great escape and inspiration for me to face my fears and get out there.
That mountain has a name and it's Bull's Tooth, but that is the east arm, so not the main peak. Fun hike to watch and nicely planned/scouted. Also, I think it is probably a sleepinghuturduckenmanbag as described.
I absolutely loved the scenery on this trip! I am about to do the Timberline trail and am nervous about it. After watching Miranda and you two doing this I feel more confident. THANK YOU! for this.
I live a few hours away, but I honestly had a moment of inspiration during your video where I considered organizing a WTA crew up there, and you all and me and maybe other local followers could do a filmed trail party to revive that trail. How cool would that be?!
I'd be so curious if an uptick in interest in this trail could revive it. But at the same time, part of the magic of this adventure was figuring out how the heck to navigate it!
Hi guys! I just finished the Alpine Lakes High Route, last week! It was raining on us the entire hike, aind in the high 30's, crazy for august! Anyways appreciate you making this route known I might try it next year! If you could post your exact route somewhere that would be super appreciated!
Me during the gear showdown video --- "that campsite looks beautiful, but the bugs must be miserable." Miranda @19:15 in this video --- "the mosquitos are very out and about today."
I have to confess that I put off watching this because it was almost 90 minutes long, which is like forever in UA-cam years (and which is pretty silly of me since I sit in the same chair looking at the same monitor watching streamed movies All. The. Time.) I'm sorry I waited because this was amazing. Your videography is stunning and your artistry in the production of these videos is a truly amazing. It was an incredibly rewarding hour and a half... ...and now I need to be on the lookout for Miranda's video as a "compare and contrast" exercise (kinda like the slot canyon trip) since I'm betting Rainer didn't pack that camera gear for conditioning purposes...
I go either way with YT videos. Sometimes when I know I like the channel I look for the longer ones. But there are certainly a lot of UA-camrs who don’t edit well and their videos are just way too long. As for Miranda’s video. It’s good. These two compliment each other well and the videos don’t end up being repetitive. Also, in Eric’s video we get to see Rainer and that’s always a treat.
I'm confused.......only 55 thousand subs!? Wtf . I love the channel dude. I've been following you for a long time. Even before you started this channel. Keep up the good work because it's rare I watch a video this length from start to finish. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
I'm visiting a friend in Eastern Washington in a few days and during our trip, we're staying in the East/heading into Idaho, but man after seeing some of these views, I'm starting to question my decision to stay in the East. That's some beautiful scenery!
Looks like an amazing, memorable trip! Thanks for sharing, love it when my 2 most watched channels do a collab. Those were some incredible views (nothing like that near Toronto, closest would be the Escarpment). PS 1:06:50 I want to see the shining birds 😂
Miranda must be a Moody Blues fan too. She started out all 'Dr Livingstone I presume, stepping out of the jungle gloom' and progressed to 'hands held high in a sign of peace'. :D
🤩I literally just subscribed to Miranda AND Eric about a week ago not knowing they knew each other and here they are together! It's like bonus content.😝
i like the tour videos. your channel is underrated. i guess people prefer gear reviews or something but i myself find this better than what dan becker is doing currently... miranda is also a fun hiking buddy btw
I hunt out in CO in the San Juan National forest and we head out from the main camp and set up a spike camp for 4-5 days, go back in and resupply and finish up with another 4-5 day camp. I use the Mystery Ranch Metcalf and its usually 60-70 lbs of gear and usually go 6-8 miles out to set up the camp. My ruck never sounded like yours. THAT would have driven me NUTS!! Unfortunately the light weight packs will not work. I need the meat shelf in the Metcalf to help load out the elk. without it, its NOT fun! Great video that is some beautiful scenery!
Hiked the chain lakes loop last week on our visit to northern Washington. All of the hikes we had planned were in for zones so we headed over to the Mt Baker wilderness for this treat! Thankfully it was quite a bit cooler when we were there.
Great video! I love my MR Bridger, but it's mostly for canoe camping. I can totally see it being a beast on an actual hike- it gets a bit old even just on 1-2M portages! But man, if you want a pack that you KNOW will take a beating and just laugh it off it's hard to find anything more durable.
@@Tina-zi9dv glad there was one person out there enjoying it. Reminds me of how sometimes a whiff of an outhouse transports me back to my childhood trips to our family cabin in MT. A bad smell, but fantastic memories!
A great job & vid Eric! Did a similar one, with similar weight (9 days food, instead of camera kit) and a disappearing trail. Same result, too: never again 50 lbs, and now have worked the kit down from 86 ltrs, to 80 (not a big step but on that one I can attach my skis) to 65 ltrs... And counting
Eric, what a beautiful expression of the joy, the pain, the wonder of the Pacific Northwest alpine. Your views of Mt. Stuart on the morning of day 5 were sublime. But what were you thinking-- going back to a 30# base on a 5 day XC up-and-downer??
Wow what a trip! Kudos to yall. Some beautiful shots. I would have been fine to hike to the first camp yall were at, stayed there another night and fished.
Btw the "caffeine is dehydrating" thing is based on an old low-quality study that through repetition became a nugget of conventional wisdom, current best evidence is that while it's certainly not the best hydration option that cup of coffee in the morning is not going to be particularly detrimental to your overall hydration balance...

Love this. Honestly the only time I have felt like collectively pushing limits was on day hikes where we had already gotten 80-90% of the way
Seeing that it was a collab between the three of you, and seeing the length of the video, I knew this would be high quality and well worth the time spent watching it. You did not disappoint! Thanks for sharing this.
Fun adventure! I love getting to see the Rainer Miranda interactions with both on camera. Such a duo
Ouch, that DB dig 😂😂 that's true friendship ❤😂
Also, fun fact, I'm about 90% sure the white flowers that were everywhere in the meadowy areas was Hemlock. One of the easiest ways to tell between them and Queen Anne's Lace is the absence of the bract, or the little green tutu under the flower.
Randomly stumbled upon this video and channel - how fun and inspiring! Thinking of going camping again soon! ( It's been over 20 years!)
oh yay! So glad you found me here and found some inspiration!
This is one of the most touching hiking videos I have watched. I love how honest, raw and open you all are. Just blew me away. I will be looking forward to your next one. Totally inspirational, a great escape and inspiration for me to face my fears and get out there.
aww thank you! I'm so happy to hear that.
Love the adventures and chemistry you guys have together ... it looks like an amazing trip! Absolutely beautiful scenery!
Me during the gear showdown video --- "that campsite looks beautiful, but the bugs must be miserable."
Miranda @19:15 in this video --- "the mosquitos are very out and about today."
I absolutely love this collaboration, you are both hilarious and so genuine, you are so good for my soul!!
Mirandas tiny 'no thank you' when you offer her five bucks to eat the mushroom 😭😂
haha, it was perfect.
Miranda still has manners 😊
Epic views. Great camaraderie! Thanks for taking us along. The best!
I am also anti-long-YT-videos and would highly recommend Eric's 50-min Colorado Trail video. The man is a cinematographer, it's truly amazing.
Love the long trip videos, especially when you talk about the gear you’re using on the trip, while on your trip
thanks! I'm glad to hear you like the style
I'm confused.......only 55 thousand subs!? Wtf . I love the channel dude. I've been following you for a long time. Even before you started this channel. Keep up the good work because it's rare I watch a video this length from start to finish. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
love the scenic views with music, more of that please! great vid!!
I'm visiting a friend in Eastern Washington in a few days and during our trip, we're staying in the East/heading into Idaho, but man after seeing some of these views, I'm starting to question my decision to stay in the East. That's some beautiful scenery!
The whole state of Idaho is on fire this year :(
Looks like an amazing, memorable trip! Thanks for sharing, love it when my 2 most watched channels do a collab. Those were some incredible views (nothing like that near Toronto, closest would be the Escarpment).
PS 1:06:50 I want to see the shining birds 😂
Just finished hiking into chain lakes. What an amazing place to visit. Great video. Thank you eric!
Miranda you are a real champ
❤
I mean this with a good spirit, Miranda is a beast!
This was absolutely wonderful to watch! Thank you so much!
Awesome guys! Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
i like the tour videos. your channel is underrated. i guess people prefer gear reviews or something but i myself find this better than what dan becker is doing currently... miranda is also a fun hiking buddy btw
Fantastic video. The shots of the scenery are perfectly paired with the music.
Truly one of the best outdoor vidoes I've seen in a long time. It had the magic.
aw shucks! Thank you!
Magnificent!!! From Miranda Cyrano of the wilderness to those sublime views!!!!
So many great views!
Hiked the chain lakes loop last week on our visit to northern Washington. All of the hikes we had planned were in for zones so we headed over to the Mt Baker wilderness for this treat! Thankfully it was quite a bit cooler when we were there.
Very much enjoyed following along!
I absolutely enjoyed this hike with you all ❤
Great video! I love my MR Bridger, but it's mostly for canoe camping. I can totally see it being a beast on an actual hike- it gets a bit old even just on 1-2M portages! But man, if you want a pack that you KNOW will take a beating and just laugh it off it's hard to find anything more durable.
The Mystery Ranch packs are great for durability and heavy loads! That's cool you're taking them canoe camping. Kudos!
@@eric_hanson Yea for canoe camping it might as well be ultra light!
I really love the sound of the squeaky backpack ❤
I hope this is sincere! I debated muting it but that was the real sound out there!
@@Tina-zi9dv glad there was one person out there enjoying it. Reminds me of how sometimes a whiff of an outhouse transports me back to my childhood trips to our family cabin in MT. A bad smell, but fantastic memories!
@@eric_hanson Quite sincere. Didn't sound that loud to me, but I just like the steady cadence.
I am glad you all survived and didn't kill each other. Eric. Nice videography. You have a real talent.
Super video Eric, beautiful scenery. But, that squeakie pack would drive me nuts! Still a wonderful hike
You guys together are so funny 😂! Los tres amigos 👍👍👍!
haha yes! Pretty much constant laughter, in between being completely out of breath.
The views are butt ugly to the eyes!!! But the mental memories are forever. ❤Miranda and Rainer. Thank you for amazement! 😊 50lbs!
Eric, what a beautiful expression of the joy, the pain, the wonder of the Pacific Northwest alpine. Your views of Mt. Stuart on the morning of day 5 were sublime. But what were you thinking-- going back to a 30# base on a 5 day XC up-and-downer??
Y'all did a great job Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea!
But seriously though, that is an adventure🤩
Loved every minute, the best experiences come from the toughest challenges.
I don’t have any backpacking friends where I am, or anywhere really. I need to go make some! Y’all have so much fun.
Wow what a trip! Kudos to yall. Some beautiful shots. I would have been fine to hike to the first camp yall were at, stayed there another night and fished.
This was a fun watch thanks
Wow what a burn at the end! 🤣 And man you all always backpack in the same areas I am either the week before or week after I do (or close to it). 🤣
