I think the back lit walking scene was more Saving Private Ryan inspired because Lucas and Spielberg put nods to each other's movies in their movies. Like Club Obi Wan in Temple of Doom I also think Saving Private Ryan is a little more in tune with what's going on. On a mission but no clue where to go.
Ryan, get a pdf of West End Games “Alien Encounters” not only will you find out how many “new” aliens are just repurposed from legends, right down to the Lesat’s from rebels being the name of the Proto Wookiees
The show has been really good so far! Its amazing on how out of touch the kids home world is with all the events that happened , and the owl species is badass.
Yes, I thought I was absolutely going to hate it because of Green Grass lawns being mowed by a Droid and cars that are on rails and trams being ridden to school, etc and the neighborhoods look like Costa Mesa California. It's not a Galaxy far far away. but the show came across so much better right away and very relatable and made it worthwhile to watch
They probably don't even know that the Clone Wars happened. I don't think their society has been isolated for decades, but centuries. Likely cut off somewhere during the high republic era. Or I'm thinking that their Supervisor is really a computer.
Are you kidding? Screen Crush identified over 170 gratuitous nuggets of nostalgia bait in the first two episodes alone and this one has plenty itself. If you realize something is nostalgia, it takes you out of the story which defeats the purpose of entertainment.
I liked it when the kids were saying they didnt wanna leave with out SM33 and they were describing him to Salvo and Neel said "don't forget the mouse that lives in his eye hole". Then later Neel is feeding the mouse some of that stew.
SM33 has said twice “can’t say I’ve heard of At Attin.” Second time he made it weird… “only going to say it once,” “ aye” I’ll bet everything that he’s being litterally. He litterally CAN’T say that he HAS heard of it. He’s blocked from it. If you watch that scene again with that in mind, it’s perfect!
And also in Port Borgo you can see that Hondo Ohnaka's ship is there with all the other ships. So with that, hoping he's brought into live action in this show
Theory: Jod/Jack/Silvo is was not a Padawan. He has no connection to the Jedi. He is Force sensitive but is not strong with the Force. Grew up in a time when being Force sensitive was a bad thing. He hid his ability but used it to help himself in his pirate ways but was never corrupted by the Dark Side. Throughout the series the Light Side will teach him selflessness.
Ooh I like this theory! Maybe Wim will show him his holopad of stories about what the Jedi were like and this will help inspire Jod to want to be the Hero for a change!
Yeah, I agree. Jude Law is 51, but that doesn't mean Crimson Jack is 51. So he could be right on the cusp of the Republic, Clone Wars and Order 66. Everyone is so focused on Jedi and Sith and forget that Jedi and Sith are just Force users that subscribe to a particular ideology. Not every Force user is a Jedi or a Sith. Especially after the fall of the Republic.
We saw rations in Force Awakens that seem to be vacuum sealed and able to be reheated easily. The kids probably wouldn't know what they were, but Jod would be familiar enough to recognize them on the ship. And for why they lasted so long...sci-fi stuff
One small reference, Crimson Jack is also known as Captain Silvo a likely reference to Long John Silver from Treasure Island (or planet if you're a cultured millennial). And that character is a pretty good fit for Jod going forward. (Scoundrel who learns to have a heart through interactions with kids).
He's definitely going to have a change of heart. He's in it right now for A) his freedom and B) the treasure, but by the end he'll protect the kids and the planet for sure.
This show is getting my seven year old son into Star Wars I have had him watch Rebels and The Bad Batch but he never really took to those shows and I am a Mega Star Wars fanatic so this show is keeping his attention thus making him into Star Wars just like I was at his age epic
This. This right here is why the show is made! It's a fun watch for existing fans, but they need a way to get younger fans into Star Wars too. I hope your son is watching it with the same wide eyed excitement we all watched our first taste of Star Wars!
The first thing I thought of seeing Kymm was that she was a reference to "The Library" from ATLA/LOK. The place full of knowledge guarded by that giant Owl Spirit?

You can see when he is leading the kids out he points to the empty and full corridor and lets them make a decision on which way to go. Before educating them on the correct way.

I truly am amazed how Doug knew the food was from Detroit. Solid episode, but I always have more fun watching the screencrush for these episodes! Also absolutely love The Beach Boys reference! 13:41
No, what gets me is that Ryan voices Doug, so these are conversations Ryan is having with himself. I don't know if Ryan voices the Sock Puppet, but definitely he voices Doug. There was a video where they misedited and the camera was on Ryan while he clearly was voicing Doug. They failed to add in at the correct time signature the video clip of Doug. So, amazingly, Ryan goes from his voice to Doug's voice without any cuts or edits. He just merges from one to the other and back again. When you realize this, and that Doug in reality isn't there in the scene with Ryan, it's just Ryan having a two sided conversation with himself, much like Golem and Smegel, that it becomes a little unnerving. I mean, does Ryan just have these conversations with himself and Doug on camera or do they regularly talk about popculture off camera? Does Doug hate how Ryan keeps throwing the ball and Doug keeps having to bring it back to him, otherwise if he didn't one day Ryan is going to be upset because he lost his ball at the park? Do they ever go on rants together about politics? I have to remind myself that talking Doug is just a thing for the videos, but there are times when I do wonder if Ryan and Doug have off deep camera conversations.
The other thing to note is how he asked that question, Is the Supervisor going to ask the Republic for help, not the New Republic, but the Republic, which seems to imply that they still think the Republic is around and have no knowledge of the Clone Wars or the Empire.
Meant to have written this earlier with Episode 1. The stories/games Wim is playing in the first episode on his pad is very similar to the wizard game/story that Josh Baskin is playing in the film "Big" from 1988. Honestly surprised hasnt been noticed

The next droid woken up after the CZ droid says something similar to what C3PO said when he got fragged and dragged into the droid maintenance bay on Bespin.
At 5 minutes in when you comment on the artwork looking like the art on that scroll, yeah, I agree. However, when I first watched the episode, the reference that instantly clicked for me was the mural on Lothal that Ezra used to find the world between worlds and rescue Ahsoka.
I think it can definitely turn out to be rather decent. I guess I didn't pay too close of attention to the trailer in that I didn't realize that it centered around the group of kids. Ergo, making this more like a typical Disney kid adventure show that happens to be in the SW universe. I mean, it essentially is that, but it looks like it's becoming much more than that. There's enough of the kid adventure to bring in a lot of the younger audience, but plenty of SW universe lore to interest the current fan base.
All I know is that SM33 damn well better get another bad-ass fight scene, and it damn well better last more than a few seconds... and not end with him getting sucker-zapped in the back like a chump. Oh, and the rat who lives in his eye hole must be given any medals the children get during the finale's "awarding of medals" scene.
At Attin has been in isolation since before the fall of the old republic, this is why the kid was using mint condition old republic credits because they are still producing them on At Attin. Since they have been in total isolation for so long, it's incredibly unlikely that the great work has anything to do with cloning Palpatine. Since At attin has been a hidden world for nearly a thousand years before Palpatine is even born.
One of the big things I didn't like about this episode is the kid's lack of wonder at the moon and scenery on the Owl's planet. They lived more or less in suburbia, I would imagine they would be awestruck by the view...
@@jeffs6090 Moon had atmosphere just no plants, similar to the asteroid the Millennium Falcon hides in when escaping the Death Star having atmosphere and bats
He was killed by Han Solo in Marvel Star Wars issue 15 in 1978 and brought back on 2 February 2022 by Disney in Star Wars Halcyon Legacy comic miniseries.
Hey Ryan! Obviously late here - but the gang and Jod arriving at Kh’ymms place feels very reminiscent of Dorothy and the Scarecrow Lion and Tin Man arriving at the emerald city castle in the Wizard of Oz. From the way they knock, to the way they are greeted. “Who’s that knocking on my door?” Also - Wizard of Oz being about a group of misfits traveling through the woods with Dorothy’s ultimate goal of getting home similar to the kids. And at a time when Wicked is huge! Could be a stretch. Love your videos!
I enjoyed meeting Kym. She was a trove of lore, star charts, scrolls, and wisdom. The voice performance was really enjoyable, and i found myself pleased to realize her speech reminded me of "Evie" from The Mummy. You know, the Librarian :D
the owl is definitely the most interesting character. her knowledge and the fact that she called the republic is intriguing. thought she would be another pirate. i hope we get more info on the other planets being destroyed
Yeah, I was saying last week that his character was basically straight up Long John Silver (pirate pretending to be a cook and befriending a child to infiltrate his ship) and then this week we find out his name was bloody Silvo! Whats more Long John was famous for his parrot and we see that Silvo has a deep personal history to an Owl.
Love it when you guys are on point! Time will tell if your suppositions will be wrong or right but tons of cool information and corrections rocks. Thanks!!
The lady in the art resembles the Alderaan lady mural in the clone wars episode when Padme gets shot by Aurra Sing. It's in the same style as the ancient Lothal art in star wars rebels.
I honestly love the theory of at-attin unknowingly serving the sith for hundreds of years and helping keep them afloat through exile as well as being a big part of funding Palpatine’s activities.
I’m loving all the Disney parks connections in this series. At-Attin kinda seems like a weird EPCOT-like planet, so that’s cool. Plus the little guy from Captain EO and the R3X droid. I hope we see more of these details going forward. A Star Tours mention of some kind would be so cool.
Note that the security droids also have the same colour and style of markings as the prisoner fatigues in Andor. I'm guessing this is a general pre marking of the old republic/imperial prison system. Maybe the original inhabitants of At-Attin were transported convicts and created a new colony, like Australia.
I really am enjoying Skeleton Crew - it is so much fun to watch, and actually feels like watching Star Wars did, when I was a kid, whilst being really different and really new in terms of story and characters. It also looks and sounds beautiful, it is really very well made and produced.
I also think crimson jack used to be a jedi. He then witnessed all he believed in get destroyed, so he turned to a life of piracy. I also think he is only helping the kids because he thinks he finally will get a big pay day but will eventually actually stop caring about the big payday and more about the kids themselves.
Kim and her space also reminded me of Aughra from The Dark Crystal, another 80s film about young humans/gelflings going on an adventure. And of course with some ties to Star Wars, chiefly that Aughra was performed by Frank Oz who performed and voiced Yoda.
The X-wings that are hunting the Ebon Cinder fire Ion cannons to disable the ship at 32:06, disabling one of the engines. When they land (32:47) you can see the lower two laser cannons have been replaced with a different weapon - presumably the ion cannons. Makes sense for the X-wings that are being used as police ships to have ion cannons to disable ships instead of destroy them.
The Great Work is giving me Tales From the Loop vibes. In both, we follow the stories of children whose parents work together on a secret project that the town is built around.
It’s all very much like Treasure Island where Long John Silver was working as a ships cook even though he was a pirate. Also Jack is another version of the name John.
Brilliant. Most Star Wars TV liveaction shows including good ones (the Mandalorian, Ahsoka and Andor) feels a bit slow. But when I'm watching this: "It is already finished give me more."
I get where you're coming from but i think the fandom should stop acting like those films don't exist. They exist, they're canon, and might as well have material that can retroactively explain and improve on the decisions they made
@@skirmisher1901 honestly the movies have some really fun moments and some of the story plots are very interesting. Are there lots of issues sure, was a lot of it out of control, yes, but they have done a lot to try and fix those issues i feel. But people can't accept it for whatever reason
@saurabhtantry5550 I mean his actions have a snowball effect which in the end has Rey, trained by Luke and Leia finally end Palpatine. And destroy the Sith Eternal. So he does, from a certain point of view be the domino that destroys the Sith. Could also argue that killing Palpatine without then having an apprentice then dying cut the chain. Of the Master and Apprentice rule of two.
1:30 Two kids' movies. The first did have a happy ending for the family saved by the teen son. The second undoes that in its opening set right after. I utterly despise when sequels do this (cf. Alien³).
a big moment when the door of the prison was being hacked/opened, is just as the kids call him a Jedi and he looks at them, the door turns from blue to red as silence fills the air for a moment... that REALLY feels like foreshadowing to something more sinister going on with "Crimson Jack"... also something you missed is the patch thats on the girls bag for "being at the top of her class" IS the same symbol on the mural in her mothers home... funny enough her mother is the one who gave her that patch in the first episode
Things I caught: On the pirate moon there was republic medical cruisers docked Also cool when they try to break the fuel line it looks like they are trying to take down an ATAT like Luke on hoth with the snow speeder line
The Never Ending Story ref was spot on.. I giggled in my tea. Also, Old Yeller should and Where the Red Fern Grows should be considered trauma based therapy along with Watership Down. Just say'n. :)
Crimson Jack was also called Silvo - I thought that was an obvious reference to Long John Silver in Treasure Island, who is a similarly complicated character, with both sympathetic and unsympathetic aspects. I also thought that Crimson Jack was at least an oblique reference to Jack Sparrow.
I think the Supervisor ends up being Brendol Hux. Remember, he was the one to provide additional funding and security to Moff Gideon. The money had to come from somewhere. Hux is also in charge of Project Necromancer, which would connect him to the Sith Eternal.
8:18 the bigger ship is not "Lothalian Corvette", but a "Pelta Class Frigatte", firstly shown in Clone Wars, you can definitely recofnize it by a cockpit form, "wings" at the back of the ship, as well as the high thing (idk what's that, probably a second bridge) between wings. If I am not mistaken - that's the first non-animation appearence of this ship on screen
I'm enjoying this series. The thing that often signals how much I'm enjoying a show is when an episode finishes and it seems like it's only been on for a minute. The Easter Eggs as always add a dimension to the show's significance. It's a shame I have to wait a week for the next part. But, that's a good thing too. A little antici....................pation never did any harm.
I also like that when the pirates Say Captain Silvo, it sounds like they are saying Captain Silver, another great pirate and one who helped a boy...usually, in Treasure Island. But that might just be me.
the silhouette of the kids following crimson jack in the moon reminded me of the shot in the pilot of rick and morty. even the whacky, not completely trustworthy adult leading the naïve children across the galaxy

He was killed by Han Solo in Marvel Star Wars issue 15 in 1978 and brought back on 2 February 2022 by Disney in Star Wars Halcyon Legacy comic miniseries.
The long camera shot of Wim's dad at the parent meeting means something. He's knows more.
Or he's going to take matters into his own hands eventually
Hey Ryan! Obviously late here - but the gang and Jod arriving at Kh’ymms place feels very reminiscent of Dorothy and the Scarecrow Lion and Tin Man arriving at the emerald city castle in the Wizard of Oz. From the way they knock, to the way they are greeted. “Who’s that knocking on my door?”
Also - Wizard of Oz being about a group of misfits traveling through the woods with Dorothy’s ultimate goal of getting home similar to the kids.
You know, the Librarian :D
the owl is definitely the most interesting character. her knowledge and the fact that she called the republic is intriguing. thought she would be another pirate. i hope we get more info on the other planets being destroyed
she also happens to have an ancient paper scroll that has plot critical explanation
Screencrush love the Detroit joke about where the food came from ! As a detroiter I appreciate that humor
Did I hear Jod Na Nawood also called "Slivo"? Silvo = (Long John) Silver from Treasure Island (or Treasure Planet)?
Yeah nobody is talking about this…?!? I immediately was confused when I heard it, felt like a hat on a hat…
Thanks!!
Great breakdown & review as always… and I love when you guys mention each other and/or channels … except that one channel that no one mentions 🤔
The lady in the art resembles the Alderaan lady mural in the clone wars episode when Padme gets shot by Aurra Sing. It's in the same style as the ancient Lothal art in star wars rebels.
Thank you for the WAOLOM Taylor reference - added an extra smile to my day!
Solid episode. My nephews and I are hooked
It's 100% better than most the stuff we've seen recently in Star Wars. Like, all it took was to bring it back to basics.
Yay ❤
I honestly love the theory of at-attin unknowingly serving the sith for hundreds of years and helping keep them afloat through exile as well as being a big part of funding Palpatine’s activities.
This was a great breakdown! Good job again SC!
Best episode so far
Joe Vs the Volcano reference, whether it was intentional or not I had the same thought you did. Love it
I’m loving all the Disney parks connections in this series.
Me sentí como en mi infancia mirando el imperio contra ataca, 😢 necesitaba esto de Star wars
I’m loving it so far.
That's f'n cold, but true. If Doug knew the truth, he'd have nightmares. 1:24
Dave Filoni and his love for record-keeping map-sharing Owls, amiright
I LOVED the cool new owl-cat thing! Bring her back!!
Thoroughly enjoying The Skeleton Crew!!!
Kim is more like Aughra frome The Dark Crystal.
I love all the old SW stuff they put in this show. So much nostalgia!
that observatory reminded me a lot of the old republic structures you see in jedi survivor on the shattered moon
already better than the entire season of the acolyte
Better than book of Boba Fett too, at the moment about the same level as early Mando or Andor.
The Great Work is giving me Tales From the Loop vibes. In both, we follow the stories of children whose parents work together on a secret project that the town is built around.
The where they’re walking along the ridge always makes me think of Spaceballs 🤣🤣
Also in the beginning when Wim was playing with his dolls…straight outta Spaceballs🤣
I hope the great work and the real secret behind At Attin doesn’t have anything to do with the sequel trilogy.
@ but if the sequel trilogy is canon, then it completely retconns anakin skywalker being the chosen one
@saurabhtantry5550 ok so what are we gonna do about it, it's canon no matter how we feel. might as well attempt to improve it
@saurabhtantry5550 I mean his actions have a snowball effect which in the end has Rey, trained by Luke and Leia finally end Palpatine.
Alien³).
Kh'ymm was a callback to Aughra from The Dark Crystal
Thank you 🙏🏻
She’s another cooption of Bubo from Greek mythology.
Augra’s planetarium vibes with the owl cat. Dark Crystal yo.
Thanks for adding Bluesky!
a big moment when the door of the prison was being hacked/opened, is just as the kids call him a Jedi and he looks at them, the door turns from blue to red as silence fills the air for a moment... that REALLY feels like foreshadowing to something more sinister going on with "Crimson Jack"... also something you missed is the patch thats on the girls bag for "being at the top of her class" IS the same symbol on the mural in her mothers home... funny enough her mother is the one who gave her that patch in the first episode
Things I caught:
On the pirate moon there was republic medical cruisers docked
Also cool when they try to break the fuel line it looks like they are trying to take down an ATAT like Luke on hoth with the snow speeder line
9:53 Wait Alfred Molina played Satipo in Indiana Jones!?!?!? How did I not notice this before?!?!?!
A little antici....................pation never did any harm.
the silhouettes on the hill could also be a reference to bergmans the seventh seal (1957) but what do i know
I also like that when the pirates Say Captain Silvo, it sounds like they are saying Captain Silver, another great pirate and one who helped a boy...usually, in Treasure Island. But that might just be me.
the silhouette of the kids following crimson jack in the moon reminded me of the shot in the pilot of rick and morty. even the whacky, not completely trustworthy adult leading the naïve children across the galaxy
