    I honestly think a lot of the reason Rugby referees are respected so much and are known as household names is because they're mic'd up. A lot of the human interactions get picked up and the audience feels a connection to them. You then find that audiences are far more forgiving of the 50/50 decisions, or even mistakes, because we can hear why they made their decisions. Ultimately all of that feeds back into respect for the referees, as children and grassroots level players have this ingrained in them from watching the professional level on TV. We often talk about football referees not getting the respect they deserve-I think this could be a hugely positive move!

    Just shows how much clearer decisions are given. Add in the review on the jumbo screens for all to see as well. Would / could / should make the players wings and swear less at the officials ... the should never do so anyway but they do and that’s the image presented to the kids.

    I was a referee beside these guys at referee training each week, they were great guys and many years before this. I have shared this video 30+ times to refereeing forums and groups.
    I believe it would be advantageous to clear up any confusion about decisions on the field and for training purposes after the fact.
    I think broadcasters being able to get a live switch to referee communications at crucial times could clear up and encourage referees not to be a little one eyed let's just say.

    I have heard that at top level rugby matches in the UK that spectators can purchase headphones tuned to the ref channel. I think that would be marvelous. That could help the football situation too. Taming the TV audience is one thing but the stadium audience is a different "beast' of an immediate concern.

      @@RobReacts1 I think the biggest thing at taming crowds at rugby matches is that the review is shown on the big screen in the stadium. So even tho you cant hear the ref in the stadium, seeing the replay in slow motion at the same time as the ref really helps calm the crowd as nobody is confused as to what actually happened (even if people disagree with the decision).

    As someone that has walked rugby (both codes) and football, I think the openness of rugby due to moving refs and the transpracy with to calls is fantastic for spectators as you can hear and see why decisions are made even if you don't like them. At the moment you're guessing sometimes in football. Oh and don't get me started on var where they seem to take 10 minutes sometimes deciding on offsides or fouls! 🙁

    I dimly recall a Premier League ref getting mic-ed up in the 90s and it was an absolute PR disaster, with the ref getting sworn at repeatedly, nearly constantly, by players.
    I also dimly recall a Championship, or possibly League 1 side experimented with only the captain talking to the ref and that season they got less cards than any other team in the league ( disclaimer, this may be inaccurate, I didn't pay that much attention to football at that time)

    • @RobReacts1

      @@RobReacts1 Is there an argument to be made that players know that though? They know the first incident is only going to be a warning, so they know they're going to get away with it. In this instance, with the game as it is now, it was probably the right call, but I think it would be good to get to a position where players don't think they can get away with it - because they don't. If it's an offence, it's an offence. If you deliberately delay a restart - it's a card. Wouldn't take too long for them to stop doing it. If course, they would no doubt come up with creative ways to get around it - they always do, but it slightly undermines the referee's authority (to my mind) if you have to break a rule twice before it is applied.

    • @arvedui89
      @arvedui89 3 роки тому +1

      @@JamesChiles For me slowing the restart, kicking the ball away, taking the ball with you - should be a a yellow card every single time. After four weeks it should be clear, that it won't be accepted in any circumstances. Place the ball on the ground at carry on. Taking your shirt in goal celebrations makes much less harm and is a yellow every day of the week. At the same time you have to kick the ball to the stands or do it at least two seconds after the whistle to get booked. And every single dubious throw-in starts with opposing player taking the ball with him for a two-three seconds or throwing it to attacking player so high, that it flies for ever.

    Football players get away with the dives and bull they due partly because there’s not much strictness on the cards, in rugby if you get a yellow you go to the sin bin for 10 mins whilst in football you need two yellows to become a red, so if the offence fits the crime then that player and team should be punished because most teams do this willy nilly to gain an advantage. I believe at least TMO of an offence should be introduced to all sports not just to keep players safe but to make the fear of cheating become less of a thing due to all eyes on that TMO.

    Having had the chance to be mic'd up as a rugby ref it takes a little getting used to at first but once you are used to it it is a great help. It allows you to use your assistant refs to watch things happening on the side you are not also they can watch what is happening off the ball and so many other things it is an aid to refs that makes life so much easier. It is always said the 3 officials work as a team and being in 2 way contact makes being a team so much easier and players are more aware that 3 sets of eyes are on them

    • @RobReacts1

    I understand managing the game but I think that stopping the restart should be a yellow every time. It is so frustrating to watch and is far too common in the game. It’s definitely a good idea to put mic on the refs like in rugby and also the use of VAR should be changed, it shouldn’t be about warning the ref about a "clear error" but more like in rugby to check about litigious situations. IMO football referees should go more often to the screen. Also in that case they should have the ability to stop the clock so it doesn’t waste too much time
