Great concept! Another trick I learned years ago if you are pressed for space, deer won't jump over a fence if they aren't sure where the top is, a moderately tall fence with small wires confuses them and keeps them out.
@@babsofkansas9401 Deer (like most prey animals) have poor depth perception due to the location of the eyes on the side of their heads. Nice work kids, I see Mrs Stoney Ridge was doing her Price is right modeling pose with the fence post near the end of the video, Bob Barker would be proud.
Newbies to fence building are always fun to watch:here's a hint: lean the "T" post toward you to mid bicep level put the driver on then lean it up and begin driving. That way you're not lifting the driver 6 foot plus post after post.....Work smarter and not harder.
Here's another one: to avoid blisters(even with gloves on) and smashing your pinky fingers raise the driver to just where the "tube" is just below the top of the post then start your down stroke. Half way through the stroke loosen your grip on the handles as the driver is just about to strike the top of the post. Your hands and fingers will not be getting the full shock load with this method. It's a rhythm thing just like dancing and takes a little practice.
Thanks Amos....great tip...I guess when ur 6'5" ya don't think much about that......or if you're not a pro fence builder ....driving post today I'll make it a point to mention that

The deer ate EVERYTHING this past year. Even rhododendrons, junipers, and hemlocks. Never seen this for 23 years here in central NH. Anyway, I put up a 6’ black poly mesh fence with posts made from 1-2” maple saplings from the woods. About 600 ft total, mostly through woods so I had to do a little cutting and cleaning. At first it seemed to work, but on a few occasions they jump the fence and go on an all-you-can-eat binge of our flowers, blackberries, daylillies, apple trees, etc. They don’t really jump over the fence as much as just crash into it, as the fence gets torn about half way down. So now I just ordered the poly-SS braided wire and screw in clips, along with an AC charger that I will plug into a garage outlet. My question is this: should I put the wire at average deer “nose height” of about 40”, or should I put it at the top of the fence at about 66” from the ground? Do they actually need to touch it and get zapped? or, can they sense the electricity just by being 6-12” inches from it? I’m already tired of fixing torn up poly fencing and just want to put a stop to the deer invasions for good. I’m hoping just a single electrified wire run along the existing poly fence will keep them from crashing/tearing the fence. I saw a young doe on my Ring camera this morning. She crashed the fence around 4:30 am, walked around and ate a huge breakfast of our plants, and hopped back out at exactly the same place where she ripped the fence to get it. Help!!
I found a natural product that keeps deers away from my garden. It's wonderful stuff and works great. Been using it for a few years now and love it. It's. Called Deer No No.
Hi, Great Video. I dont understand your comment about connecting the three strands of wire. Is it that the strands are only connected to each other on the start post, and then end on the final post.? Thanks
Love the videos. I also have a critter problem on my garden. Deer and rabbits eat the whole salad bar. So I use the chicken mesh fence for bottom 2 wires then the 54" and the single outer 18" .
I've used a system like this before to amazing results. One question though- what is your solution to allow for an opening to drive through or otherwise access your plots? Do you make some kind of gate? or do you just let the polywire down and drive over?
my observation is if that top wire is at 54 inches Mrs Stoney ridge is not very tall :) maybe 5 ft thanks for the video and being from iowa that fence does work to keep deer out
For nearly 30 years now my dad has kept deer out of the garden with an electric fence with a wire at 18" and another at 36". The deer might tear it down a time or two but they'll stay out.
If you leave any of the spade of a t post exposed above the ground keep all rubber tires away from the base of the post. That will ruin the toughest tractor tire. Trust me. I recommend driving them all the way in.
They also make a 10' T-post, (I found them locally at Tractor Supply). Because the weight and wind load on poly line is so light, you only need to drive them to the bottom quarter of the spade, (at least in my soil), so you still have nearly 9' of above ground height on the top line which seems to be plenty.
My husband is an old school Southern gentleman. He would never allow me to do mans work as he calls it. I have however shot some deer in my time. Nice video.
Could you put down a strip of Agri fabric before putting the fence post in to save the weed eating,or would the Agri fabric ground the electrical current?
Got away with the garden with no fence and watched the deer eat the neighbors garden. Planting lettuce this year so going to try your fence. Nice video. Thanks
I put 4 of the t stakes around my fruit trees and 2 ropes around for the deer here. The 400 pound bucks here jump 8 foot fence with no problem. Did buy 4 of those repeller's for my garden and seems to be working so far.
Awesome!! Wish I had seen your video 2 years ago. We planted 360 berry bushes, put the mats down, put the tree tubes on them. I watered them weekly the first summer when we had a drought and they flourished! last year they were standing 6 to 7 feet tall... then in the course of maybe 2 weeks, every one of them got their tops eaten off right to the tops of the tree tubes. I don't know if they will survive, time will tell this spring. However, I am going to try your fence!! Too much time and money put in for the deer to devour them before they even have a chance of survival. Funny thing is, there are only about 4 or 5 deer left in our area due to logging and wolves... so they did a hefty amount of damage in just a few nights.
It's coming along.....the fence was a bit too late...darn deer ate all but one plum....every other piece of fruit is gone!!!..So frustrating but it's my fault
Nice set up. Speaking from experience in my area the best thing we've used was a single strand of that poly wire but bigger diameter around garden and that's it. Set it high enough to where they can kinda duck under (at least in my area deer rather go under than jump ) that way their ears neck or back will touch get a pop and they are gone they don't even try to jump it after that.
Josh: how has your deer fence held up the past two years? any changes or modifications? I'm getting ready to install on myself. Also have the option of going solar or house current 100. Your recommendation? thx. Geo
I have heard you can put t post in the ground and put fishing line between them I have taken it a step further and have bought 30 lb test Cajun red colored fishing line that is extremely hard to see apparently the deer run into it and they back up they get confused because they can't see it but they will not jump into something when they are so unsure and this will do the same thing. About 6 in off of the ground I'm going to run a electric wire for smaller critters like rabbits and I'll be sure to keep it trimmed low to the ground. Going to try it this spring.
I think you'd be better off just building the fence like this...you can re-use the materials year after year...the line close to the ground for "little critters" simply won't work my friend...you'd be hard pressed to fence out squirrels, rabbits, mice, rats and chipmunks. If you have a garden...you have mice for sure! This does work for deer...I think putting up fishing line is asking for a clog under your mower or weed whacker my brotha
We set up a 3d fence few weeks ago. Our deer pressure is so high that the deer keep trying to go through the electric fence. I've heard them scream when they hit it and get zapped, and they've knocked the lines down, bent u-posts, and broken insulator clips three times now.
Thanks Josh, great video and I learned alot. In the process of putting up my fencing and I will have an area designated for our garden which will include all types of vegetables and the building of our grape arbor. I have an abundance of wildlife on my property and I don't plan to feed them after all of my hard work and sweat. Please keep up the great work on your land and keep the excellent video's rolling.
Hi Josh - what about grounding rods? Also - the first post where you run vertically/from top to bottom of t-post to tie in your strands - how do you attach h the rest to that? Is it one continuous or 3 separate strands all connecting back to your vertical? Thanks for your help/video
yep, you can ground it to a post or a ground rod, just run your strands and connect them all by running a wire up the post to connect all the strands of poly electric. It will make more sense once you've built this my friend...super super simple.....I also connect all the wires in 2 or 3 places by running wire up the insulators vertically that way we're getting juice to the entire fence. Again...when ya build this it will be super simple to ya. I caution you on the ground rod....if you're gonna use a ground rod be sure you drive it in a place that you can leave it permanent and not hit with the mower or trip over in the future
There is only ONE surefire way to keep deer out of the garden . . . you need the right dog with the right ATTITUDE ! My Australian shepard was a stellar example.
Deer and the critters that want to eat your garden are like people, summer smardt, summer knot😀. You might try twisting pieces of aluminum foil around the hot wire(when off), and putting peanut butter on. This educates the deer very quickly, when they touch with their tongue. Sometimes you might want to keep the ground damp around a fence, increases the severity of the shock. Mark the fence wire with white cloth tied to it, then they’ll easily know where the wire is. Spray the plants with liquid sevin from a spray tank, they won’t eat them and will keep bugs off. Homemade sprays such as hot pepper spray work well also. I’ve seen deer jump through that 18” gap without touching anything. Set up a game camera for fun and watch what they do!😀 The point is,educate the deer early in the garden season, and they may just stay away!
Iv heard of this before a bunch of times never seen if it worked tho but I’m sure it does! Iv seen that people put string around there garden too just asked someone how it worked
Thanks for the video. About how far did you space your T posts? Did they seem sturdy enough without having wooden posts for corners and gates? I hope you have a great spring!
I have needed this idea forever!! Every year I try yet another idea to keep deer away and every year they beat that idea and eat everything they can get their mouth on
This works my friend...it's worked for us for several years now..lighting also helps and making the fence electric for a while helps too....last year we never hooked power to it!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer my hubby isn't happy seeing his hubby do list for the weekend but jeesh the deer are decimating my plants. They even started feeding on my hostas last year, that was the only plant they hadn't touched in all the years here. I've tried everything short of filling up my freezer with them.
not to be sarcastic...but how is a fence that's 18 inches off the ground gonna keep out small animals my friend? It's not buddy...you need a lower wire to accomplish that
I've used this method before to outstanding results- but your method is definitely an improved version imo. Quick question, though- how far apart are you spacing your Tposts?
2 rows of fence...36 inches apart.....first row has 1 strand at 18 iches...second row 18, 36,54 inches respectively. You are creating an electrified 3 dimensional wall that deer cannot navigate
How do people justify growing their own garden, when you have the great number of hours involved, cost of equipment, repairs , fuel, sunburn, insect bites. When you may get a crop, might not! Putting up, storing, canning , freezing your produce-giving it to people that may or may not want it! Just something to think about as I carry my hoe to MY garden, and loving every minute of it! 😎⛈😷🌈
Great video. I've heard of this before but wasn't sure of the details. I put in about a half acre garden this year (2022) and put this fence around it; however, I have yet to put the electricity to it. And I am also keeping a game camera on it to see what "challenges" the fence. There were 2 deer in the garden about 2 weeks after the fence was up. I'm not sure if they jumped it or crawled under - I'd suspect they crawled under, but I couldn't find any sign to such. Any thoughts?...
New to your channel this is a great video. Very informative will have to give this a try very soon. We have a lot of deer on our property too. Thanks for sharing.
So...what did you do when you got to the last post??? Cut it and that's that or attach to the 1st post? And what is the point of that synthetic smaller post?? Lol sorry, I'm so new to this and trying to find a video that gives exact step by step instructions lol
you just need to ensure all the wires are in contact with oneanother...you don't have to have a complete loop..make sure your wires are not touching ground (aka metal fence posts) just tie it off at the end
Nobel! Nobel! Nobel! Forgot about you doing this couple years ago. This video was much more informative. What a great idea. Is power run separately from inner and outer? If not, how do you tie them in?
Looks good. I've just got 5 ft chicken wire on mine. Seems to work though. One thing I did is tie pie pans along the perimeter of the fence so they flop in the wind. No deer in the garden yet, and boy do I have the deer! I'm going to do a setup like this one day though.

Again...when ya build this it will be super simple to ya. I caution you on the ground rod....if you're gonna use a ground rod be sure you drive it in a place that you can leave it permanent and not hit with the mower or trip over in the future
Yes please show us your entry point. Great video!
Hi..... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
There is only ONE surefire way to keep deer out of the garden . . . you need the right dog with the right ATTITUDE ! My Australian shepard was a stellar example.
Thanks for the tip on the fence and the source material.
This is a dead link- " Solar Animal Repeller" which brand have you used/ recommend?
Was Josh talkin??? Lovin the Mrs Stoney Ridge Vanna routine. lol
Love it man!! What a great idea on a fence
Mrs Stoney Ridge is coming out of her shell, maybe next video she can speak? Love all your videos.
great idea and we know you like to talk but let that little lady have a chance every now and then
Great job and awesome looking shirt!! Keep up the good work.
We did the same fence configuration for our tomato pasture. What a difference it makes. . Love the idea josh
Clever...thanks for the information. Your place is look’n good.
What did you do about a door or entrance to the garden for equipment?
just loosen the wire, drive right over or make yourself a little gate
I Love the Rooster !!!!
Iv heard of this before a bunch of times never seen if it worked tho but I’m sure it does! Iv seen that people put string around there garden too just asked someone how it worked
Thanks for sharing all of the great ideas.
You should put out a game camera and get footage of the deer encountering the fence
Great Video as usual Josh!!!
Thanks for the video. About how far did you space your T posts? Did they seem sturdy enough without having wooden posts for corners and gates? I hope you have a great spring!
I wanted to know this as well
Um, they sell 10 ft T posts. Does "get the tallest post you can get" remain you advice? T-post pounding atop a ladder?
one thing is for sure, sarcasm won't keep them out 😂👍😉
I have needed this idea forever!!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Oh and need to add they have now began jumping our fenced in backyard.. So any ideas on how to fix that issue??
Wow ! Thanks a lot ! Great idea and very advanced as well as simple! 👍🏼
Doable even for a senior ! 😉
Just subscribed 🤗
I LOVE your flag!
Good team work!
Exactly what I needed to see! Thanks y’all. -Mongo
Hi wondering what you use for spacing on posts and if this protects from rabbits and other little four legged creatures too?
not to be sarcastic...but how is a fence that's 18 inches off the ground gonna keep out small animals my friend? It's not buddy...you need a lower wire to accomplish that
Great Video ! I'm getting ready to install this. Are you still good with this design or what should I do differently ?
I love it
I love you guys man
I've used this method before to outstanding results- but your method is definitely an improved version imo. Quick question, though- how far apart are you spacing your Tposts?
as far as I can without having lots of sag in the wire
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer hahaha got it. Literally at tractor supply now. Thank you so much!
On the outside fence could you also put another line at 30" besides the one at 18"?
2 rows of fence...36 inches apart.....first row has 1 strand at 18 iches...second row 18, 36,54 inches respectively. You are creating an electrified 3 dimensional wall that deer cannot navigate
Interesting. Makes sense
Excellent idea for the fence and i did order some of them razors so ill let you know how they do for me.
Looking at doing the same thing.
It’s looking good y’all
Going to try this, thanks!
great video! 2nd best one ive seen but you have the best technical info
Any thoughts?...
put power to the fence or it won't work...eventually they'll just run through it.....you must have a fence charger on it
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer this seems to be the key to it. Without electricity they just force their way through
Nice garden good job
New to your channel this is a great video. Very informative will have to give this a try very soon. We have a lot of deer on our property too. Thanks for sharing.
Starts at 2:30
Great job
I'm going to start a garden soon, your idea is great. But I have one question, how does it work for rabbits and possibly chickens to keep out
doesn't work for rabbits...check out premier one fencing and get some deer and predator fence
Really a good job on your video. Not a lot of unrelated BS like you see on some other videos. Thanks.
Nice fence
I only use a 2 strand electric fence and have no deer issues yet plenty of deer
lol...then why are ya looking at deer prevention vids? This works...all I can tell ya my friend
Have you got one of those The Price is Right models behind you there?
Hey Stoney how far apart did you put your t-post?
Everything is looking good man !
Did you electrify the fence? If so, how did you set up the charger?
Link to the solar animal repellent in your description isn’t working do you have the make and model ?
Looks good. I've just got 5 ft chicken wire on mine. Seems to work though. One thing I did is tie pie pans along the perimeter of the fence so they flop in the wind. No deer in the garden yet, and boy do I have the deer! I'm going to do a setup like this one day though.
It works for sure...btw love you youtube photo Jeremiah Johnson!! RAD!!
Probably my favorite movie and character of all time. They were a different breed of people back then for sure.
Lmao. Big man with a beard selling razors. Nice!
Kind of ridiculous, right?
