I enjoyed the Amos and Andy program when I was a child when it was on radio and later on as a young adult when it was on television. I never saw it as anything but a comedian a comedy movie nothing more and nothing less.

They lived well despite Kingfish not working, Andy always wore a suit as well as the Kingfish and the rest of the cast was always well dressed. I guess it was because I was little and we listened to the radio at first. But as time went on my Dad would make his little girl laugh and laugh, imitating The King Fish. What I know very well is that my Father was not racist or making fun of The King Fish. Also he did not raise a racist daughter. We also enjoyed George Burns and Gracie Allen. And neither of us thought she was simple minded. All these people enjoyed doing was making people of all age have a fun time. The whole family could watch these shows. We need more of them in today’s world.

Very funny show. I remember when I was a paperboy and I would collect money from my customers. It seemed like I was always collecting around the time this show was on. Just about every house I went to would have it playing. Many of them would let me sit inside while they got the money ready. I would watch it and think to myself, "I wish I was home so I could watch the whole show." They were forced to take it off the air because it was supposedly disrespectful of African Americans. I suppose it is a little bit, but not as much as many shows since then that ran forever and were not nearly as funny. The people always dressed nice, many had great jobs, all had nice houses, and they faced situations everyone faces in daily life. It was very funny. I read on the internet that the actors and actresses were very upset that it was taken off the air by force, by other black folks, some of them never worked again in movies and TV. Most of them had accomplished a lot in private life before being on TV.

Hello, really enjoyed most of your comment.
However, I wish part of the blame for what happened to A&A could be laid at the feet of those who were in control of the NAACP at that time. If you don't know or you are not sure you can read it online.
I, as a preteen girl, also had a paper route. What fun it was..... a lot of snow, ice and cold weather.. The papers were in a paper bag hanging onto the handlebars and I had to push the bicycle around because it could not be ridden through the snow. I was glad to get rid of that paper route. Smile!!!
We did get a TV in 1951 but I don't remember ever seeing A&A on TV. It just seems I remember hearing about it.

It was one of the most beloved radio shows in America. When people were shopping the stores would play it over the loudspeakers. It was well-written and done with love, albeit with racial tones common to that era, and it lasted for decades. You people need to stop judging the past with modern sensibilities.

But all 1950s comedy - Lucille Ball, the Honeymooners, Burns and Allen, Phil Silvers, etc., - were all about either people acting stupidly, or getting screwed trying to scam others. That said, my father sat me down and gave me plenty of examples, some of them personal, of difficulties that non White Anglo Saxon Protestant adults faced in their lives at that point in time. Unfortunately, in taking a critical eye to this show, none of the adults who watched it are around to share their thoughts about it now.
