Anita Bryant was an evil, draconian witch who wanted to prevent homosexuals from moving into and improving her neighborhood in Florida, where this TV show is set. She had once been thought to be beautiful and was given the title of Miss America, so she had some notoriety and gained some media attention. It was long ago and I think she failed, so she really isn't relevant any more, but if you piss off a queen, we are never going to forget it.
@MrSebboxxx Tbh it's actually not. When you're watching singular clips such as this, it's funny. However, when I've found that when you watch the episodes in full, the humour is very dated. Me and my mother (who was a hardcore Golden Girls fan with her mother, sister and friend, who would all watch episodes on repeat) has admitted that she doesn't find it funny anymore because of how dated the humour feels.
And it happened so many times. Remember Sophia and her balloon after buying shoes? Blanche pops the balloon and all three of them don't even crack a smile. They were consummate professionals.
@@graperonto Rue would always pinch the bridge of her nose to keep from laughing note how she does that in. balloon scene in this scene I imagine it's why they could keep the camera on them only for a certain period of time
Jean Kennedy. I am gay and I don't like the stereotyping, BUT, this character is real. Not all gay men are like that but there are enough that are. So I don't mind the humor in this at all. This is practically the only type of gay person who could stand up to Dorothy. Why not just enjoy the humor for humors sake.
Jean Kennedy, I totally get you and agree with a lot of what you are saying. But let's be real, not all gay men are like your friends and you shouldn't be so judgmental of those who are not and be so judgmental of the portrayals of those gay queens who are camp. They exist and have a right to exist the way they choose to act. So if the enactment of this type of gay person shows up in a show, it definitely is NOT unreal. Neither does that mean that the person in the role is a model representative of the group as a whole. Yet I can't help but believe that they are just as sincere in who they are as the non-flamboyant man who loves another man. Biggots are going to judge queens as harshly as they do masculine homosexuals, if they are not open minded. I am 67 years old and am gay, and not at all flamboyant. i have found that true biggots couldn't care less if I am not. I have lost the friendship of many people who treated me decently when they found out I was a homosexual. To them I was a "homo" regardless of how I acted. So at my stage in life I just don't sweat it, and I laughed my ass off when I saw this scene, NOT because of the gay man but how he tamed Dorothy. That very rarely happened on the show. By the way, have you seen the movie "When I'm 64"? If you haven't, try to see it. It can be watched free on youtube.
Missed opportunity: a spin-off show after Bea left the Golden Girls, featuring her and this hilarious caterer as neighbors trying to outsass each other on a daily basis. OMG. Imagine the comeback lines I can bring with me the following day to work.
Yes this guy was very funny!!! When he challenges Dorothy LOL also when he calls Blanche Anita Bryant what a hoot!! Younger audience probably didn't understand, though!
Is it possible to still HONOR the writers of this amazing brilliant fabulous show!!! If so please send them a Cart Load of Oscars and Emmys !!! They truly still deserve it !!!
Absolutely hilarious! I replay it many times every time I am here. And I am here many times...believe me! This is the only guy who faced up to Dorothy and lived to tell the tale! Absolutely brilliant screen play and acting!
Oh my gosh! How many times have I laughed out loud at this scene. Back then and now. I love that guy! He's absolutely hilarious, and I wish he could have had some kind of recurring role on the show. I wonder what happened to him, and why we didn't see more of him in other roles.
I love how Dorothy was ready to say something when he mentioned his marriage but quickly shut her up by saying “if you say something smart I’ll slap you silly.”
Sebastian Wendel omg i watched the secind part of this movie yesterday and yes i think so too. Franck was too cute haha 😂 your comment was 11 months ago, how are you now!!?
Sebastian Wendel yes, the father is always very confused in the whole movie, the best part was when he faints the moment the doctor tells him that his wife is pregnant😂😂😂
The caterer deserves an Emmy! "Listen here, stretch..." And it appeared Rue could barely keep a "straight" face when he said, "Well, excuse me for living, Anita Bryant!"
Dam! I miss the Golden Girls. There will probably never be another show like this again. Everyone one of these actresses on this show were just brilliant.
That guy has been in pretty much every sitcom I’ve ever watched. He played the school headmaster on the Judd Hirsch show ‘Dear John’ which ran from 1988-1992.
I didn't get the joke when I was younger, I just thought it was funny because somebody, beat Dorothy at being quick witted. But now as an adult and realizing he was gay, makes it 10 times funnier!
Lmao! Man they just don't make stuff like this anymore! I don't laugh out loud at a lot of comedies but Golden Girls, Sanford and Son, Frasier, Married with Children, The Nanny, Martin, The Jeffersons, All In The Family, The Andy Griffith Show and Everybody Loves Raymond never fail to get me going!
Never had a chance to see it at its original timing, but watching it everyday now, God they are funny, no show can match them. Wish I could have met them in person. RIP❤❤
I always wished the show had gone on longer, but then I think of what a high note they left on. None of the characters ever got over the top and none of the story lines got old. Season six was a little off, but then seven came roaring in. It's easy to see why this show is still such a classic.
Damn, the Golden Girls were simply that--GOLDEN!! I really must get rid of cable; I haven't watched T.V. in over 7 months. Am holding out for the figure skating season, but even these competitions are going down hill. And the rest of T.V. fare today is sheer tripe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was the best
And Dorothy’s response expression to the ‘Stretch’ comment was hilarious.

Thanks. When I first herd the joke, I thought Anita Bryant was some sort of conservative journalist or a some old Joan Crawford-ish actress.
Well, you're pretty close, she's just less important.
