The song is "On the Franches Mountains" by the Jura Orchestra. I get it stuck too... so I play it on repeat and sing along until my wife wants to kill me, the dogs are scared of me, and my teenage daughters look at me like I have three heads. 🤣
They just do all that crap to entice you to watch it… It’s done on all kinds of videos on UA-cam… People lie about what’s actually on the video and just put something enticing in the title to get you to watch it
Except that last one @16:53 where she said 45 for the coffee maker and the answer was 30, but the guy only moved 5 steps instead of 15 steps... she should have lost, but he didn't catch the mistake....so i wouldn't say "always"
Still my favorite game. If they had gone back to 1981, we could've seen one of the craziest Cliffhangers ever played. It can be found here by searching "greatest cliffhangers".
I was hoping for the one when the climber fell on the first try. I was watching that one when I was a few years old, in the early 1980s. That was always my favorite game when I was little because if they win, you get to see them win, but if they lose, you get to see the climber fall. I remember the time the climber fell on the first try, and I loved it! Bob said he doesn't think that has happened before. I wish I could find that clip. By the way, my mom watched The Price Is Right when I was a baby, and my first spoken words were "Bob Barker", said stretched out like his introductions at the beginning of the episodes.
I found it hilarious after he explains it and hints that she should probably round her figure to $27 or $28 and she decides to then bid $32. Lol Mugged him off ha ha
Or 20/30/40. Seriously, if I played this game live, I would make big bucks through the prizes alone. Cliffhangers, Clock Game, Ten Chances, and Range Game are embarrassing to lose if you don't know the unwritten rules (same with Safe Crackers, but knowing the zero rule gives you a 50% chance of winning, and Shell Game only gives you a 100% chance of winning if you know prices).
Nothing will compare to the episode in 1976 with guest host Dennis James. He decided the climbers name was Fritz. Model Janice was married to Fritz Stammberger who had disappeared mountain climbing in Afghanistan the year before. When the contestant lost, he commented, "There goes Fritz!" Janice ran off the stage in tears.
Dennis James wasn't aware of this until after the episode was over when he saw Janice backstage still crying and wailing which prompted him to say "Honey, what's wrong?" as announcer Johnny Olson, producer Mark Goodson and several production members came over to comfort her during that difficult time. Holly Hallstrom, who hasn't been on the show yet, would be her "cuddly toy" during her traumatic period.
She wrote a book about it. Husband, Lover, Spy. It claimed he was recruited by the CIA to work with the mujahideen and died sometime in the early 80s when the Soviets invaded.
4:32 I think the prices of the small prizes in Cliff Hangers are always progressively more expensive (unlike Spelling Bee). so it's extra annoying when they guess the second or third prizes are less expensive than the previous prize.
They didn't have the clip on here where the contestant got every single prize right and the mountain climber didn't move at all. That has happened before.
John Olsen was always my favorite speaker/announcer! Rod Roddy being the second for me. R.I.P. to both of them and of course, Bob Barker himself, the BEST host! We will NEVER forget you all!
When you're sick from school in the 80's this is what was on t.v.. Even if the t.v. was turned off it would turn itself back on and play this while you were on the couch.
Dennis James actually called him Fritz, who was unaware that Janice Pennington’s husband had disappeared while mountain climbing in Afghanistan. She ran back stage crying and did not appear on camera for the remainder of the episode.
Drew Carey named him Cliff. In the earliest episodes, Bob Barker named him Hans while Dennis James chose the name Fritz. Immediately following the Fritz controversy, he was simply known as the mountain climber.
Not much from what I saw other than the contestant, in the first one, bidding in dollars and cents at one point. This, I bet, was just an excuse to throw a compilation together.
On that last clip they spotted her ten extra steps. She guesses $45 for the coffee pot. Actual price is $30. The climber moves from 7 to 12. I guess Gina was having another “not one of her best days.”
I miss the decade of the 80s so much and the game shows that used to come on during those years along with the TV shows and movies and just the overall positive outlook of life and our country and now with every crazy thing going on it’s so depressing that’s good times seems so far away so
The past always seems better than the present because we block negative memories. Keep in mind people were expecting a nuclear war any day for much of the 80s. Admittedly it's still possible but back then it was becoming almost certain.
It’s mechanically, with someone backstage pressing the buttons for the mountain climber to make the corresponding number of steps. It’s not like a hand crank.

Cliffhanger was always my favourite game. Not gonna lie, it was because of the yodelling. Slightly different yodelling tune here in the UK though. Still sing it to myself every so often.
@@jamesmcclelland1414 shh But, yes, I would like to see that. Not sure how often it happened during this era but there were some good ones from the 90s.
That last contestant actually lost. They stopped the mountain climber 10 steps short (should have been on 22) on the second prize and nobody pointed that out.
That's what I was thinking. However, standards and practices on the show state that any mistake on the show's part results in an automatic win for the contestant, regardless of the actual result. We saw that with the malfunction in the third clip.
I remember near the later years of Bob's tenure hearing "That's a STUPID mountain climber!" And then he dragged the operator guy out from behind to put him on blast for miscounting and causing the climber to step over 25. I loved it when old Bob was fed up with these games ever going wrong!
There was one playing from a January 1989 episode in which a contestant from Japan who sleeps during the Price Is Right played Cliff Hangers who was way off on the second item that he only had a couple steps away before the mountain climber falls off the cliff on the final item. Well, he fell off prompting Bob Barker to mention that "Confucius said not good to sleep during Price Is Right". That statement was funny as h**l!
My favorite was I think during the 90s or early 2000s when the first item was a cheap little toy guitar for kids. It cost like $15 but the guy playing guessed an outrageous price like $1000 as though it was a real professional guitar. Bob actually bent the rules and gave him two chances to guess again then when the contestant stuck with his obviously wrong guess Bob seemed legitimately annoyed telling the producers to hurry up and get the guy up the mountain so the show could move on.
I think early 80s you could get away with $15, $25, $40, late 80s to early 90s you could win with $20, $35, $40, and now you can win with $25, $35, $50. (this is if you don't look at the prizes and just say those prices right away).
The music from this game was stuck in my head for 40 years. Went away, now I find this UA-cam channel. And it's back.
