A handy substitute for the turnbuckle is a racheting fence tensioner used for high tensile fencing. Also putting some type of covering, either a flashing or asphaltic coating on the tops of posts will help them keep from splitting from the top over time.

On our farm, we’d soak our corner posts in used engine oil, diesel fuel and creosote for2 weeks in a 55 gallon drum.
That was about 40 years ago. I went by my dad’s old farm a few years ago and those corner posts were still in the ground, just like the day we put them in the ground.

Looks like a stout trellis, interesting that you did all the additional bracing for such a short run, but then only used 12 ga wire. Any particular reason other than its harder to work with?

Thanks. Grapes can be extremely heavy. Having a strong trellis on any size run is important. The tensile strength of 12 gauge far exceeds any force the grapes can put on it. No need to use anything bigger.
