We use an electric LooftLiter to quickly ignite a small pile of lump in the center-top of the pile, and then just let the dome start heat soaking as the cooker comes up to temp. When the cooker is ready to receive the food, the dome is plenty hot.
@@chris_favreau , I've had mine for about eight years, using it several times each week. When it does finally break, I believe it will be replaced with a Grill Blazer.
I think the thing that vent management is probably the absolute number one tip you can get when starting with either a #kamadojoe or even just a simple Weber kettle grill. I know it's something I've struggled with and it's a bit surprising how hard it is to find a good answer when you're brand new to the game. Thanks for helping with these #6mistakes. Always insightful and well stated.
It takes about 10-15 cooks to learn how to handle a kamado. For both low and slow and hot and fast and 2 zone cooking. Was quicker for me as I had a lot of experience with fire management. Anyone can get it figured out pretty fast. Pro tip: don’t over shoot your temp and go slow. Nice video Jake, you are spot on 100% with everything you said.
Starting a KJ, I use a KJstarter cube and once the coal shows some ember, grab my batter powered leaf blower, slight squeeze of the trigger…will quickly move the coals into a good burn and I can then begin the process of stabilizing the temp about 5 minutes after lighting the starter cube #kamadojoe #6mistakes
The adapter works great. I use the smaller tanks for the grill on my boat and also for my flybridge heater so it really does cut down on the bottle waste and is much less expensive.
Great video and well presented. I do think it is usually best to spend money on quality. However, I did go to Harbor Freight Tools and bought a weed burner for $25 that does the does the same job as the more expensive lighters. Had a bit of a cheap weld for the halo thing, but still works well. Makes me feel a bit more manly and I get a little more exercise carrying out the propane tank and using a wrench to attach the hose. I always use sunglasses and a protective glove when using it to light my charcoal. Really helps speed things up for a cook when I come home from work.
Never owned or cooked in a #kamadojoe but your tips to avoid ruining a cook are great ones. I do have a gravity feed smoker and good quality charcoal is critical, 100% agree! #6mistakes
Perfectly timed video for me Jake, my Kamado Joe Classic III is arriving tomorrow!!! Super excited to get cooking on my new #kamadojoe and hope to avoid these #6mistakes
Great info. I've got the Akorn kamado which is owned by #kamadojoe and have made many of the #6mistakes you talked about. The trickiest thing was getting it dialed in. Once I figured out to use micro adjustments to the dial and give it about 10-15 minutes, it's been all good. I also didn't let it get heat soaked at first and led me chasing temps for a while. Great tips, hope they help someone not make the same mistakes.
Great video! I overshot my temp big time during my first cook on my BJ3. Almost ruined a prime rib!. Lesson learned though, I haven't done it since! #kamadojoe #6mistakes
I'm using a Big Green Egg with the Fireboard pro and the aux fan. Will see how it works as I just got the fan. Wanted to get the #kamadojoe but could not find a local dealer that had one in stock. I am been watching your videos for about a month now. Very good content. Hopefully after watching this one, I'll skip over the #6mistakes.
Ok so say I am shooting for 250 degrees. The thermometer says I’m there but the dome still isn’t heat soaked. Let’s assume at this point things are still wide open on top and bottom vents. What do I do? Start closing down? Or wait til fully soaked the close it down.
I generally will shut it down around 250-275 and let it get heat soaked. Shutting the vent down to target settings slows airflow and helps it heat soak quicker. 🍻
Ok so don’t overshoot the temp on the dome thermometer basically. Stop there, tighten it up, let the dome soak then start cooking. Thanks a bunch. Btw you are the first person I’ve seen saying to only adjust heat with the top vent. Love the simplicity of that idea. Excited to try that out!
Yeah you can blow by it a bit, but it’s tough to get it back down if you go too high for too long. If it shoots up 50F+ and you catch it, you can bring it back down no problem before it’s heat soaked. Thanks! 🍻
#kamadojoe #6mistakes. This was a great video with nothing but great advice..I think this is one reason you see so many Kamados for sale, people don’t take the time to understand them and how they cook. Will be very happy when I can move up to a big joe for the extra space. Meanwhile I’ll keep firing the Vision.
I got a Kamado Joe from a retailer who had it completely assembled. I couldn't transport it home completely assembled so I had to do some disassemble. Being a newbie I took off all 12 nuts on the back holding the hinge assembly on and had to open the lid to remove the hinge. I got that off, put it in the car, and got everything to where I now want to reassemble. Problem, reinstalling the hinge from an open position (no zip ties holding it closed and no spacer, washer and nut locking the spring closed. I guess I have to somehow compress the hinge and get the spacer, washer and nut on so I can reinstall the hinge. Is that correct?
I'm a woodworker and have multiple Bessey K clamps. I used two on either side of the bolt that I should have put the spacer, washer, and nut on. I squeezed the clamp into submission and compressed enough to get the spacer, washer and nut on. I then removed the clamps, tightened the nut further and reinstalled the hinge back on the grill bottom, put the top on the bottom and reattached all 12 washers and nuts. Had to do minor realigning of the top. Torqued the 12 nuts to about 6 or 7 lbs each and I don't think any are going to come loose. I'll check by hand from time to time. I then removed the nut, washer, and nut. Then I had to readjust the spring load on the lid. Everything is now good to go. American Ingenuity. MAGA
I'm was amazed that ppl buy smoke wood. But then I realized that not everyone lives in the country. Within a short walk from my house I can get pecan, oak, hickory and some fruit wood. I've been using plum from my fruit tree pruning here lately. Works well for me.
I tried to find an adapter for that, but I couldn’t find one. They used to make a refillable 1 pound but it’s always out of stock when I have looked. 🍻
Great tips but unfortunately I do not have one 😢. Maybe one day I’ll add a toy and it would be a nice change to get that flavor from the lump. #kamadojoe #6mistakes

Yeah the slower it comes up to temp, the hotter the dome will be. When using a GrillGun it’s hot quick but not heat soaked. 🍻
I actually just reviewed one on home Depot... It failed me after a few months... So disappointed

For a long time you had a Komodo Kamado - which is what I own. Why did you switch to the Kamado Joe? Is there a problem with the Komodo Kamado?
Nothing wrong with a KK. I switched back to a KJ because the audience is significantly larger and I wanted to be able to help a broader audience. 🍻

They don’t burn nearly as hot or as long. Lump is way better. 🍻
