AreYouDavid? Im all for encouraging younger people to learn more about history, but i feel that having gore would have helped set the overall tone and atmosphere of the soldiers peril for staying on that beach.
It's easy to look back on ww2, 70 years later, safe at home, knowing that the allies won. But imagine living in that moment, how real it would have been, those sinking ships had real people in them, with families, children. They would have killed for a way out. That's the use of a sound technique called the shepard tone, an infinitely rising tone. Endless tension. It's use in this score is very subtle, although everything is composed around it. Zimmer's a genius basically
Everyone I was around did. The theater had its volume almost too high for my tastes, and that's what made it so effective. One of the great things about Dunkirk is it doesn't mute the most important sounds. Guns and planes in real life are extremely loud, and many movies ignore that. The sound of the gunshots in Dunkirk, the screeching roar of the Stukas, the explosions, every sound that meant the end of someone's life was taking place was shocking and terrifying.
The legends say Nolan was sitting in his chair in a dark room writing the script, thinking about the narratives, perspectives to tell the story of Dunkirk, and as he was doing so, he heard a old pocket watch ticking. Tick tock. He recorded that menacing ticking. A ticking time. A fundamental effect in everyone's faith. A simple tick tock. Time. And gave the recording to Zimmer. And as they say, the rest is history.
Not really true, because this ticking sound was already one of the focal points of Interstellar. Dunkirk is like that Interstellar docking scene on steroids. Plus time was also a very large factor in Inception. So yeah, this is not something he suddenly unearthed for Dunkirk.

The three stories are told in different periods of time, during the movie they show you what happened the last week on the beach before the evacuation, the last day on the boat and the last our for the pilots, like Inception where 10 seconds in the first level were 2 minutes in the second and 1 hour in the third
Yes, and in May 2020, some spoiled brats don't want to wear a mask inside a building for 15 minutes, if that. They consider themselves "freedom fighters." 😖
My friend told me he felt like he needed to go watch a Disney movie after watching Mad Max: Fury Road. I told him to not even think about watching Dunkirk then unless he has a pacemaker and oxygen mask. This movie was incredible I have never seen a movie at the theater where the entire audience was silent.
I think he will Win it next year. They tend to give it to director's who make great immersive movies like Gravity, The Revenant, Life of Pi and Birdman. Nolan has it in the bag
Steven Spielberg made some of the most iconic movies of all time, and broke the record for highest grossing film three times before winning Best Director. He also significantly changed and grew as a director during that time, whereas Nolan hasn't changed or shown much flexibility. I suspect that after a while, he _will_ win Best Director, but only after his filmography has shown a significant amount of range. If I were to predict when he will win an Oscar, I'm guessing that it will be in ten to fifteen years. I could be entirely wrong, but that's how it seems to me.
Haven't seen this movie yet and will be at least my third favorite movie. Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk = The Nolan and Zimmer combo. Masterpiece trilogy.
Super hero movies don't really hit the mark of being interesting and challenging. I couldn't really see the director behind the camera crew in Dark Knight like I could with Inception and Interstellar Also the music in Dark Knight can't beat the music of neither.
Obviously this is slightly onto the genre debate, but my opinion is that superhero movies have lot less of cinematic value compared to sci-fi or drama/thriller. To me super hero movies are just cheap cash in to really good comics. Not much else. I just personally can't respect them.
If you listen closely at 0:50, you can hear bits of Variations 15, the soundtrack that is played when the small boats finally arrive. It reminds me of how the kick sound is actually the slowed down version of je ne regrette nien.
Dunkirk is Nolan's greatest film. It's not a war film, it's a survival thriller. It's the cinematic equivalent of the poem of war was told through heart attacks.
This film and 1917 were probably the 2 most incredible cinematic experiences I’ve had in the last few years. I will forever be thankful that I saw both in imax and regretful that I didn’t see interstellar in IMAX.
Hans Zimmer has created such a gritty soundtrack that it boosts the action and your heart will race throughout. Love his scores. Beautifully crafted and executed.
The clock ticking is so nice, there’s a lot of different meanings you could theorise behind it but I think it means that their days are numbered. Eerie
I saw this masterpiece today in IMAX, and I can say with absolute certainty that this is the most intense movie I've ever seen, and I believe this may be my favorite movie of all time. It is very unique in the way the storyline flows, little dialogue and not really a focus character, but somehow this film still manages to get the point across that this was hell. It was terrifying; you dreaded the sound of an approaching plane; you were messed up by the constant sound of bombs exploding. This film is very special, and I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me to see it. To add, I was actually mentally and physically exhausted after watching this film because the adrenaline was flowing through my body the entire time.
Nolan and Hans Zimmer are just bunch of geniuses. How can they make a PG13 war film that intense and pretty scary? Heart-pumping and chills throughout the movie man...
We were gifted with one of the best cinematic war movie ever. The movie has no real character focus just purely on the actual events that's happening on the evacuation. I don't thinkk anybody has ever seen this type of war movie before so this is quite original.
Never been so much on the edge of my seat for a movie, watching this it felt like I was there in the movie... The sound when the spitfire's came across, once again a masterpiece by Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer with the perfect fitting music. One of my favorite movie's I have ever seen.
2:50 Very clever sound design resembling that of a propeller rotating. You can also notice the 'whoosh' sound that modern jets have, but it didn't exist in that era (more like a lawnmower going overhead)
I feel that it’s more terrifying and nerve wrecking considering how t They are trying to flee from the Germans who are just right behind the British slowly creeping up while their planes continue to cut them down on the beach or sink the ships
After watching this movie in IMAX 70mm today, I had to rush to the bus stop and catch it otherwise I would have waited another hour. I jogged to this track. I must say, it felt epic
When I first listened to this track in a summer evening, I was on the road home. Black clouds were gathering above in wrath, as if they were moving with the same rythm of this music. And then an intense hailstorm started, keeping us captive in the car. The ambience this music created back then was so awesome.
I feel the motion, i feel the atmosphere... Im there standing, waiting... Blind, dead silent.. Amazing master piece of Hans, Thank you for taking me to this yourney.
I did actually. His 'joke' just didn't make sense. He said he 'didn't like it' and that the film 'was too short'. Then he says he'll go see it again for some unknown reason. I know it was supposed to be funny but too short could be a legitimate criticism.
Hans Zimmer is a Genius and the Dunkirk-Soundtrack is his Opus Magnum in my point of view; this film would be nothing without that perfect score; absolutely brilliant
The whole soundtrack is a masterpiece! Since the movie had no dialogue most of the time, the music was the perfect choice and fill in! I’m obsessed with the movie, director, the actors, ....everything about this movie!
This soundtrack is so fantastic, it matches the action on the screen so perfectly, and literally grips you from start to finish. I've seen it twice now in theatres, and I'm definitely going to see it again!
Genuinely almost had a panic attack in the cinema when watching Dunkirk. It's so suspenseful and the soundtrack is the definition of anxiety. In a good way.
- The tide's turning now.
- How can you tell?
- The bodies are coming back.

The three stories are told in different periods of time, during the movie they show you what happened the last week on the beach before the evacuation, the last day on the boat and the last our for the pilots, like Inception where 10 seconds in the first level were 2 minutes in the second and 1 hour in the third
thanks
imagine being a soldier on dunkirk beach in may 1940. Pure hell
unless your german, doing target practice on that dutch boat
Imagine being a french soldier stuck in Dunkirk.
@@billyredtail not really funny
@@eagleswin2621 I have a lot of respect for the French 80th rear guard that held the line until the end
Yes, and in May 2020, some spoiled brats don't want to wear a mask inside a building for 15 minutes, if that. They consider themselves "freedom fighters." 😖
Hans Zimmer is a LEGEND
My friend told me he felt like he needed to go watch a Disney movie after watching Mad Max: Fury Road. I told him to not even think about watching Dunkirk then unless he has a pacemaker and oxygen mask.
This movie was incredible I have never seen a movie at the theater where the entire audience was silent.
silverspear21 Now that i think about it you are right nobody said anything such a masterpiece.
Balian yup
Balian all of Europe
Can Christopher Nolan win best director already? Because I think at this point he has more than earned it.
la la land was a great movie. but i also hope that Nolan wins this time :)
They don't award best director to the best director of the past 15 years though? They award it to whoever had the best directed movie of the year.
John Hooyer
Nolan has tackled all manners of genres, themes and methods.
How has he not shown range?
Hans zimmer is the best composer of our time
nadda Agreed
even best is not enough !!!
Of any damn time.
Both Zimmer and John are gods among men.
And the best thing is he's 100% self-taught; no degree, no courses, everything driven by his own passion and talent. now, that's what i call a genius
I think this film was to make you that you are not a viewer but a actual participant. Great movie
Nolan and Zimmer working together is beyond great
Haven't seen this movie yet and will be at least my third favorite movie. Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk = The Nolan and Zimmer combo. Masterpiece trilogy.
Freckles Fer Dark Knight
Super hero movies don't really hit the mark of being interesting and challenging. I couldn't really see the director behind the camera crew in Dark Knight like I could with Inception and Interstellar
Also the music in Dark Knight can't beat the music of neither.
Freckles Fer The dark knight is definitely better than interstellar
The movie is really good alot of people are saying Dunkirk is the best war film to come out and Nolan's best film ever made
Obviously this is slightly onto the genre debate, but my opinion is that superhero movies have lot less of cinematic value compared to sci-fi or drama/thriller.
To me super hero movies are just cheap cash in to really good comics. Not much else. I just personally can't respect them.
"We can practically see them from here"
"what?"
"all the comments about getting the goddamn oscar"
witchysea lol
Well it got nominated for best original soundtrack
this comment actually made me laugh
Only it didn't win 😓😓
If you listen closely at 0:50, you can hear bits of Variations 15, the soundtrack that is played when the small boats finally arrive. It reminds me of how the kick sound is actually the slowed down version of je ne regrette nien.
Dunkirk is Nolan's greatest film. It's not a war film, it's a survival thriller. It's the cinematic equivalent of the poem of war was told through heart attacks.
I love that the synth starting from 2:25 sounds kind of like the Stuka sirens.
Hans NEED AN OSCAR FOR THIS SOUNDTRACK
He just got nominated for this soundtrack :D
@@writershard5065 did he get one
50% of the movie is this ticking sound
and it is fucking great so
Exactly. It reminds you time is running out.
Ryan Crins it embodies the urgency of rescuing those men in the beach
And 99% of the movie is either the ticking sound or the heartbeat sound
The ticking is there the whole movie actually
2:24 Come on admit it when you reached here you felt some slight chills
My legs we're shaking when I got up from my seat after the movie
SilverSquad sameeee
This film and 1917 were probably the 2 most incredible cinematic experiences I’ve had in the last few years. I will forever be thankful that I saw both in imax and regretful that I didn’t see interstellar in IMAX.
You watched movie in imax and in my city no imax theater 😭
Shephard tone effect anyone?
Yes. Nolan loves using this effect. You can hear it in the Interstellar theme, the sound of the Batcy pe in The Dark Knight, etc.
yes
Vox video? Anyone?
Watched the vox video so many times
Yes
THE BIGGEST IRONY ABT SOUNDTRACK IN THIS WAR MOVIE ABOUT GERMANS VS BRITISH- ZIMMER IS A GERMAN, NOLAN IS BRITISH !!! - HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED!
To add to that irony, Zimmer is a German Jew (Jewish German, whatever). So, double twist!
Saukingalpha lol
Mordecai Zev Horowitz bruh u zionist lier stfu
Mordecai Zev Horowitz Ironic
Turns out that the tea sipping Poms and the sausage munching Bosche make for damn good partners.
now this is a Oscar winning soundtrack!
It just got nominated :)
Eerie
I can feel the horror of war with my ears
Mewtle Exakt. Genau das finde ich auch. Der Schrecken des Krieges.
Probably the darkest score hans zimmer ever composed
Nolan and Hans Zimmer are just bunch of geniuses. How can they make a PG13 war film that intense and pretty scary? Heart-pumping and chills throughout the movie man...
They are immortal and in charge. Never forget that,
Oscar ? Where are You?
Hans Zimmer is brilliant, once in a lifetime artist
I've seen this movie 3 times in 4 days....and in 3 different formats (35mm, Laser IMAX, and 70mm). It's amazing.
CelerityHouse Laser imax or 70mm? What you think is better
Now it's time to watch at home.
@@MaggotAddict21 def 70mm
Incredible sound track! I have watched the movie several times - just to hear the brilliance of joining of visual and atmospheric audio! Genius!
No, you are not alone. Everyone is here at start of WW3.
We were gifted with one of the best cinematic war movie ever. The movie has no real character focus just purely on the actual events that's happening on the evacuation. I don't thinkk anybody has ever seen this type of war movie before so this is quite original.
It was THE loudest movie I've ever watched in cinema but it was SO intense! :o
This movie and the soundtrack are a great masterpiece...
As terrifying as the Movie is .
Full stop. Yeah. I agree. War is awful.
I feel that it’s more terrifying and nerve wrecking considering how t
They are trying to flee from the Germans who are just right behind the British slowly creeping up while their planes continue to cut them down on the beach or sink the ships
I thought you said “terrible” for a second and I was about to go in on your ass lmao
After watching this movie in IMAX 70mm today, I had to rush to the bus stop and catch it otherwise I would have waited another hour. I jogged to this track. I must say, it felt epic
I didn’t know it was physically possible to scratch the inside of my brain... best part 2:25
Nice PFP.
Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer. What a duo! They equal perfection
Nolans top 3 movies Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk
I'd say swap number 3 with Dark Knight and Dunkirk can get the Number 4 spot
ClashBerry - Tutorials & More dunkirk should get the 2nd spot
No way Batman Trilogy kick Dundirk asses far away.
K not only are they Nolan's best movies, but some of the best ever
The prestige is his best
Nolan + Zimmer epic combo that makes a bone less pizza a reality!
Polite Paulite Both of them together is just perfect.
2 litre coke
Polite Paulite we clearly have different standards for pizza if you think pizza usually has bones.
fuck you mean B?
If you've been eating Pizza with bones in it, I advise you to report to a health inspector cause I'm sure that isn't regulation.
This makes my walk home 100% more intense
When I first listened to this track in a summer evening, I was on the road home. Black clouds were gathering above in wrath, as if they were moving with the same rythm of this music. And then an intense hailstorm started, keeping us captive in the car. The ambience this music created back then was so awesome.
I feel the motion, i feel the atmosphere... Im there standing, waiting... Blind, dead silent.. Amazing master piece of Hans, Thank you for taking me to this yourney.
I honestly can't get enough of this soundtrack
Me neither, especially the oil and supermarine
Hans Zimmer is great
Hisham Joker he sure is
Hisham Joker No Buddy..He is TOO GREAT
This movie was freaking amazing. The sound track + the ticking has you on the edge of your seat for the entire thing
I saw it yesterday. I didn't like it. It was too short. So I am going again today :-D
It actually felt like a two and a half hour movie for me. The scenes were amazing.
If you didn't like it why are you going again?
i think you didnt get his joke ;D
I did actually. His 'joke' just didn't make sense. He said he 'didn't like it' and that the film 'was too short'. Then he says he'll go see it again for some unknown reason. I know it was supposed to be funny but too short could be a legitimate criticism.
EJplay he didn't like it because the film was too short. He wants more, so he comes back again.

Speechless after listening hans zimmer's music
This soundtrack is so fantastic, it matches the action on the screen so perfectly, and literally grips you from start to finish. I've seen it twice now in theatres, and I'm definitely going to see it again!
Genuinely almost had a panic attack in the cinema when watching Dunkirk. It's so suspenseful and the soundtrack is the definition of anxiety. In a good way.
Such soundtracks keep me on the edge of my seat in the theater. What a masterpiece!
