EASY SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE ~ PERFECT FOR CUT OUT COOKIES

  • This recipe makes a simple but versatile vanilla sugar cookie with only a few ingredients and no fancy techniques. The dough is easy to work with, you'll be able to roll & cut with ease and they are bound to be the perfect 'go to' cookie recipe for any holiday cookies 👌💖
    This recipe requires chilling your dough, and yes I know, chilling is a pain....BUT rest assured that your patience will be paid off afterwards. I found chilling my cookie dough before and after cutting really helps to prevent spreading during baking. It also makes your dough very easy to manage when it comes time to roll it out and to cut out with perfect defined edges....so trust me when I tell you that it is well worth the wait! 😋👍💖
    📌NOTE: makes approx 2 dozen of cookies (depending on cutter sizes)
    💠 INGREDIENTS:
    175 grams icing sugar/powdered sugar [US Conversion: 1 ½ Cups]
    225 grams salted butter (room temperature) [US Conversion: 2 Sticks or 1 Cup]
    1 egg (room temperature)
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or any flavour your prefer)
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    420 grams all-purpose flour [US Conversion: 3 ¼ Cups]
    💠 INSTRUCTIONS:
    ▪ Cream together butter and icing sugar.
    ▪ Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix well.
    ▪ Sift together flour & baking powder, add to the mixture little by little until well incorporated.
    ▪ Wait approximately 30 - 60 mins before working with the dough as it will firm up slightly.
    ▪ Roll the dough between baking paper and put it into the fridge for a few hours this will help prevent spreading. When the dough is a bit firmer, take it out of the fridge and cut into desired shapes (lightly dust with flour if necessary).
    ▪ Place the cut out cookie dough into a baking tray then put it into the fridge again for another 1-2 hours, this will also help prevent spreading.
    ▪ Bake cookies at 180° Celsius for approx 10-12 minutes (times may vary slightly depending on your oven). Note: Each oven is different, I would recommend you get to know your oven and adjust the time accordingly.
    📌 USEFUL TIPS for making perfect sugar cookies:
    🔸 Ensure that you ALWAYS use room temperature butter, in the video i have shown you how to check if your butter have reached the correct room temperature, I can't stress enough on how important this is! Test your butter by pressing it, they should give slightly but it should still hold its shape. If you use butter that have melted too much and too soft you will end up with a dough that is too soft and hard to work with.
    🔹 When its time to cut your cookie dough, make sure to keep your cuts as close together to get as many cookies out of your dough as possible. I usually divide my dough into half before rolling them (you would have seen this in my video) and when it comes to re-rolling your scraps after your first cut, I usually add the second half from my un-rolled dough with the scraps and knead them together, then re-roll and cut again.
    🔸 Chill your dough if you want a perfect cut out cookies with define edges. I can't tell you how much chilling really helps my dough to retain they shape and prevent spreading, so for those of you who are impatient out there....if you want perfect cut out cookies I'm afraid you will have to wait and practice being patient LOL

    Thank You so SO so much for this recipe. And for Your great work on this channel. My cookies came out picture perfect. I am so impressed by the result. No spreading whatsoever. Also it was easy to eyeball the baking time. Thank You for such a fabulous recipe. Also it was really helpful that You were showing the consistency, the thickness, etc. Your tips were so helpful as well. I never could bake a pretty cookie before. Your channel is awesome!!! ❤ 🍪🌸
    *Also a tip from me for Your subscribers - I made the dough, chilled for 2 hours, cut out the cookies and put them in the fridge overnight. Then I’m the morning I put them STRAIGHT in the oven on the same baking sheet they were on (so it was cold). And my cookies were perfect. This is for people like me, who didn’t have enough time to do it in one day and were wondering if chilling dough overnight would affect the result (it doesn’t)

    Is it ok if I put my dough into the refrigerator overnight and then bake it the next morning?
    The recipe is amazing! I loved the fact that you actually described how it's suppose to feel after you mix all the ingredients in. Thank you so much! My dough looks great right now but it is quite hard. Should I wait for 30 minutes at room temperature before baking them? Again thank you for this recipe, I hope that this turns out great! 😁🤩👍🏻

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  4 роки тому +4

      Hey sweetie, I dont wait until the dough goes into room temperature...in fact i think the dough will retain the shape more if they are chilled and hard when they go into the oven. My cut-out cookie dough goes straight from the fridge into the oven to bake and they always come out amazing 😉👍💞

    hi, I love your recipe, and I have tried it. I just change a bit of your method, I don't used mixer, instead I used hand whisk and I'm blend it only until it's even. Therefore, I don't have to Chill my dough in the fridge over and over, just 1 time and around 15 minutes before I'm baked it🤭 and the shape is still good.
    Anyway, Pardon me if my English is sucks, I'm still learning it🙏🏻
    Love from Indonesia😘

      @Janelle Mcfarlane I made the recipe as close as possible, but each all purpose flour has an absorption property, for the brand I used I needed to put a little more flour. The cookie was extremely delicious, so I highly recommend the recipe. I rarely follow recipes, because when we have a sense of cooking, we can change the recipe a little bit.

      meeeeee toooooo! I have an 100+ year old family recipe that we made cut out cookies from. But, we didn't decorate them. We call them Old Fashion Tea Cakes but I've NEVER found the exact recipe written. That is my benchmark for a great tasting cookie...not too sweet...but can be enjoyed without icing...and crisp edges and medium soft center. Only problem...it rises and spreads because of baking soda. Every time I make them, I try something different but haven't found the perfect solution. I've tried lots of other recipes too, but none are as good. I'm going to try this one...mostly because of the powdered sugar. Here's to hoping for an amazing cookie...just sweet enough but not too sweet, no rise, no spread!

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  3 роки тому

      Hi Jennifer, sugar cookies should last a few weeks, depending on how you store them. I usually heat-sealed my cookies individually in a cellophane bag, which keeps the cookies fresh for longer. If you don't have a heat-sealer then I would highly recommend storing them in an airtight container with parchment paper in between layers 😊

    Hi Natalia, new subscriber here from PH! I definitely love your cookies and arts for them ❤️👍 i made some of these but it turns out that my cookies are soft and after I let them overnight to rest to decorate and flood the royal icing (I use meringue powder) I didn’t harden and it’s soft too (I don’t have a dehumidifier machine instead I use an airtight container with a food grade dehumidifier silica gel).
    It’s hot and humid here in my place and it’s raining when I made them 😭, do you think that’s one of the main reason it didn’t come out right? I followed all the instruction aside from putting it in a humidifier machine.
    Thanks and more cookie arts to come 🍪

If you are in a hot & humid condition I would highly recommend putting your cookie dough in the fridge before & after cutting them into shape as well as before baking. you will benefit from it specially if you are in a hot room or a humid country. I'm not sure what you mean by dehumidifier....i only use a dehydrator, so im presuming you meant a dehydrator? A dehydrator is useful to dry out the top layer of your icing, but it doesn't affect the texture or condition of your cookies.
      If you find the cookie dough super soft (even before cutting them into shapes) I need to check if you are using the correct room temperature butter? If your butter is too soft or have melted it will affect the texture of your cookie dough.

    Hello I know this video is a little old just hoping I’ll still get a reply from you 🤞🏻 I’ve tried so many sugar cookie recipes and I find using powder sugar gives the cookies the best taste for me personally. I’m having problems when I make these though one the dough comes out a bit crumbly. Two when I bake them the top will look cracked or like bubbly idk how else to describe it I do use a fondant smoother which helps but then there’s also the spreading that I’m trying to avoid so I’ve added cornstarch to my recipe I don’t know if this messes it up or what. And finally when I bake them the sides look like layers not all smooth like yours. I hope you can help me out I’m loosing my mind trying to perfect this recipe because I love the taste so much! By the way I cover my cookies in fondant so I really don’t want them to spread. Thank you!! Hoping you’ll reply 😉🤞🏻

    Hai. I’m so in love with your recipe.. 😘 can’t wait to try and have the same result as yours. I have a question. If we put the balance in the fridge (the balance of the dough with parchment paper), the dough will tough to roll in right? So how long it’s take to roll the dough back from the fridge? Thank you,

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  5 років тому +2

      Hi Noor, it doesnt take long for the dough to soften into room temperature after you take it out of the fridge (it will take longer to soften from the Freezer), mine usually take 10-15 mins then it will be soft. I usually like to cut them into shape when the dough is firmer/slightly harder so that I get cleaner lines and sharp edges. Hope that helps 😉👍💖

    Hi Liza! Your cookies are great and I often bake with your recipe. Please advise is it possible to bake and decorate the cookies in advance? And to keep them in a fridge than for a week?

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  4 роки тому +2

      hello, i just need to let you know that my name is Natalia and not Liza 😜 anyway to answer your question, yes you can bake and decorate in advance, i do that all the time as I always juggling priorities and often pressed for time, so I usually make & decorate the cookies a few weeks in advance, i store them in the freezer but ensure to heat-sealed them in an individual cellphone bag then put them inside an air-tight container (this will be a double protection against freezer burn). 📍NOTE: it is very important to know, please DO NOT put completed decorated cookies in the fridge, you need to store them in the FREEZER instead. If you put your completely decorated cookies in the fridge all your hard work decorating will be damaged. The freezer will keep them intact and fresh. Also note that the shelf life of decorated cookies will be suspended while they are in the freezer so you can keep them in there for a few months.Hope that helps 😊

    hello! thank you so much for your videos! I'm venturing into the cookie making world and I never get tired of watching your videos! Question: Can you over-chill the dough? Or is it okay if I do mostly everything the night before, chill the cut outs over night, and bake them in the morning?
    Also.. Can you put them in the freezer to speed up the process?

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  6 років тому +2

      Hi Michelle, the answer is YES to all of your questions 😁 I do that sometimes when I ran out of time...left the cut out dough in the fridge and bake the day after. I usually make my dough at night so if i get too tired or its too late to bake, i put all my trays into the fridge and bake the day after. OR if you don't have too much time in your hands, use the freezer to speed up the chilling process, you don't have to put it in there for long but it works really well to retain their shape, hope that helps! 😉💖👍

    Great video! Im definitely going to try this. I don’t have a paddle attachment to my mixer and it’s an unknown brand so I can’t buy one for it. Will the hook or whisp attachment work as well? Thanks in advance

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  5 років тому

      Hi hun, I think you should be fine using the whisk attachment...I usually use the hook attachment for making bread, haven't tried it for making cookie dough so I can't comment on that. I specifically use my whisk attachment ONLY to make my royal icing and I don't use it for making the cookie dough as I dont want to risk any oil contamination for my icing (from the butter when making the dough), but if you want to use the same attachment to make both just make sure clean it really well and maybe rinse it with lemon juice before using the same attachment to make your icing. Hope that helps 😉💖👍

      Hi Tai, very good question but nope it doesnt taste salty at all as the salt actually balance the flavour in the cookie, however its a matter of personal preferences as I know a few bakers that only use unsalted butter 😊 I would encourage you to give it a try, however if you want to do a test maybe do half a batch with salted and another half with unsalted butter and see which one you prefer the taste of 😉👍😋
