That's not how it works. While pop is usually more mainstream music that is played on the radio or more widely known across the world, there are mainstream parts of each genre, even alternative.(artists that are more well known). These could include TØP, Halsey, The 1975, Troye Sivan, Melanie Martinez, etc. Just because an artist becomes popular outside of their "genre", it doesn't no longer make them no longer apart of that genre. A artist's genre is determined by the instruments they use and how similar they sound to other artists in that genre. Same goes with folk music, indie, pop punk, etc.There are still plenty of undiscovered pop artists and they're still considered pop because of the instruments and electronics they use in their music. I don't think you quite understand, your genre never changes based on your popularity, it only changes by the music you produce. TØP is still alternative even though they are HUGELY famous and often played on basic pop stations. That never changes. :)
