He will reveal his plan in time. I went through a depression for about 2 years and near the end, I became completely numb and couldn’t feel him there anymore, even though I knew the truth and had seen what he had done. But he lead me to a mountain where there was no distractions and was able to hear him again. Went back 2 months later and he began revealing things and it all started becoming clear. He works in his time, but it’s so worth the wait. One thing I’ve learned is to keep in touch with people who are faithful to him and stay in prayer and worship.
Maybe you don't need to know... Maybe that's what faith is, walking and trusting that you're steps are ordered by the Lord.

And yes, I can rest in him. But lay back?
Wort Verbreiter “come all to me who are heavy laden and I will give you rest” also John would lay back on Jesus’ chest. That was when Jesus walked the earth but we have a better covenant so if John could do that then how greater do we have it? If we follow Him, I believe He will tell us when the battle is His and our time to rest or when it’s time to pick up our cross and go forth. I hope that makes sense, seek God and He will reveal what is truth. He is the way, the truth, and life.
