This tool is a magnetic field detector . It will detect magnetic fields on fuel injectors , spark plug coils , or starter solenoids . It will pickup the fields of any magnet . It is quite useful and inexpensive and works on A/C or D/C systems . 6/19/23
I bought about 20 of these for 1 dollar AUD! I gave some away but I find that this is the quickest way to test ignition coil! Btw its just an AC voltage tester .
I had a misfire on cylinder number 2 and 7 on my Dodge ram. Replacing both coils didn't fix the problem. Removed the spark plugs and the electrodes were completely worn away. So a cylinder misfire isn't always a bad coil. Start with the most inexpensive thing first! Luckily the auto parts store let me return the coils
Next time swap the suspected bad coil with a cylinder that you know is functioning, then see if the misfire follows the coil. Pretty easy way to rule out the coil.
That's great but u don't know forsure if it's the coil, could be wiring/connector or module. So u still need to swap some coils to c if it changes cylinders. I mean most common is the coil but I've seen it be the wiring twice. And I'm a HD diesel truck tech and only worked as an auto tech for a few years.
I use to use the timing light on the spark plug wires to see if the current was consistently flashing or if it was missing every now and then. That told me if my spark wires were bad.
Matco robbing 😂 techs in those mobile trucks with a tool that been around forever lol electrical engineers been using this match just painted and stamped they name😂
I, of course, have to have one of those testers that never even flickered on a just-installed NEW coil, let alone the old ones on my '03 Toyota Corolla. My tester is marked "VoltAlert 1AC-D, sensitivity 90-1000 VAC". It does work on my home's electrical outlets. What brand did Nuts and Bolts use?
yep.. had the dealer do that. one went bad. then another with the check engine light on and they said F it just do all 4 and change the plugs. problem solved
Unplug coil pack does not comfirm bad coil. We only know that one cylinder is misfiring. It might be coil, spark plug, injector, low compression or blown gasket. Method in this video can tell coil is not working.
@@itswais77 sounds like an easy valve cover gasket replacement. maybe also spark plug tube seal. common on mazda and honda as far as i know. 2-3 hour job with the right tools

All this is is a quick way to see if the ignition coil is firing. You can swap the coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire moves to that cylinder.
me out , I changed the spark plugs and wires on my 01 Carvana and after doing that my van has a ruff vibration at ideal or coming to a stop on red. Dude take my advise! That tool is not 100% accurate, sometimes the problem is vintage leaked and the tool will pick it up as a good coil because technically the coil is working, it's just the voltage not getting to the spark plug
You don't need matco. Probably several dollars over what other brands are. It's just a pen tester for checking current through cords, outlets, boards, ignition coils, etc. I do have to say tho, never thought about using on coils. That's a great idea.

Can you please elaborate? What do you mean by "fish bite"?
You can also use this tool to test the magnetic field in the relay.

Or unplug each coil pack and go by the tone of the engine, if it gets worse the coil is good if it doesn’t change then the coil is bad
Sometimes the connectors' plastic becomes very brittle. So it's best to only break the one connected to the faulty coil instead of all of them😅

Not sure there is much you can do. Does it do it on every car
Will it work by touching the plug ? My car has 2 coul packs that run 2 holes each ?
you want to touch it around the top of the coil, maybe at each side of where the wires are and this is only a quick check that does not always work.
