I've been trying to work out how slave and play individual samples via midi on the DR660 and finally worked it out so though i would share! Press midi and then the forward arrow once you will see "MIDIch" this is where you set the master midi channel (the sequencer must be on the same channel as the DR660 . Finally press midi again and you will see "1NOTE# sure?" click enter now you can program the samples via your sequencer. Great little bit of kit!
Thanks man! I couldn't change the beat length and I checked the manual but they explain it terribly. Now I get it. Thanks dude! This is a sweet machine.
I don't know why the price of some old drum machines has gone up a lot lately I was looking for a roland r70, which in the end is a slightly improved 660, 400/500 or more €. People are crazy
When I try to access the synth bass sound, it only lets me change it on one note-button at a time (manually). Also when I try to change it on another pad, it plays the same exact note 🤯. Is there some setting that I need to change ? I want to be able to select Syn Bass on pad B (for example), and have each button play a different note with the Syn-bass
nice tutorial. does anybody know if I can use the dr660 synced with a looper like the boss rc300? I need to loop things and use the drum machine at the same tempo. please tell me if that is possible. greetings
nice tutorial! been fiddling around with this drum machine through midi. only annoying thing is that when i stop my external sequencer the kit I selected goes back to Standard kit . ANy ideas how i might solve this issue?
Hmm. Maybe your ext sequencer is sending out midi reset when you stop and return. You might want to look deep in the settings. Alternatively if it's easy to do set an xg or gm command at bar 0 that sets your kit. I used to set a blank pattern with the command in old Atari Logic but every sequencer is diffrent. Good luck.
i have a dr-770 and im using it in paatern- step mode but when i record a beat it wont let me press the rec button again to unarm and practice i can only record it the first time is there anyone that knows why i cant un arm the track and practice i have to keep deleting when i mess up its frustrating
Not a dumb question, no you can't on this one as it's just a drum machine with it's own sounds. You would need a sampler to do that. Something like an akai mpc or a digitakt elektron.
Hey, nice tutorial, but i have a problem with my 660, it doesn´t show the tempo, and when i press the tempo button, i´m still not able to change it. and i am not able to hear the metronome when i press play. Do you know why it is like this?
Don't think you can. You would have to have a 3rd switch that would trigger the looper and drum machine at the same time. The dr660 does not have a footswitch input but it does have midi. The best way would probably be to record your drum loops into the looper first from the drum machine. On a rc30 you can save preset loops.
Le Bêbeve as long as you have an audio interface you can transport any audio to you computer. I say "audio interface" because most times it's better quality than your basic sound card!
Alright so this thing sends SYSEX messages and it is super finicky with new computers. the ONLY way that I could ever get my info onto the computer was by sending MIDI OUT of the DR-660 to the MIDI IN of my Microkorg XL and the MIDI OUT of it into a MIDI USB adapter into the computer with a SYSEX dump program (SYSEX Librarian for MAC was what I used). It took me forever to figure this out. But even then it will just save the SYSEX data, you wont actually be able to use it in a DAW or anything. What I do for that is go to Legowelt’s website and download his DR-660 sample pack and then just make a drum rack/kit in the DAW and let the drum beat in the DR-660 play the drum samples in the DAW via the MIDI USB adapter. Basically all that the SYSEX will do is back up your drum tracks, either one or all, depending on what you choose. So you’ll definitely need 2 MIDI cables and a MIDI to USB adapter to save, but if you want to just do the drum sample thing all you will need is a MIDI cable. You will also POSSIBLY need a synthesizer with MIDI IN/OUT to use as the slave and run the DR-660 through. I cannot speak for its connectivity with other computers, just my MacBook. The problem there is that basically if I connect it to my computer with the MIDI USB adapter it will not actually send the data to my computer, but if I run it through the synthesizer the data will actually send to the computer for whatever crazy reason. Here is the page for the samples. Legowelt is a master and they are very well done. Do not forget that it is still important to save your SYSEX because eventually the CR2032 battery in the 660 will need to be replaced and whenever it is taken out it wipes the memory of the machine. awolfe.home.xs4all.nl/studio660.htm Here is the MIDI USB adapter www.walmart.com/ip/New-USB-IN-OUT-MIDI-Interface-Cable-Converter-to-PC-Music-Keyboard-Adapter-Cord/754818379?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=12337&adid=22222222227136225933&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=245198957737&wl4=pla-402656563850&wl5=1017824&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=117437086&wl11=online&wl12=754818379&wl13=&veh=sem I really hope that this helps. Thank you so much Simon, for the tutorial. I have the DR770 and this will help me get started,
Bought one of these back in 95 great little machine I loved programming in step time and the flam effect was sweet
My favorite drum machine. No doubt.
Thanks, this got me started quickly without having to read the manual :-)
The Boss DR-660 was heard in the 1992 ending version of the Sesame Street theme/song.
Bought this back in 1998. 660 and Dr5 are the best of Boss Dr Rhythm drum machines
I bought mine new in 1993 and bought a DR5 as a christmas present (2020) for a friend to practice bass with . They are great boxes of fun 🤗
I had one of these back in the day & I did know how to work it,it's not bad
Thank you.I haven't used it in a long time and I just might start again
Very nice tutorial, most appreciated THANKS A LOT!
Very helpful. Thank you!!
Best drum machine from roland for one reason it does real time patterns into song
Squarepusher used it as sequencer for his Akai sampler, on his "Hard Normal Daddy" album.
I think he also used it on Big Loada and Feed Me Weird Things.
Squarepusher?
THE MAN! So inspirational. I wonder if he also used it on the Buz Caner / Chaos AD album material
Really good basic intro!
2018 still comein handy...
My first drum machine back in 1994

Great tutorial!
Selling my over priced R-8 and buying this used gem was my best move ever.
