If you jump at the edge of a low hanging grass stem you can use it to bounce fast backwards. You do not become invisible to black ants wearing their armor
The best armor set is the sickly roly poly gear found near the bottom right of the map where the hose is kill 3 in total in order to craft the gear in order to fight him I reccomend going to upgrade a one handed sword or item and get a weevil shield and max out the weapon as far as you can

Different armors do not give you resistances versus others however they do give set bonuses if you wear all the same equipment
Worthwhile upgrades for the start include the insect bow and spikey sprig
