I've almost finished painting my Italian Bersaglieri starter set for North Africa and I absolutely love them. As for their rules, the upcoming Case Blue book is said to have new replacement rules for the Italians and I hope they're good ones. I would love to hear your thoughts about the upcoming French set. I honestly think its a good set, but it would be better if the MMG was replaced with a second AT gun or an artillery gun to make use of their national rules.
Hey brother I have a solution: Family members! Forced/optionally forced games are my go to lol. I’ll offer to mow the lawn or babysit my little brother in exchange for my dad playing games with me. Now a year later he owns 5000+ points of late-war Germans…
I got started by getting invited to a demo and winning product in a raffle. the game shop staff went "We all know you're going to play Marines, so just pick the Sherman!" so I did, and went with the USMC box set. Wished it had come with the water cooled rather than the air cooled MMG, but that's a minor quibble.
I went with the Winter Soviet starter because I'm a sucker for the KV-2 and when I think of the Red Army in WW2 I think of them in their winter greatcoats
Started with hungarian still going strong, but man I wish I had started with a large faction it would have been so much easier to learn...and probably would have actually won some games earlier on
No, the various books give you basic army rosters as well as the rosters tied to specific battles or eras. A reinforced platoon is infantry squads (think troops + HQ), and then the tank/armored car/artillery/etc fighting in concert with that infantry platoon. Larger focus on infantry. There is also a Tank War ruleset supplement with more of an emphasis on armor and vehicles.
You mixed up the soviet starter ones. The 1940-43 is the expensive one tied with winter and it's the regular one that's cheaper. Would that change your recommendation?
I think you got your Soviet starters the wrong way around. The regular starter set with the mortar is the cheaper one, and that's the one you showed images of. The 40-43 starter set is more expensive but the one you described.
@@comradezy they’re both worth it. It depends on what flavour of army you want. The main difference is the tank and mortar. The earlier war T34 will be fine for most games with the later one possibly being overkill. But the mortar in the later war set is a far more useful unit than the Medium Machine Gun. They both build 1000 point lists too. All BA starter armies do.
@@Featherus_ How do you feel about the winter set? It doesn't seem to have any glaring weaknesses like the 1940-43, i guess everyone wants a mortar? I think I like the winter outfits better too.
Starting Factions are much more limited than you make it sound. Since you need the rules, template, pins and order dice- your only realistic choices for starters is one of the three starter packs- BOB, Gentleman's or Pacific. So, your starting Army is pretty much going to have to be one of those contained in one of those sets. US Paras, German Grenadiers, USMC,Japanese or 8th Army.
Is bolt Action sort of a closed Ecosystem games, or is it accepted for people to just roll up with any historically accurate minis of the correct scale?
Afaik you can roll up with basically whatever. The rules aren’t for specific units but rather the weapons they have. So any riflemen will do. Many people kind of just use whatever bolt action or flames of war minis and just play. It’s much looser than like warhammer.
@@PrimordialNightmare Yeah even bolt action tournaments don’t really care what models you bring. Very unlike warhammer lol. Just be the right general size and shape and you’re fine. Although all bolt action starter armies are apparently 1,000 points plus so it’s hard to beat that price for a whole army with any war game.
@@PrimordialNightmare and also, with ANY miniatures game, if you don’t plan on playing in tournaments you can feel free to use basically whatever you want as long as it shouldn’t be difficult for your opponent to tell what is supposed to be what. Go wild with third parties, 3d prints, whatever you want. It’s your hobby. Just try to be reasonable lol.
I must disagree with the selection of german starters. I would say that WIntr german starter is much better that Grenediers. You get 12 more infantry instead of AT gun, and you get PZ IV + a transport which are really good options
What is a good early war set to go with my vickers mk VI tank I recently won as a prize in a tournament I joined to help make up numbers? (Complete noob here, and totally confused.)
Any chance of covering minors? I am very curious what minors are included, I've heard Finland and I think even Hungary mentioned? Really hoping for Poland and China. China because I love Pacific/Bhurma/etc, and they had such a wild assortment of early weapons from everyone. Poland because of all the domestic equipment that still performed well despite substantial limitations (in no small part due to German mistakes)
Been looking at the us marine starter army as I like marines and don't know anyone who plays bolt action near me yet $155 is not bad at all for all of that, I'd only get a guard squad and a half for that
B O L T A C T I O N is best guardbros, just do it
Facts
That's a long video to just say that the Japanese are the best faction, and the Japanese Konflikt 47 Starter Box is the best.

Thanks, been looking at bolt action lately, had a taster game last week, enjoyed it.
Plastic French starter army coming out very soon too!
Wasnt ever interested in 40k, but subbed for your BA content, keep it up!
The hearts of iron music fits well
3:58 British COMMANDOS! CHECK!
18:00 We Italians know how to have fun!
Thinking of getting the winter Germans as I love the models and can use them in any time period 🤔
Fun stuff! I miss bolt action, since moving I have not been able to play any war game other than 40k

Bolt Action is such a great game. Has a great support, too. Lots of minis and supplements.
what about the Fallschirmjager starter?
You're doing a great job. I honestly enjoy all of your videos. Keep up the good work, sir!
Curious why the Commandos instead of British and Canadian starter?
Well both Canadians and British joined the Commandoes. So you could play them as either.
I mean the box with the Universal carrier and Churchill

It would be cool to see this game painted in blk and white. The terrain, vehicles, and soldiers. I think I may try that
Fallschirmjager probably equals the Grenadiers. 100pts, all useable, straight out of the box.
Didn't you recently recommend the German winter army? Which one is better this one or the Grenadiers?
