Why Do Americans Avoid Living In This HUGE Area Of The East Coast

  • Why do some places thrive with bustling city life while others remain relatively untouched? You may have noticed that Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina are home to only around 10 million people along their combined coastal regions. This trend stands in stark contrast to the more populous Northeastern states, including Florida. But it is when we look at the numbers and statistics more closely that we begin to see that something strange is happening in this region. So what's the reason why Americans are avoiding this huge area of the East Coast? Let's find out.
One thing that stands out when looking at state-level population figures is the contrast between the more populous Northeastern states and Florida versus the comparatively smaller populations of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. This isn't just a recent trend. The population imbalances between these regions have existed for quite some time. Despite covering more than 30% of the landmass along the East Coast, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina contribute to only 15% of the region's population. When compared to the bustling Northeastern states, it's puzzling why this part of America doesn't attract more residents to its coastal areas

There's still time to take down this video. This video is insanely stupid. The weather, it was 101°F yesterday and on top of that we have this thing called humidity. Not to mention the massive surge in people moving here from states like CA, NY and UT. I'd could type paragraphs on everything wrong with this video. It's obvious to anyone from GA that whoever wrote this script has never been here. Wild. Our tourism industry is huge.

Plus the cost of living in that coastal area. That includes much higher insurance cost due the frequency of severe hurricanes. I live in East Point in Ga and believe me I’d rather live in Hilton Head.

@shane1489 that's the coast anywhere there is one. It's always going to cost more. The cost of living in Atlanta is so high, people are moving south down I-75. It's cheaper doing the 2 hour+ back and forth commute to work everyday. The growth and development has skyrocketed.

Okay okay let me say something as a lifelong resident of coastal NC. These areas flood and constantly harassed by hurricanes. But the biggest reason it’s not so heavily populated is because the coastal areas sold out for tourism.

Many of the views in this video are obviously not from the part of the east coast under discussion. There are no mountains there or any of the rocky shorelines shown. You won’t see any of that until you reach the New England coast. This is indeed “Insane” curiosity.

As a native North Carolinian, I remember my childhood going to the Outer Banks. Very little growth and sparse housing. Went back 10 years or so ago and you couldn't see the ocean or the sound going up to the Corolla light for all the houses and developments in the way. Sadly doesn't sound like avoiding to me.

Depends on the elevation altitude, when the ice caps finally melt sea level will rise 200 feet. As it's raised 33,000 feet over the last 10,000 years.
But hopefully sea level will rise 300 feet. Make it a cool 33,333.333R feet raised.

This video is clueless. Has this guy ever been to Atlanta? Charlotte? All that and they don't even mention the real reason the populations are lower in these areas. Before air conditioning (which is only in the last 75 years), living in these areas could be oppressive between the heat and humidity. Also, the population drops off after a geographic feature called the Fall Line. This is where most of the rivers to the coast become shallow with rapids at the line between the piedmont and coastal plain. Cities like Augusta GA, Columbia SC, and Columbus GA all sit at the fall line. That is the furthest inland rivers could be navigated. Cities in the NE US have navigable rivers that go much further and with the Erie Canal, NY was connected all the way to the Midwest. Atlanta was more of a railroad town.

Fewer humans on the Carolinas and Georgia coast.
Nothing but a GOOD thing, or what's left of that original native natural beauty - and there ain't much - would be gone as it nearly is in Florida.

That's a real problem. Luckily, Wilmington NC is more progressive than some of the surrounding counties. Wilmington is in New Hanover County. Being a port city means that it's more cosmopolitan. Wilmington is also a university town with UNCW located there. The port traffic there is substantial. Attitudes of the local population are less rigid than what's found in more rural areas. Beyond the gorgeous beaches and channels, there's a thriving maritime industry along with a major film industry here. Climate is reliably warm with very mild Winters.Interesting facts: Interstate 40 starts in Wilmington NC and ends at Barstow CA. At 34° North latitude, Wilmington is the same latitude as Hollywood California.
