    I remember A huge Star Wars fan I went to school with had the dvd complete saga set. Another kid that was very wealthy had the blu-ray set and knew that it wasn’t real and traded it with him. Nicest thing I’ve ever seen someone with money do in my whole life. When then burned them. Smelled horrible.

    Kind of shocked amazon would do this. When Lucasfilm finds out their lawyers will have a field day.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  4 роки тому +4

      It's not so much that Amazon themselves sell it as they are allowing their self-publishing platform to be the wild west so that third parties can bootleg under the guise of being an Amazon product. Lucasfilm probably has either no knowledge of the situation, or it's such a small issue that they don't do anything about it for fear of the publicity backlash that would ensue (even if it would be asinine for there to be backlash).

      @@ChronoRadio well either way, I hope Lucasfilm does something about this. Not cool that fans are getting ripped off. Also maybe Lucasfilm needs to realize fans want access to these films and should try to meet that demand.

    I'm surprised Disney/Lucasfilm hasn't shut down that Bootleg Ewoks DVD from Amazon yet. Speaking of which, would we ever get a blu-ray release of those movies or would they go straight to Disney+? Also, the only good thing these bootlegs got going for them is the cases, because sometimes even official releases (not necessarily Star Wars ones) have the worst type of cases and the discs are organized miserably.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  4 роки тому +1

      I would think these would be more likely to go to Disney+, as I'm not sure if they would have access to masters for rescans to allow them to be released on HD formats. I guess it would depend on the existing scans of the original masters.

    There was even that Chinese Bootleg DVD version of Revenge of the Sith that was sourced from the workprint that was leaked on the same day as the film was released. (3:10)
    That's the bootleg that included the badly translated English subtitles and the one that caused Darth Vader's NOOOO to be rendered as "Do Not Want".

    I will just mention, the fact that the disc holder comes out isn't as big of a red flag as you might think. While Fox or Disney have never done it from what I can recall, Paramount will do this a lot for sets with 15 through 20 or so discs, such as their official Twilight Zone and Spongebob box sets. It's very upsetting that bootleggers are getting better at their craft of deception, and it's a good thing we have you to help debunk them.

    Since you mentioned that the Five Star Collection bootleg DVDs of the original trilogy were also in silver packaging, I can only assume that those versions of it would be fullscreen since gold was for widescreen at the time. On that note, I’m actually quite curious on what THX trailer was on them even though they weren’t legitimate DVDs.

    The twelve-disc DVD saga set is the equivalent of the bootleg disc versions of the Half-Life 2 leak of 2003 (from Russia), being bootleg (and unauthorized) reprints of the 2008 original & prequel trilogy DVD sets made by somebody other than the filmmakers. (0:24)

    Hi there, Nathan! I have a question about bootlegs. Let's say if Christian Black, a friend of mine who is a fan of the series, made "extended editions" of the prequel trilogy with a custom dvd menu and cover art, and if they were THX certified with a fan made THX trailer? Would they be considered bootlegs or fan made projects? Also, he's looking forward to the second edition A Saga on Home Video when it comes out. Thanks, and may the force be with you.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  3 роки тому +1

      The way I tend to use the terminology, it's not so much two different categories as a broad category with a subcategory. By definition, if you are distributing existing material you don't own, such as the Star Wars films, even with alterations (unless it's limited enough to fall under fair use law, which wouldn't be the case for full film restorations and such), what you are distributing is a bootleg. However, within the category of bootlegs, you have smaller subcategories like digital bootlegs online, factory pressed or "home" pressed bootlegs, etc. Fan projects that rely on a bootleg copy of the film at their core would be the subcategory of fan edits, fan restorations, etc. Still technically bootlegs but with a significantly different purpose, hence a different subcategory from other bootlegs of more profit-driven nature.

      @@ChronoRadio I know this video talks more about video releases that are bootlegs, but tricking people happens a lot, and not just with releasing products to think they’re real. This is probably not the best example, but someone found a supposed audience reaction of the Empire Strikes Back when Vader tells Luke that he is his father. Apparently the reaction that was in that video turned out to be from something else, and the shocking thing is, a lot of people fell for it. In a way, it's like getting a bootleg of something and you wouldn't even know it until you looked or listened to it really closely. Again, not the best example or comparison, but I hope you understand. Like you said, don’t get suckered or swindled.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't rewatched the video, but I'm assuming the point I was making was that region coding is not a thing on bootlegs, as they are almost never region-locked due to how they are produced.

    I recall on the previous "debunking the saga bootleg" intermission episode that you mentioned some copies of those fake twelve disc saga DVD sets are in fact the legit 2001/2002/2005 two disc releases of the prequels and '06 Limited Edition original trilogy sets repackaged into that same case with the recycled Darth Vader cover from the 2015 BD reissue, though it seems the straight up single layer bootlegged versions you show in each of the sets here seem to be the more common ones out there being posted and sold by these people.

    And speaking of bootlegs, there is a video about the “Sequel Trilogy” that we’re put out on VHS. These are not official releases, these were completely bootleg including “The Force Awakens”, “The Last Jedi” and “Rise of the Skywalker”, and the titles are in Russia. These VHS tapes doesn’t exist, because VHS tapes completely died back in 2016 after 40 years since it began in Japan in 1976, and in the US the following year in 1977. The video is linked below.
