Here is part of her Wikipedia entry. She unfortunately died by suicide in 1985. Jeanne Deckers (17 October 1933 - 29 March 1985), aka Jeannine Deckers,[1] better known as Sœur Sourire ("Sister Smile", often credited as The Singing Nun in English-speaking countries), was a Belgian singer-songwriter and initially a member of the Dominican Order in Belgium as Sister Luc-Gabrielle. She acquired world fame in 1963 with the release of the French-language song "Dominique", which topped the U.S. Billboard and other charts.
It is Belgian. We Belgian have 3 national languages (Dutch, French and German). The same as french fries, they also come from Belgium and not from France. They were serverved to Amarican troops when WWII ended at West-Vlaanderen where at that time a lot of people spoke French. The American troops named it "french fries" because of that.

I love the harmony in the original, and other nice musical elements. The contrast between the light bubbly refrain and the more serious tales of Dominques acheivements is also nice. It's just nice. Fun fact from Wikipedia: "The song's chorus refrain "Dominique, nique, nique" was the source of some unintended amusement amongst French listeners as the word "niquer" is short for "fornicate", with "nique" the equivalent of "fuck"; Deckers was unaware of the connotation, as were the other Belgian Catholics of that era."
As a Catholic, I feel terrible to see how Soeur Sourire was treated by her ex convent and was bad-mouthed by many other Catholics after she left the convent: She was left in utter poverty and had to committed suicide with her best female friend who was NOT her "partner!" What a loss to the world as she had such a beautiful voice and wrote beautiful songs. May she rest in peace!
Actually she did have a sexual relationship with Annie… Biographer Catherine Sauvat asserts that despite this denial, Deckers did go on subsequently to have a sexual relationship with Pécher, though only after several years of life together.[20]

Bruh I heard this for the first time watching American Horror Story I was bouncing on my bed while listening to this smiling like a madwoman everytime I heard it come on! It brings such a sense of joy and happiness 🤣 its stuck in my head, but I know for a fact if I listened to this over and over for a year I would be like the girl banging her head on the wall at Briarcliff...
Premier commentaire en francais hihi Happy to see so many English fellas enjoying it, in Quebec we came to think English people hates us Merci Les amis! :)
Soeur Sourire donated the proceeds from her songs to the convent and church. When she left the church the Belgian government sued her for tax evasion and although the recording company received a major portion of royalties, and the church the remainder, they did little to assist. She attempted to start a school for autistic students with her partner, but it eventually failed. The two women committed suicide together in 1985. So much for Debbie Reynolds version of the "Joyful Singing Nun".
Did any one else come searching for this song from Jeenie Weenie??? No? Just me? Ok... Edit: I just realized that this had swears...I've been singing this the whole day...
I remember that one time at church camp, this song started playing and everyone was singing it while I was trying not to have a meltdown from all the memories of the asylum. Excuse my trauma dumping, but my therapist wasn’t exactly the right person to deal with me, so I’m still searching for one. My experience at a mental institution wasn’t that bad, it’s just the feelings of helplessness you feel all alone, left at the mercy of your own delusions in the room you decorated yourself, while you lie down in your bed with nice people who don’t exist, praying that a nurse comes check up on you to give you another boost of medicine. Edit: just wanted to clarify, I’m not Schizophrenic, but I had a non-life threatening tumour that was causing me to hallucinate real hard.
When I sing along I think I sound super french but then I take my earphones out and I'm just screaming like a walrus...

------------
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
At a time when Johnny Lackland
over England was the king
Dominique was in the backland
fighting sin like anything
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
Now a heretic one day
among the thorns forced him to crawl
Dominique with just one prayer
made him hear the good Lord's call
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
Without horse or fancy wagon
he crossed Europe up and down
Poverty was his companion
as he walked from town to town
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
One day in the budding Order
there was nothing left to eat
Suddenly two angels walked in
with a load of bread and meat
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
Grant us now oh Dominique
the grace of love and simple mirth
That we all may help to quicken
godly life and truth on earth
Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord

It's actually an extremely religious song if you were to listen to the lyrics in English. Nothing nightmarish about it.

Happy to see so many English fellas enjoying it, in Quebec we came to think English people hates us
Merci Les amis!
This song is wonderful! We italian people love this french song ;)!
Io sto qua solo per American Horror Story. Il francese fa schifo, coso.

I love this music
