How To Record Electric Guitar - With 1 Mic
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- In this latest video of the "How To" series, Jason de Wilde from the Australian Institute of Music demonstrates recording an electric guitar with a single microphone. By positioning the mic in different locations around the speaker cabinet, you can achieve vastly different sounds. The mic position acts like an EQ (equaliser) and you can achieve the correct balance of highs, mids and lows just by moving the mic a few inches.
This video is best listened to by using headphones.

Audio @ Aim The Bachelor of Music (Audio Technology) is a thorough and complete study of sound engineering and music technology. Throughout all stages of the course students are taught theoretical concepts which are supported with practical audio classes. Students will learn to collaborate with other other AIM students including composers, musicians, performers and actors to complete major projects. Students have access to our state of the art recording studios to complete their assessments. They also have opportunities to work on the many additional recording projects such as the Best of AIM CD which is produced each year. Students further their musical knowledge and skills with practical and theoretical units. Students who want to focus on technical production skills should choose the Audio Major. Associate study options enable all audio students to either specialise or broaden their study program.
The major study units of this audio course combines three streams of study:
1. Audio Technology These units focus on the theoretical aspects of sound engineering including; acoustics, perception of hearing, digital audio, sampling, elctronics and system design.
2. Recording Technology These units focus on the practical techniques of recording and mixing sound. Students undertake practical classes in the numerous recording studios at AIM. Students also complete their own recording projects in each of these units. Projects increase in complexity as students progress through the course.
3. Digital Technology These units focus on the software used in the field of sound and music production. All units are undertaken in the Digital Media lab at AIM. Each student has access to a digital audio workstation to complete their classes.
Filmed and produced by Adam St John - Foti for AIMtv the official music channel for the Australian Institute of Music.
Spot on about the mic placement but with a 2 speaker cab when moving off the cone I suggest moving the mic to the outside of the cab instead of the inside. This reduces the bleed from the right speaker which can introduce phase cancellation depending on distance from the grill and size of the cab.
What a great video! Perfectly explained! AimTVSydney Great work!
Great tutorial, really showed the frequency and dynamics changing while you moved that mic around.
Thanks that helped! Easy to comprehend and to put into practice! Cheers
Its almost always better to get a correct tone from mic positioning, than to use an EQ.
Another thing, an instrument speaker seldom sounds the same around its entire radius. It can be bright on one side & warm on the other, as well as internal cab reflections.
Good to know, but I think most have this same question I'm about to ask.... How loud was his amp?
THANKS ALOT! i was able to get the tone i wanted with my mic ands guitar amp thanks to this video!
very helpful and simple explanations.....thanks a lot guys
Is the riff from "Revelation" by Joe Satriani? Great instructional video!
simple and quick . THANK YOU !!!!!!
thanks! i have a bunch of stickers covering up the outer ring of the cabinets but most ppl that mic their guitar always do two mics and they either do center/edge or they mic the center twice one at an angle the other straight and while that is great I simply dont have that many tracks on my digital 8 track to cover every single instrument without just buying a USB interface and using it straight to my DAW.
Do you need to plug in the microphone on the computer and on the amp? Cause the guitarist had a headphone..
Awesome explanation. To the point. Well done, Sir.
ok now i know thanks to him very simple and visually to the point Thank you
Hey there Jakiee! Thanks for the comments. Cheers from Jase.

Thanks for the feedback, and I'll try and work on my accent. Cheers!
thank you so much!!! Amazing
Can you use live microphones?
Hey guys may I ask one question :) I have this usb mic Samson c01u and I need more bass in my recordings. The thing is its a condenser mic so is it safe to place it very near to the amp? Can the loud sound damage my mic? Jacob
great tutorial. Well done!
I had to do a double-take at the start of the video and scrutinise closely for the following few seconds to be absolutely certain that this wasn't being presented by a clean-shaven Australian Vincent Cassel. Nevertheless, great video and well explained :).
I like midboost! Thank you, this was very helpful! Now I just need the mic haha
very helpful stuff thanks mate
Do you always use the mic straight or do you use off axis at times or is that better with 2 mics.
This is precious information! Thank you so much!
Cheers, this is really helpful
Amazing. Thank you.
Cheers mate. Hope it helped. Jase
Very nice!
anyone knows what song is he playing, it sounds so familiar.
thanks for the info!
where do you plug the mic into though :/
good video! :) ...btw australian accent sounds sooo funny to me :)
PERFECT, thank you!
+Javi Vera Igual. Thanks for leaving the comment. Cheers from Jason.
You could probably fix your problem with some EQing, however, you're mic is just fine being up close to an amp.
my question is, where is the mic coming from, i mean where should i plug it in?
lordwelhim esaga computer
depends
if it has 3 pins on the bottom then a standard xlr cable
sm57 is this type
doesn't need phanotm
You plug it into an audio interface, like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.
How is there no buzzing from the amp being captured? Is it the mic being used? Noisegate?
In my experience, buzz from guitar amps can be avoided in a number of ways. Humbucker pickups generally are quieter than single coil. Also often the angle with which the guitar is held can often reduce buzz. I turn off fluro lights, and I make sure that I use quality cables and connectors every step of the way.
helpful
I have a Behringer microphone (B-2 Pro) that I use to record vocals. Is it OK to use it to record an electric guitar also?
VinceHHT Sorry for the late reply (been on holidays :-)))). Yes, absolutely you can use that mic. It is a condenser mic though, so you may find that you will get more top end than you need. In that case, angle the mic slightly away from the speaker. Hope it goes well. Cheers from Jase.
jasondewilde Thanks
Javier B like this video, javiel please more videos i miss you
ok ,, many videos on this part ,, BUT , what comes next ,,do you use a mic preamp ?,,how is it connected to your interface ,,, how to get the levels right and effects ,,,mono or stereo ,,,,,this is what I'm struggling with ,, hope youll help
very very informative. thanks a shit ton
Awesome thx :))))
LOL. No problem. Cheers from Jase.
Needs more cowbell.
W
no your accent is fine
revelation by satriani :)
Satriani
did he just say to die?
+hikikomori nope, he said 'we'll see you next time'.
15 people dont know how to use mic properly
this is idiotic, just put the mic anywhere near the speaker then adjust the controls on the amp to dial in the sound. Also a Les Paul will sound fuller. Lastly tune that guitar up.... gawd help us
I don't see the need for a music bed in an instructional video. Very annoying.
this is not how to record. its how to place 1 mic on a cabinet.. Bad video because of title....
Rocky Luke That is how you fucking record. You record with a mic and that is the only main thing to make a vid about. Unless you dont know how to connect a mic to ur computer
Do you need an audio interface to plug the mic into ?
Yes
