This might well be the single best performance of any single scene in Pirates of Penzance that any theater group ever did, showcased by Tony Azito and Linda Ronstadt. The choreography and camerawork was amazing, and the way the daughters and the pirates sang counterpoint near the end sent chills down my back.
@@FredSmith-s5t I saw this in Central Park. Tony is amazing! My dad was NYPD and watched the show many times behind the scenes. He said Tony would stretch for hours and that he was very talented.
I, myself, have been performing physical comedy for almost a decade and...It blows me away. Control, flexibility, speed, timing. There's one part where he almost falls as he goes to 'kneel' down, but other than that it's a flawless performance. I heard he had hyperextension, which allowed him to spin his elbows like that!
Tony Azito dances like he is made of rubber. He was before my generation but i have not seen anyone dance with such bounce and fluidity. Great scene too
This is my favorite version of the Pirates of Penzance. I love the disconnect between the Cornish daughters and the well intentioned but cowardly Keystone-cop like constables.
I don't think they are cowardly so much as just being a bunch of guys expected to take on a gaggle of criminals armed with cannons, pistols and swords while only themselves being armed with batons...
I read about this movie in Time Magazine. They reported that Ronstadt was doubtful about singing in the high soprano range, being a more throaty and lower singer previously. She was delighted to have uncovered this new range while being coached for this time.
This was my introduction to the Pirates of Penzance, so for me this has always been PoP. Rip Tony Azito, George Rose & Angela Lansburry. You were among my many heroes.
This entire play was brilliant! I was fortunate to see the Los Angeles version, with Barry Bostwick, Pam Dawber, and Andy Gibb, back in 1980, as I recall.
I think of any musical/opera I've seen put to film this movie has the best I've ever seen and even if this was the only scene that had any I'd still rate it as high.
If you mean the Lead Policeman, I'd like to point out you used the wrong rank, he's a Sergeant, not a Captain which, in Britain, is a MILITARY rank, NOT a Police one.
While everyone in this production is extraordinarily talented, I greatly prefer this played straight as an operetta without all the goofiness. I find it far funnier that way, but that's just my opinion.
That whole body choreography of those policemen. It's enchanting

Love how he nailed it on stage so well that they had to get him for the movie

During With Cat Like Tread, Kevin Kline also almost ate it. At the end of the song, after the kicks.
HAH. Great catch

If they ever try to remake Pirates of Penzance, I can’t see anyone other than Sasha Baron Cohen in this role.
Yes, he’d be perfect based on the sole criteria that he looks like only one of the many actors to portray this role. Holmes, you astound me!
